Summary In the phase microscope it can be seen that cloudy swelling is the consequence of an enlargement of the mitochondria, whereby the membrane of the mitochondria is detached from the body of the mitochondrion. An increased water intake seems to be the reason of this phenomenon.The intraperitoneal injection of hen egg albumen is followed after several hours by an accumulation of hyaline droplets in the protoplasma of the renal tubule cells. The PM reveals that this foreign protein is stored within the mitochondria, which are converted into brilliant granules. The same is true for the accumulation of vital dyes in kidney tubule cells, but in this case there is a combination of the dye with protein deriving from a slight lesion of the cells.

Summary Reduction of the ketal II of 7-keto-1,4-dimethoxy-4b-methyl-5, 6, 7, 9, 10-hexahydrophenanthrene with lithium in liquid ammonia furnishes a corresponding dihydro derivative, from which a tricyclic triketone, m.p. 121°, is obtained upon acid hydrolysis. This triketone is identical with the recently described antitrans-4b-methyl-1, 2, 3, 4, 4a, 4b, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 10-dodecahydro-phenanthrene-1, 4, 7-trione III and thus conforms to the stereochemistry of the natural steroids.

Summary (1) Tissue slices of the liver and pieces of the skin of summer-frogs were incubated at 47.5°C for 30–150 min. Their respiration was measured during this incubation period and thereafter at a temperature of 37.5°C.(2) As a sign of an irreversible inactivation of the enzymes, the average respiration was inhibited. However, after certain periods of incubation at 47.5°C, over-shoot phenomena in the O₂-uptake at the temperature of 37.5°C were seen.

Summary The historical development of the morphological approach is reviewed. The first attempts to use a functional-dynamic mode of attack were made byVirchow. The modern methods of morphology, such as autoradiography and morphometry, have shown more and more clearly that cells are governed by complex principles of organization which are closely connected with one another. It is principally catabolic and anabolic systems of function which ensure this organization. The fact that they are dynamic cell processes is also seen in the ultra-structural pathology, since, in response to injury, cells immediately show catabolic and also anabolic reactions. Thus the different influences upon the cell can probably be traced to simple basic phenomena.

Summary Experiments on influencing cotyledon formation in embryos ofEranthis hiemalis are reported. By treating the seeds with 100–2000 ppm solutions of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, -naphthylacetic acid and even isopropyl N-phenyl carbamate one can obtain significant increases in twinning and in cotyledon anomalies (syncotyly and pleiocotyly of all degrees). Embryos can be successfully treated until approximately 2 weeks after initial opening of the follicles. X-radiations achieve the same effect, with doses of 2000–4000r corresponding to the treatments with 1000–2000 ppm 2,4-D-solutions. By using weaker concentrations and with sudden temperature changes one can likewise raise the percentage of syn-, tri- and tetracotyls, but pleiocotyls of the higher degrees (5 and more cotyledons) appear only when more intensive methods of treatment are employed. These forms which exceed the normal range of variability arise as bud-like embryo regenerates on the as yet undifferentiated original embryo.

Summary An instrument for the automated and timevariable supply of mitostatica to leucocyte cultures for chromosome preparations is described. This instrument allows a routine laboratory to prepare cultures with a better time schedule. The action of colcemid was successfully tested after a 24-h period in the incubator before adding to the culture.
