An illustration is provided. The species is named in honor of the late Seville Flowers, professor of botany at the University of Utah.       

A new species of Frasera (Gentianaceae) from Uinta Basin, Utah

Frasera ackermanae, sp. nov. is described based on specimens collected from the Brush Creek drainage, Uinta Basin in Uintah County, Utah. The short stem, compact inflorescence, and longer calyx lobes separate this species from the similar Frasera pahutensis Reveal.     

An undescribed species of Thelypodiopsis (Brassicaceae) from the Uinta Basin, Utah

Thelypodiopsis argillacea Welsh and Atwood sp. nov. is described from specimens collected on the Green River Shale Formation in Uintah County, Utah.     

A new combination in Penstemon (Scrophulariaceae)

Field and herbarium studies of Penstemon cyananthus Hook. ssp. longiflorus Pennell suggest that this taxon be elevated to species rank.       

New taxa and nomenclatural changes in Utah Penstemon (Scrophulariaceae)

New taxa include Penstemon angustifolius Pursh var. dulcis Neese, P. leonardii Rydb. var. higginsii Neese, P. scariosus Pennel var. cyanomontanus Neese, and P. thompsoniae (Gray) Rydb. var. desperatus Neese. New nomenclatural combinations include: Penstemon acaulis L. O. Williams var. yampaensis (Penl.) Neese, P. duchesnensis (N. Holmgren) Neese, P. leonardii Rydb. var. patricus (N. Holmgren) Neese, and P. pachyphyllus Gray ex Rydb. var. mucronatus (N. Holmgren) Neese.     

Mimulus evanescens (Scrophulariaceae): a new annual species from the northern Great Basin

Recent taxonomic studies in Mimulus support the recognition of Mimulus evanescens , a new autogamous species morphologically allied with M. breviflorus and M. latidens . Initially known only from herbarium specimens, the most recent from 1958, M. evanescens was relocated in the field in 1990 in northern Lassen Co., CA. A second population was found in southern Lake Co., OR, in 1993. Mimulus evanescens is apparently confined to the Great Basin and its periphery, where it has been recorded from 10 localities across Idaho, Oregon, and California. Based on collection information and visits to the two extant populations, the new species appears to be restricted to vernally moist sites and fluctuating banks of intermittent streams or pools. Long-term utilization of such sites by livestock may have contributed to the present-day rarity of M. evanescens . The species should be added to federal and state lists of candidate endangered species pending the results of future field studies and surveys.     

A new status for Penstemon cyananthus Hook. ssp. subglaber Pennell (Scrophulariaceae)

Penstemon cyanathus Hook. ssp. subglaber Pennell, a plant found frequently in northwestern Utah, southeastern Idaho, and southeastern Wyoming, is elevated to species status. A new name, Penstemon holmgrenii Clark is proposed because P. subglaber is preoccupied.     

A new perennial species of Gilia (Polemoniaceae) from Utah

Gilia tenuis Smith & Neese is a previously undescribed species from Emery and Sevier counties, Utah, apparently closely related to G. caespitosa Gray and G. subnuda Torr. ex Gray. It is distinguished from these species by its possession of a combination of characters including perennial, multicipital habit, lobed basal leaves, and small, pale blue flowers.     

Spring waterfowl migration in the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah

Peak numbers occurred during the first week in April 1975 when 11,440 birds were counted. In 1976 the highest count, 9,650 birds, was made on 15 March. Most numerous earlyseason migrants were Mallards and Pintails. Important midseason migrants included Blue - winged and Cinnamon Teal, Canvasbacks, and Redheads. Late season migrants were Gadwall and Ruddy Ducks. Surveys conducted only at Ouray Refuge or at Pelican Lake would not adequately have reflected species composition of spring migration. Results point up the advisability of sampling large open water areas to obtain a representative view of waterfowl species composition in a given area during spring migration.        

A new species of Hydropsyche (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae) from Utah

Hydropsyche quitchupaha, n. sp. , is described and illustrated based on 3 males collected in Sevier, Emery, and Kane counties, Utah. The upturned posteromesal lobes of tergum X, subapically swollen phallobase, and dorsally depressed phallus apex separate this species from all other members of the Hydropsyche scalaris Group.     

A new pulvinate Eriogonum (Polygonaceae) from Utah

A new species of pulvinate wild buckwheat, Eriogonum soredium (Polygonaceae, Eriogonoideae) is described from near-barren limestone slopes in the Grampian Hill area near Frisco, Beaver County, Utah. The new species is outwardly similar to E. shockleyi S. Wats, but may be readily distinguished by its glabrous (not pubescent) flowers and fruits, generally smaller leaves, more numerous involucres per head, turbinate (not campanulate) involucres with 5, rarely 4 (not 5 to 10) teeth, and the smaller flowers.     

Raptors of the Uinta National Forest, Utah

The past and present use of the Uinta National Forest by birds of prey was determined from historical records and surveys conducted during 1973, 1974, and 1975. Data describing the history, present status, and physical characteristics of each nest site were collected, along with the type and intensivity of human activity within a half - mile radius of the nest. In addition, limited data on fall migration of raptors along the Wasatch Front and the food habits of Golden Eagles are presented. Management guidelines, based on the results of this study, are proposed.     

Temperature-mediated changes in seed dormancy and light requirement for Penstemon palmeri (Scrophulariaceae)

Penstemon palmeri is a short-lived perennial herb colonizing disturbed sites in semiarid habitats in the western USA. In this study seed was harvested from six native and four seeded populations during two consecutive years. In laboratory germination trials at constant 15 C, considerable between-lot variation in primary dormancy and light requirement was observed. Four weeks of moist chilling (1 C) induced secondary dormancy at 15 C. Cold-induced secondary dormancy was reversed by one week of dark incubation at 30 C. This warm incubation treatment also reduced the light requirement of unchilled, after-ripened seed. Fluctuations in dormancy and light requirement of buried seeds have been linked to seasonal changes in soil temperature. Penstemon palmeri germination responses to temperature appear to be similar to those of facultative winter annuals.

The new species is compared to its most similar North American congeners.          

Haplopappus crispus and H. zionis (Asteradeae): new species from Utah

Two groups of glabrous, narrow-leaved Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Asteraceae) are perceived, and appropriate taxonomic combinations are made, i.e., C. v. ssp. viscidiflorus var. stenophyllus and C. v. ssp. axillaris. The two are fairly distinct geographically, and they can be separated by floral morphology. A key to all species of section Chrysothamnus (to which C. viscidiflorus belongs) is given.     

New species of Talinum (Portulaceae) from Utah

New species of Mentzelia and Phacelia are described from northwestern New Mexico, USA, as Mentzelia todiltoensis , N. Duane Atwood & Stanley L. Welsh, and Phacelia sivinskii N. D. Atwood, sp. nov. The new Mentzelia is compared to M. humilis based on similarities in seed, fruit, leaf, and flower morphology and to M. memorabalis in stem, leaf, and fruit morphology. Phacelia sivinskii is compared to P. constancei N. D. Atwood on the basis of seed, leaf, and flower morphology.     

New species of Primula (Primulaceae) from Utah

Named as a new species from the House Range of Millard County, Utah, as Primula domensis Kass & Welsh.     

Breeding biology of Mountain Plovers ( Charadrius montanus ) in the Uinta Basin

The known Mountain Plover population breeding on the Myton Bench, Duchesne County, Utah, is small, composed roughly of 30 adults and young after each breeding season. Currently, its location is peripheral to the species main range. This shrub-steppe breeding habitat differs from the shortgrass prairie habitat with which this bird is historically associated. Between 1996 and 1998 we made observations at nesting sites located consistently in 2 concentrated areas surrounded by large tracts of similar habitat. Activity may be focused in these specific areas because of breeding-site fidelity; this behavior is common among most shorebirds and has been documented for the Mountain Plover in Colorado. Also, Mountain Plovers are social and tend to choose nest sites near others. Most nests in Utah were located within close proximity of mounds of white-tailed prairie dogs ( Cynomys leucurus ), and all were situated near roadways or oil well pads. Mountain Plovers were often observed with broods on these bare areas at night. We conclude that Mountain Plovers on the Myton Bench are distributed in clumped breeding colonies within large areas of apparently favorable habitat.
