Cryptobiotic crusts make up an important part of the ground cover in arid systems. Along with their roles of retarding soil erosion and enhancing soil fertility, crusts may also be supporting local and regional arthropod biodiversity. We inventoried arthropod species in mossy, lichen, and mixed (lichen and mossy) cryptobiotic crusts at 2 sites in central New Mexico pi?on-juniper habitat. We collected 240 crust samples and used a heptane flotation technique to extract the microarthropods. We found 39 species of microarthropods and small macroarthropods, with significantly fewer species on lichen. Species richness was higher in March than in August, but diversity was lower because of dominance by the mite Neonanorchestes sp. Mean area differed significantly for different crust types, but arthropod species richness did not follow the pattern of more species on crusts with larger area. Arthropod species may be influencing such processes as nutrient cycling; therefore, the crust/arthropod interaction may be critical to aridland health.  相似文献

Fruit production of chiropterochorous plants was studied to test the hypotheses that more complex habitats will harbour: (1) greater plant diversity, (2) higher biomass and density of bat‐dispersed plants, and (3) elevated frugivorous bat abundance. We defined habitat complexity as vegetation structural complexity – the degree of structural arrangement of vegetation. As forested environments are more complex than modified environments, they should harbour more bat‐dispersed species. From 2002 to 2003 in southern Mexico, we observed two fruiting peaks of 56 plant species (20 of which were bat‐dispersed) in tropical subhumid forest, tropical semi‐deciduous forest and modified open areas. Fruit density was greater in the canopy than in the understorey. Phenology alternated across seasons and habitats. Habitat complexity demonstrated no association with bat abundance, fruit mass or fruit density. A positive relationship between fruit mass and frugivorous bat abundance suggests that fruit mass probably influences frugivorous bat movement across time and space.  相似文献

From Martín García Island were collected 975 jumping spiders, from five environments, using beating net and manual sampling methods. Saitis variegatus Mello-Leitão, 1941 was the most abundant (24.62%). The sandy xerophilous forest had the highest species richness (23 morphospecies) and jungle showed the greatest spider abundance (n: 384). The sandy area was the least diverse and the last in relative abundance. Salticids represented 16% of the species recorded from Argentina, and the second largest family registered. The spider fauna found could be similar to that of the Southern Brasilian region, as occurs with scorpions. Two genera and two species are new records for Argentina. In addition, three new species of jumping spiders, as well as the discovery of the unknown male and female of two species, were registered. There was no record of cosmopolitan spiders or those with a large distribution range on the Island.  相似文献
