On the antitumour activity of some poducts of wood-decaying fungi

Zusammenfassung Die Versuchsergebnisse über die antitumoröse Aktivität einiger holzzerstörender Pilze (Lösung des roten Pigmentes nachSchánl ⁴) wurde beschrieben. Das Überleben von Mäusen mit implantiertem Ehrlich'schem Karzinom ist statistisch in der Gruppe der behandelten Tiere in 5% gesichert. Histologisch ist es bei länger behandelten und überlebenden Tieren zum Verschwinden des karzinomatösen Charakters gekommen, und an seiner Stelle bildete sich ein pleiomorföses Sarkom.

Summary With the BrdU technique here described, Giemsa stained metaphases with either early or late, replicational patterns can be obtained within 1 day after cell harvesting, showing a better resolution than³H-thymidine autoradiography.     

Volatile metabolites of aspergilli in relation to spore germination of some keratinophilic fungi

Summary The effect of volatile metabolites produced by 8 Aspergilli (i.e.,Aspergillus candidus, A. chevalieri, A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. nidulans, A. niger, A. ochraceous andA. tamarii) on spore germination were tested againstAuxarthron conjugatum, Chrysosporium pannicola, Keratinomyces ajelloi andMicrosporum gypseum. The volatile metabolites inhibited the spore germination of all the test fungi.Acknowledgment. The authors thank Professor G.P. A survey of some cariogenic streptococci for hyaluronidase activity

Zusammenfassung Dreizehn StämmeStreptococcusmutans und 5 kariogene Streptokokken-Stämme wurden auf ihre Hyaluronidase-Aktivität untersucht. Alle 18 Stämme zeigten negative Hyaluronidase-Aktivität. Acht weitere Stämme vonStreptococcus mutans wurden zusätzlich von kariösem Dentin isoliert und untersucht Auch hier könnte keine Hyaluronidase-Aktivität nachgewiesen werden. Hyaluronidase-Aktivität konnte nicht induziert werden und es wurde gefolgert, dassStreptococcus mutans und andere kariogene Streptokokken keine Hyaluronidase erzeugen.

Skin-photosensitizing activity of some methylpsoralens

Riassunto Alcuni metil-derivati del psoralene hanno una attività fotosensibilizzatrice cutanea notevolmente più forte dello stesso psoralene, considerato finora la più attiva sostanza di questo gruppo. Il derivato, finora trovato con maggiore potere fotosensibilizzante è l'8-metilpsoralene.

Riassunto È stata determinata la fotoreattività con DNA nativo di un gruppo di furocumarine per irradiazione a 365 nm. I valori ottenuti sono risultati in accordo con quelli di attività fotosensibilizzatrice cutanea posseduti dalle stesse sostanze.     

The antimicrobial activity of some insect extracts possessing juvenile hormone activity

Zusammenfassung Extraktstoffe vonH. cecropia, S. cynthia undR. orizaba zeigten antibakterielle Wirkung gegenüber mehreren Mikroorganismen. Ein schwächerer Effekt wurde auch mit den Extraktstoffen vonGalleria mellonella, adulten Männchen vonCynthia- und vonCecropia-Puppen beobachtet. Die antimikrobielle Aktivität wurde mit dem Fettsäureanteil der Extraktstoffe in Beziehung gesetzt und von der Wirkung des Juvenilhormons abgegrenzt.

Summary Evaluation of the hypotensive activity of dihydroxy coumarins and their congeners reveal that the naturally occurring dimethoxy coumarin Scoparone has maximal activity, more significant than L--methyl dopa. Structure activity relationship studies are reported with an attempt to offer a probable mechanism of action.

Potentiation of antifungal activity of sesquiterpene dialdehydes againstCandida albicans and two other fungi

The antifungal activity of two drimane sesquiterpene dialdehydes, polygodial (1) and warburganal (2), alone and in combination with several other substances, was examined against three fungi,Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae andPityrosporum ovale employing a broth dilution method. Anethole significantly synergized the activity of the two sesquiterpenoids againstC. albicans andS. cerevisiae however, it had only an, additive effect againstP. ovale. By contrast, two antioxidants, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), noticeably enhanced the activity of the sesquiterpenoids againstP. ovale, but had no, effect againstC. albicans andS. cerevisiae.
