Enhancement by pyridoxine of the action of diazepam on spinal presynaptic inhibition

Summary In spinal unanesthetized cats, pyridoxine pretreatment significantly enhanced the diazepam-induced increase in dorsal root potentials and dorsal root reflexes.Acknowledgments. Monolayer culture of adult mouse hepatic cells secreting albumin and alpha fetoprotein]

Adult mouse liver cells obtained by enzymatic dispersion were maintained in primary cultures for up to 4 weeks. They retained some of the typical morphological and ultrastructural characteristics of hepatocytes. After 2 days of culture, structures similar to bile canaliculi were found and after 6 days clusters of small proliferating cells were noticed in the gaps of the monolayer formed by large well-spread hepatocytes. Almost all 3-day cultures began to secrete alphafetoprotein for about 2 weeks, whereas albumin was secreted throughout the period of culture.     

Interaction of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) with cholinergic stimulation of glucagon secretion

Summary VIP-containing nerve fibers as well as cholinergic nerve fibers have a ubiquitous distribution in the body and both types of nerves have been demonstrated to innervate the pancreatic islets. The present study shows, in the intact, conscious mouse, that VIP and the cholinergic agonist carbachol stimulate glucagon secretion in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore VIP and carbachol were found to exert potentiating interactions on glucagon secretion. These results suggest the existence of an interactive neural regulation of glucagon secretion, exerted by acetylcholine and VIP.We thank Professor V. Relationship between glucose absorption and villus height in ageing

Summary There is a diminution of D-glucose absorption in the aged rat which is partly due to the decrease of the length of the villi.     

Effect of glucagon on ethanol oxidation in isolated rat liver cells

Summary Addition of glucagon 5 min after ethanol was found to stimulate the rate of ethanol oxidation in hepatocytes isolated from starved rats. This stimulation is of the same order of magnitude as that mediated by asparagine. The glucagon effect is suppressed by antiproteolytic agents such as insulin or NH₄Cl.
