Complex fluids are usually produced by mixing together several distinct components, the interactions between which can give rise to unusual optical and rheological properties of the system as a whole. For example, the properties of microemulsions (composed of water, oil and surfactants) are determined by the microscopic structural organization of the fluid that occurs owing to phase separation of the component elements. Here we investigate the effect of introducing an additional organizing factor into such a fluid system, by replacing the oil component of a conventional water-in-oil microemulsion with an intrinsically anisotropic fluid--a nematic liquid crystal. As with the conventional case, the fluid phase-separates into an emulsion of water microdroplets (stabilized by the surfactant as inverse micelles) dispersed in the 'oil' phase. But the properties are further influenced by a significant directional coupling between the liquid-crystal molecules and the surfactant tails that emerge (essentially radially) from the micelles. The result is a modified bulk-liquid crystal that is an ordered nematic at the mesoscopic level, but which does not exhibit the strong light scattering generally associated with bulk nematic order: the bulk material here is essentially isotropic and thus transparent. 相似文献

Early reports that acyclic analogues of oxytocin and vasopressin (AVP) have drastically reduced agonistic activities established as dogma that an intact hexapeptide ring structure is essential for the pharmacological activities of analogues of neurohypophysial hormones. Thus, virtually all the many hundreds of agonistic and antagonistic analogues of the neurohypophysial peptides that have been reported contain an intact ring. Here we report that an intact ring is not essential for binding of antagonistic AVP analogues to vasopressor (V1) or antidiuretic (V2) AVP receptors. In fact, one acyclic AVP analogue seems to be about as potent as any previously reported cyclic V2 antagonist. This finding suggests new possibilities for the design of AVP analogues as pharmacological probes and for therapeutic use. Similar modifications might be useful in the design of analogues of other cyclic peptides, such as calcitonin, somatostatin and the atrial natriuretic factors. 相似文献

Africa's abundant large herbivores are very heterogeneously distributed, both geographically and regionally. Within a region, some localities contain dense animal concentrations although areas nearby may be virtually unoccupied. Mixed-species herds are a conspicuous feature of areas where animals concentrate. The prevailing explanations of local distributional concentrations are (1) that different herbivore species facilitate each other's foraging, and (2) that animals are protected from predation by both intraspecific and interspecific association. If facilitation of grazing were an overriding factor, mixed species herds should move extensively with localized rain showers to obtain the greatest forage yield. If predation were the major factor influencing animal densities and distributions, rapid, unpredictable spatial movements would further reduce predation. But because resident, non-migratory species tend to occupy home ranges that are stable over time, neither of these hypotheses is totally compelling. Because tropical forages are of lower quality than temperate ones and are often chronically deficient in mineral elements, I tested the hypothesis that areas where animals concentrate are localities supporting forages of higher mineral content. I report here that the mineral content of foods is an important determinant of the spatial distributions of animals within the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. A remarkable feature of nerve cells is the complex and variable pattern of their axonal and dendritic branches. Quantitative studies of a simple part of the nervous system in mammals provide evidence that neuronal geometry and innervation are regulated by long-term trophic interactions between neurons and their targets. The single-headed myosins called myosin-I were first isolated from the protozoan Acanthamoeba and subsequently identified in other cells. We previously reported evidence that myosin-I is responsible for the movement of membranes, extracted from Acanthamoeba, along actin filaments in vitro. Here we show for the first time that myosin-I can bind directly to NaOH-extracted membranes isolated from Acanthamoeba and to vesicles of pure lipids with an affinity sufficient for extensive binding in the cell. Membrane-bound myosin-I may provide a mechanism for many cellular movements previously thought to involve filamentous myosin-II. 相似文献

Improvements in the activity, selectivity and scope of these catalysts could drastically reduce the environmental impact, and increase the sustainability, of chemical reactions.
