The volcanoes that lie along the Earth's tectonic boundaries are fed by melt generated in the mantle. How this melt is extracted and focused to the volcanoes, however, remains an unresolved question. Here we present new theoretical results with implications for melt focusing beneath mid-ocean ridges. By modelling laboratory experiments, we test a formulation for magma dynamics and provide an explanation for localized bands of high-porosity and concentrated shear deformation observed in experiments. These bands emerge and persist at 15 degrees-25 degrees to the plane of shear. Past theoretical work on this system predicted the emergence of melt bands but at an angle inconsistent with experiments. Our results suggest that the observed band angle results from a balance of porosity-weakening and strain-rate-weakening deformation mechanisms. Lower band angles are predicted for greater strain-rate weakening. From these lower band angles, we estimate the orientation of melt bands beneath mid-ocean ridges and show that they may enhance magma focusing toward the ridge axis. 相似文献

This paper reflects on our experiences with researcher–practitioner partnering within an industry-funded Participatory Action
Research (PAR) project. We find that the nature of partnering in our industry-funded engagement differs from that of traditional,
non-industry funded PAR research. The distribution of power on the industry-funded academic-practitioner research team, whilst
fairly equitable at the outset of the project, shifted in favour of the practitioner partners with the progressive spillover
of credibility and knowledge from the academic to practitioner partners during the course of the engagement. Adhering to recommendations
for academic-practitioner research teams, in our experience, does not guarantee successful partnering according to PAR due
to the spillover problem. As the academic partners' power base erodes, the discretion to preserve the integrity of the PAR

This article explores the potential of integrating Participatory Learning and Action Research (PLAR) and Systems Ecology (SE) for improving research capability in facilitating sustainable development transitions in agriculture. Goal conflicts that arose in a PLAR group working on sustainability issues in small-scale organic tomato production are analysed from the perspective of SE. The possibility to improve agency for sustainable development by the merger of PLAR and SE are discussed.
