A Study of the Effect of Functional Subcultures on the Performance of Hong Kong Construction Companies

As some theorists regard organizational culture as ambiguities, this study attempts to prove that ambiguities are actually the resultant overview of interacting and dissimilar functional subcultures. Therefore, study of the effect of culture on performance should focus on the subculture system instead of the illusive and probably non-existing unitary corporate culture. To this end, a consensual structural framework that effectively demarcates the boundaries of subcultures is needed. By using the Viable System Model as a structural framework for the demarcation of functional subcultures, a questionnaire survey on construction professionals in Hong Kong was conducted. Statistical analysis results indicate that corporate culture could be better understood as a system of functional subcultures that correspond to the five functions of the viable system model. It is further noted that the strength of some functional subculture variables associates differently and significantly with organizational performance.

Conversion of psoralen DNA monoadducts in E. coli to interstrand DNA cross links by near UV light (320–360 nm): Inability of angelicin to form cross links,in vivo

Summary Both angelicin and psoralen monoadducts formed in vivo in E. coli by near UV light produce lethal and mutagenic effects. However psoralen monoadducts are converted to cross links by higher doses of UV; angelicin monoadducts are not. The relevance of these results to psoralen photosensitization is discussed.Supported by the National Research Council of Canada.     

Statistical tests on two characteristics of the shapes of cluster diagrams

A cluster diagram is a rooted planar tree that depicts the hierarchical agglomeration of objects into groups of increasing size. On the null hypothesis that at each stage of the clustering procedure all possible joins are equally probable, we derive the probability distributions for two properties of these diagrams: (1)S, the number of single objects previously ungrouped that are joined in the final stages of clustering, and (2)m _k, the number of groups ofk+1 objects that are formed during the process. Ecological applications of statistical tests for these properties are described and illustrated with data from weed communities of Saskatchewan fields.This work was supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
