The identification of ecdysterone (20-hydroxyecdysone) in 3 species of molluscs (Gastropoda: Pulmonata)

Summary Ecdysterone has been identified in the schistosomiasis vectorBiomphalaria glabrata Say and inHelix aspersa Müller as well as inLymmaea stagnalis L. by chromatography, bioassay, radioimmunoassay, derivatization and by mass spectroscopy. Analysis of the food, faeces and hepatopancreas suggest that the sterol is derived from the diet. The probable function of ecdysterone in relation to calcification of the shell is discussed in this paper.We wish to thank Professor P. Karlson and Dr J. Cocarcinogens of the diterpene ester type fromCroton flavens L. and esophageal cancer in Curaçao

Summary From the roots ofCroton flavens L., 3 highly irritant and tumor promoting Croton factorsF ₁–F ₃ and the corresponding 3 cryptic Croton factorsF₁–F₃ were isolated and characterized as novel esters of 16-hydroxy- and 4-deoxy-16-hydroxyphorbol, respectively. These findings suggest that tumor promoters of the phorbol ester type, ingested through the widespread and frequent use ofCroton flavens according to local habits, may be causally related to the well recognized high rate of esophageal cancer on Curaçao.Dedicated to Prof. Dr H. The isolation and structure of 13,18-dehydroglaucarubinone,a new antineoplastic quassinoid fromSimarouba amara

Summary An investigation of the Guyana plantSimarouba amara Aubl. (Simaroubaceae) for antineoplastic quassinoids led to isolation and structural determination of the new quassinoids 2-acetylglaucarubine (1a) and 13,18-dehydroglaucarubinone (2). The previously known 2-acetylglaucarubinone (3a) and glaucarubinone (3b) were also obtained. Identification of a new predaceous stink bug pheromone and its attractiveness to the eastern yellowjacket

Summary Males ofPodisus fretus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) release a long-range attractant pheromone containing linalool (49.0%), (E)-2-hexenal (34.5%), benzyl alcohol (12.0%), nerolidol (2.0%),-terpineol (1.1%), and traces of several other compounds. The eastern yellowjacket,Vespula maculifrons (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), is attracted to artificial pheromones forP. fretus and for the sympatric species,Podisus maculiventris.The authors thank Mr T.J. Wound healing properties of naphthaquinone pigments fromAlkanna tinctoria

Summary From the roots ofAlkanna tinctoria Tausch, the alkannin esters of the following acids were isolated and identified: ,-dimethylacrylic acid, -acetoxy-isovaleric acid, isovaleric acid, and angelic acid. These esteric pigments showed excellent wound healing properties in a clinical study on 72 patients with ulcus cruris.I thank Dr A. Winkler, Heidberg Hospital and Prof. K. Mutagenicity testing of 3 hallucinogens: LSD,psilocybin and‡ 9-THC using the micronucleus test

Summary Using the micronucleus test as a screening method for mutagenic activity, no significant increase in the number of micronuclei was found when LSD, psilocybin or ⁹-THC were administered in 3 logarithmically increasing doses to mice. Azathioprine (Imuran^®), given as a positive control, caused a statistically significant increase in micronucleated cells.Acknowledgment. AnAnolis skin melanophore assay suitable for photoaffinity labeling studies with α-MSH

Summary Visual determination of MSH-induced pigment migration in melanophores of small pieces ofAnolis carolinensis skin is standardized by first measuring photoelectrometrically the change in reflection/transmission of the whole dorsal skin in response to different hormone concentrations. This method allows the rapid and precise recording of time-response curves after photoaffinity labeling of MSH receptors or of dose-response curves of large series of synthetic compounds.Acknowledgments. Revised structures for iselin and iliensin and the identity of the former with archangelin

Summary Structures of iselin and iliensin have been revised. The structure (Ib) is secured for iselin by a direct comparison (m.p., UV, IR, PMR) with archangelin. The synthesis of iliensin (IIb) has been effected through the condensation of xanthotoxol (II, R=OH) and -cyclolavandulyl bromide (III).
