Parasite fauna of the grey mullet Mugil cephalus L. 1758, and its relationship with some ecological factors in Lower Kızılırmak Delta located by the Black Sea,Turkey

Parasites of the grey mullet Mugil cephalus collected from Lower K?z?l?rmak Delta in Turkey were investigated. Trichodina puytoraci, Trichodina lepsii, Ligophorus mediterraneus, Ligophorus cephali, Gyrodactylus sp., Microcotyle mugilis, Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa, Haplosplanchnus pachysomus, Diplostomum spathaceum, Tylodelphys clavata, Posthodiplostomum sp., Neoechinorhyncus agilis and Ergasilus lizae were identified. Overall infection prevalence (%), mean intensity and mean abundance values were 99.61%, 458.10 ± 75.72 and 456.30 ± 75.44, respectively. Infection indices of parasite species in relation to season, lakes/lagoons and some physicochemical parameters of water such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and nitrate are determined and discussed. Posthodiplostomum sp. is a new parasite record for mugilids and Diplostomum spathaceum is the first record in M. cephalus, in the present study. Moreover, Ligophorus mediterraneus, Ligophorus cephali and Ergasilus lizae are new records for Turkish parasite fauna of fish and Mugil cephalus is a new host record for Neoechinorhyncus agilis in Turkey.     

The effects of low concentrations of actinomycin D upon nucleic acid synthesis in different cell types

Résumé L'effet des concentrations faibles de l'actionmycine D sur le pourcentage de cellules dans la phase S pendant un contact de longue durée a été étudié dans 4 souches de cellules. Les résultats montrent que le blocage qui a lieu à la fin de G₁ n'est que temporaire pour les cellules L-strain, mais qu'il dure plus longtemps pour HEp/2, les fibroblasts de la souris et les cellules du rein du singe.

Summary Effects of ether, nembutal or urethane anaesthesia on gastric secretion and mucosal blood flow (MBF) are studied in the Rat; these 3 anaesthetics alter neither volume nor total acidity of juice, but free acidity and proteolytic activity are more importance after ether anaesthesia; MBF is highest in nembutal anaesthetized rats; therefore nembutal is the best anaesthetic for studies of digestive physiology or pharmacology.     

Expectations,use and judgmental adjustment of external financial and economic forecasts: an empirical investigation

A survey of 124 users of externally produced financial and economic forecasts in Turkey investigated their expectations and perceptions of forecast quality and their reasons for judgmentally adjusting forecasts. Expectations and quality perceptions mainly related to the timeliness of forecasts, the provision of a clear justifiable rationale and accuracy. Cost was less important. Forecasts were frequently adjusted when they lacked a justifiable explanation, when the user felt they could integrate their knowledge into the forecast, or where the user perceived a need to take responsibility for the forecast. Forecasts were less frequently adjusted when they came from a well‐known source and were based on sound explanations and assumptions. The presence of feedback on accuracy reduced the influence of these factors. The seniority and experience of users had little effect on their attitudes or propensity to make adjustments. Diagnosis of diabetes mellitus using artificial neural network and classification and regression tree optimized with genetic algorithm

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most important public health problems affecting millions of people worldwide. An early and accurate diagnosis of diabetes mellitus has critical importance for the medical treatments of patients. In this study, first, artificial neural network (ANN) and classification and regression tree (CART)-based approaches are proposed for the diagnosis of diabetes. Hybrid ANN-GA and CART-GA approaches are then developed using a genetic algorithm (GA) to improve the classification accuracy of these approaches. Finally, the performances of the developed approaches are evaluated with a Pima Indian diabetes data set. Experimental results show that the developed hybrid CART-GA approach outperforms the ANN, CART, and ANN-GA approaches in terms of classification accuracy, and this approach provides an efficient methodology for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.

Enrichment of ligands with molecular dockings and subsequent characterization for human alcohol dehydrogenase 3

Alcohol dehydrogenase 3 (ADH3) has been assigned a role in nitric oxide homeostasis due to its function as an S-nitrosoglutathione reductase. As altered S-nitrosoglutathione levels are often associated with disease, compounds that modulate ADH3 activity might be of therapeutic interest. We performed a virtual screening with molecular dockings of more than 40,000 compounds into the active site of human ADH3. A novel knowledge-based scoring method was used to rank compounds, and several compounds that were not known to interact with ADH3 were tested in vitro. Two of these showed substrate activity (9-decen-1-ol and dodecyltetraglycol), where calculated binding scoring energies correlated well with the logarithm of the k _cat/K _m values for the substrates. Two compounds showed inhibition capacity (deoxycholic acid and doxorubicin), and with these data three different lines for specific inhibitors for ADH3 are suggested: fatty acids, glutathione analogs, and cholic acids.
