Production of antibodies against synthetic angiotensin II in various animal species

Zusammenfassung Bei Ratten und Kaninchen, jedoch nicht bei Hunden und Katzen, konnten durch wiederholte Injektion von Angiotensin-II-Amid-Carbodiimid-Proteinkomplex in Freund'schem Adjuvans zirkulierende Antikörper gegen Angiotensin erzeugt werden. Durch diese Immunisierung wurde die pressorische Wirkung von exogenem Angiotensin aufgehoben bzw. abgeschwächt, während die von Noradrenalin oder Vasopressin unbeeinflusst blieb. Der Reningehalt der Nieren von Ratten und Kaninchen wurde durch die Immunisierung nicht verändert.     

Deformation of transforming red cells in various pH solutions

Summary Centrifugation into a rapid cell fixative is used to determine the conformation of red cells at various pH-values as a measure of red cell deformability. Discocytes show a good deformation into handbag-like forms; echinocytes and stomatocytes have reduced deformability with characteristic shapes of deformation.     

The antimitotic drug 4,6-dimethyl-2-amino-3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl-pyrimidine inhibits the nucleoside transport system of cells from various animal species

4,6-dimethyl-2-amino-3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl-pyrimidine (B-31) is a pyrimidine derivative previously reported to arrest the mitotic cycle of mammalian cells in metaphase. In the present study it is shown that B-31 also acts as a specific inhibitor of the cellular uptake of nucleosides. The uptake of purinic and pyrimidinic nucleosides is inhibited by 80–90% at concentrations in the range 5–20 μg/ml, whereas those of nucleobases, leucine, choline and glucose are unaltered at the maximum nontoxic dose of B-31 (25 μg/ml). Various mammalian (human, monkey and murine) and avian cell are equally sensitive to the inhibition of nucleoside transport. The antimitotic effect of B-31, by contrast, is species-specific: human cells are the most sensitive whereas monkey and chicken fibroblasts appear resistant to this effect. Both effects can be reversed by removal of B-31 from the medium; inhibition of nucleoside transport can also be reversed by high doses of the nucleosides themselves.     

Physiological dissection of various effects of ruthenium red dye on Paramecium cells.

Polycationic dye ruthenium red, but not alcian blue, if externally applied to Paramecium cells quickly inhibits their phagocytosis. Ruthenium red combined with the cell surface diminishes frequency and duration of ciliary reversals and gradually inactivates the Ca++ gating mechanism. This effect persists for 1-3 after ruthenium red removal from the culture medium.     

Binding of ringhals venom direct hemolytic factor to erythrocytes and osmotic ghosts of various animal species

Résumé Le taux du facteur lytique (DLF) provenant du venin du serpent Ringhals, lié aux érythrocytes de différentes espèces animales, correspond à leur sensibilité à l'action du venin. Cette correspondence n'est plus valable pour les membranes érythrocytaires obtenues par hémolyse osmotique. La capacité de ces membranes de lier DLF est supérieure à celle des érythrocytes intacts. La cinétique de liaison du DLF aux membranes est différente de celle aux érythrocytes intacts.     

Hormonal influences on erythrocyte catechol-O-methyl transferase activity in humans

Résumé Dans le cas de beaucoup de femmes prenant des contraceptifs oraux, l'activité du transférase catéchole-O-méthyle du globule rouge est réduite à des nivaux analogues à ceux observes dans le cas de femmes souffrant de dépression non-traitée. Le dépôt de contraceptifs à action durable n'affecte pas d'une manière significative l'enzyme, bien qu'elle soit réduite pendant le troisième trimestre de la grossesse.     

Carcinogenesis in different animal species by diethylnitrosamine

Zusammenfassung Die hepato-cancerogene Wirkung von Diäthylnitrosamin konnte an 11 verschiedenen Tierarten in chronisch-toxikologischen Untersuchungen nachgewiesen werden. Die zur Krebserzeugung benötigten Gesamtdosen liegen bei allen Tierarten in der gleichen Grössenordnung. Auch beim Menschen ist eine leberkrebserzeugende Wirkung von Diäthylnitrosamin sehr wahrscheinlich.     

Night pineal N-acetyltransferase activity in rats exposed to white or red light pulses of various intensity and duration

Summary Night N-acetyltransferase activity is suppressed by red and white light; the red light intensity, however, must be 10 times higher. Antihypertensive effect of purified enzyme showing angiotensinase activity from rabbit red cells in rats

Zusammenfassung In der akuten Phase der Goldblatt-Hypertonie der Ratte verhinderte die Injektion von reiner Angiotensinase ein Aussteigen des Blutdruckes. Die Behandlung war unwirksam bei chronischem Hochdruck.     

Cellular distribution of catalase activity in red cells of homozygous and heterozygous cases of acatalasia

Zusammenfassung Es wird ein Verfahren beschrieben, welches im Blutausstrich katalasehaltige und katalasefreie Erythrocyten zu unterscheiden erlaubt. Dieses beruht auf der sehr ungleichen Methämoglobinbildung bei Inkubierung der Zellen mit Glucose und Glucoseoxidase. Es wird nachgewiesen, dass im Blut homozygoter Defektträger 0,5-1% aller Erythrocyten einen anscheinend normalen Katalasegehalt aufweisen. Im Blut heterozygoter Defektträger konnten keine Anhaltspunkte für das Bestehen zweier Zellpopulationen von verschiedener Katalaseaktivität gefunden werden.     

Influence of blood sugar level on the glycolytic activity of human red cells

Riassunto Studiando la glicolisi di globuli rossi umani è stata notata una correlazione statisticamente significativa tra livello iniziale di glucosio e glicolisi, espressa in mg di glucosio utilizzati da 100 ml di globuli rossi per ora. In condizioni di carico sperimentale con glucosio la correlazione ha avuto un comportamento variabile.
