Cheatgrass ( Bromus tectorum L.) is a dominant weed that has increased the frequency of wildfire in the Great Basin since its introduction about 100 yr ago. This study examines characteristics of respiratory metabolism in several different populations. Seeds from 6 populations were germinated and metabolic heat rates (q) and dark respiration rates (R co2 ) of all seedlings were measured calorimetrically at 15° and 25° C or (for 3 populations) at 5° intervals from 5° to 35° C. Growth rates, substrate carbon conversion efficiencies, and Arrhenius temperature coefficients were calculated from the data. Results show that cheatgrass metabolism is most efficient at temperatures near 0° C; at temperatures above 20-25° C, efficiency goes to zero. Cheatgrass populations differ in their temperature dependencies of substrate carbon conversion efficiency and predicted growth rate. Measurements of respiratory heat and CO 2 rates as functions of temperature can be made relatively quickly and used to aid understanding of metabolic adaptation by invasive and native species to the environment.  相似文献

We seeded Agropyron cristatum and 16 native Great Basin perennial species on Bromus tectorum -dominated sites to compare temporal patterns of seedling emergence and early survival among species. To indicate variability between sites and between years, plots were planted on 2 sites in western Utah in autumn 1994, and plantings were repeated near 1 site in autumn 1995. Two sites included burned and unburned seedbed treatments. We monitored seedling emergence and survival from early winter until July of the 1st year. Four seasonal patterns of emergence were evident, indicating considerable potential for different seasonal patterns of precipitation to favor recruitment of difference species. Emergence of all shrubs, except Ephedra nevadensis , began in February and essentially ended by April. Seedlings of Ephedra nevadensis and of the grasses Agropyron and Pseudoroegneria spicata emerged over an extended period from February through June. Most other grasses and the 2 forbs began emerging in April and continued into June. Pleuraphis jamesii emergence did not begin until May. Although many seedlings of the 3 chenopod shrubs emerged, none survived, suggesting their episodic recruitment is more a function of survival than of emergence. Survival of 2 Chrysothamnus species was also low. Pseudoroegneria and Agropyron had the highest numbers of seedlings surviving on the moister site, followed by Elymus elymoides and Stipa comata . Survival of Agropyron , but not the native Elymus , was more depressed on the drier of the 2 sites planted in 1994. Stipa, Oryzopsis hymenoides , Pleuraphis , and Ephedra survived as well on the drier site as on the moister site, or better. On the 1995 planting sites Bromus was greatly reduced by the burn treatment, and, in contrast to the effect of burn treatments on the 1994 site, survival of all species except Oryzopsis and Ephedra was higher on burned than on unburned treatments. Overall, Stipa, Oryzopsis , and Pleuraphis had low emergence but consistently higher survival.  相似文献

Two molecular marker systems, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and microsatellites, were used to evaluate population diversity and differentiation in 4 northern Nevada Bromus tectorum populations. From 80 RAPD primers, we found 16 (20%) that yielded 165 strong repeatable bands. Of those bands, 60 (35.8%) were polymorphic. Of those, 21 met data-pruning guidelines for final analysis. RAPD variation was moderate (0.363, SE = 0.022), ranging from 0.312 to 0.404. Microsatellite variation was similar (0.234, SE = 0.051) but varied more widely, ranging from 0.009 to 0.551. All populations were out of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, as expected in a predominantly selfing species. RAPDs revealed significant differentiation (P Bromus rubens ).  相似文献

Although B. tectorum has been studied extensively, few studies have examined its dispersal and spread. We collected data from sites with B. tectorum in and around Rocky Mountain National Park to quantify the relationships between plant cover/density and seed rain and dispersal distance. Results suggest that there is a positive relationship between density within a patch and local seed rain and that B. tectorum exhibits relatively limited short-distance dispersal (where seeds fell in close proximity to plants and no seeds were found to have dispersed more than 0.1 m from the edge of a patch). These data can inform modelers and managers who are attempting to better understand population dynamics and options for controlling this species.

Bromus rubens and Bromus tectorum are now nearly ubiquitous components of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) flora. Introduced to the western United States in the late 1800s, they spread through the Mojave and Great Basin deserts in the early twentieth century. Since quantitative studies began on the NTS in 1957; Bromus spp. have greatly increased in frequency and density. By 1988 both species occurred in many places at densities exceeding 1000 individuals per square meter. They may significantly increase flammability of the vegetation and reduce success of native ephemeral species.  相似文献

We evaluated relationships between soil depth and vegetation standing crop components over a 3-year period on 3 adjoining pastures with similar size, vegetation, and soils on the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center in south central New Mexico. Soils on our study pastures are primarily light sandy loams varying from a few centimeters to 1 m or more in depth underlain by a calcium carbonate layer. Study pastures were ungrazed in 1995 and 1996 and conservatively grazed in 1997. Linear regression equations using perennial grass standing crop (kg ha -1 ) and honey mesquite ( Prosopis glandulosa Torr.) cover (%) as dependent variables and soil depth as the independent variable were significant ( P P = 0.78, n = 18), but a significant ( P = 0.01) negative correlation occurred on deep soils ( r = -0.67, n = 15). Perennial grass standing crop differed greatly among years when data were pooled across pastures, ranging from 64 kg ha -1 in 1995 to 248 kg ha -1 in 1997. Our study shows that soil depth has a major influence on Chihuahuan Desert vegetation. Perennial grasses are favored by shallow sandy soils while deep sandy soils favor honey mesquite.  相似文献

During winter 1996–1997 and summer 1997, we surveyed birds at 26 study sites in desert grasslands of Arizona and New Mexico to determine tolerance of birds to variability in plant composition and structure. The relationship between bird abundance and vegetative characteristics might be an important consideration in the development of management and restoration plans. Of the 49 bird species we observed, we examined 13 and 16 species in detail for winter and summer seasons, respectively. A noticeable shift in species composition occurred between 3% and 10% woody plant cover. During winter, Chestnut-collared Longspurs ( Calcarius ornatus ) and Horned Larks ( Eremophila alpestris ) showed significant positive relationships with grass cover and negative relationships with woody plant cover, occurring in greatest numbers where woody cover was <1%. The richness of sparrow species during winter was highest among sites with 6% to 15% woody plant cover. In addition to showing significant positive relationships with woody cover, Vesper Sparrows ( Pooecetes gramineus ), Black-throated Sparrows ( Amphispiza bilineata ), Brewer’s Sparrows ( Spizella breweri ), and Chipping Sparrows ( S. passerina ) showed significant positive relationships with shrub species richness. Our results showed that reductions of woody plant cover below 3% in combination with the presence of native grasses could substantially enhance the presence of several bird species. Maintenance of woody cover between 6% and 15% could increase use by a suite of other species, especially wintering sparrows.  相似文献

We assessed road edge effects on leaf-litter macroinvertebrates in laurel and pine forests in Tenerife (Canary Islands), studying composition, abundance, richness and diversity, and the role of environmental gradients. We sorted species to the finest taxonomic resolution possible and used a morphospecies approach when necessary. In all, 15,824 invertebrates were identified from 388 litter samples (from >500 species, five major phyla and 31 orders). Alien invasive species of Oligochaeta, Pulmonata, Isopoda, Diplopoda and Hymenoptera were frequent in both forests. Richness, diversity and rarefaction pointed to a disturbance threshold within the first 10 m off the road, and edge effects were steeper in laurel forest than in pine forest. Overabundant aliens were partially responsible for highly disturbed litter assemblages on this edge zone in both forests. Proximity to road edge caused gradients of disturbance of forest structure. Litter moisture, rock and litter cover in laurel forest, and grass and canopy cover in pine forest were the best predictors of community variation. Results seemed to give some empirical support to the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. This altered road edge zone may accumulate regionally causing net reductions of ecosystem area and quality, impacting on its integrity and biodiversity.  相似文献

Clearcutting and selective logging effects on red-backed voles ( Clethrionomys gapperi ) and deer mice ( Peromyscus maniculatus ) were studied (September–November, 1975; June–October, 1976) in Bridger-Teton National Forest, Wyoming. Five selective cuts (total 137 ha) removed 57 percent (range 34–74 percent) of the trees. One clearcut (9.6 ha) eliminate 84 percent of the trees. Soils remained mesic in selective cuts, but became xeric in the clearcut. Snap-trapping indicated that voles were most abundant on the unlogged and selectively cut mesic sites (76 percent of 408 captures), whereas deer mice were more common on the xeric clearcut (80 percent of 60 captures). Species composition remained unchanged on selective cuts following logging (77 percent voles of 256 captures), but changed from predominantly voles to mostly deer mice (80 percent of 60 captures) in the clearcut. Intraspecific age and sex ratios, litter sizes, and morphological measurements were compared between logged and unlogged areas.  相似文献

To assess the potential hazard from radioactive wastes, a plant with known radiosensitivity, Tradescantia clone 02, was grown in radioactive soil obtained from uranium mill tailings. The levels of radiation on these tailings varied from 0.03mR/hr (background) to a maximum of 3.00 mR/hr. Tradescantia grown in soil with a radiation level greater than 0.10 mR/hr evidenced significantly reduced reproductive integrity and fecundity, as measured by the number of stunted hairs per stamen, pollen viability, and numbers of somatic mutations. Based on these data, the radioactivity from uranium mill tailings has the potential to alter normal plant succession due to its detrimental effect on any species that is relatively radiosensitive.  相似文献

Losses in fecundity due to predispersal herbivory can be large; however, the effects of this loss on long-term population viability have rarely been investigated. I conducted a demographic study of Astragalus scaphoides (Fabaceae), a long-lived perennial endemic to east central Idaho and adjacent Montana, by following mapped individuals at two sites from 1986 to 1993. Astragalus scaphoides suffers losses of predispersal fecundity averaging nearly 50% from insect seed predation and inflorescence predation by insects and livestock. Cattle reduced fecundity by 0-85%. Nonetheless, estimates from matrix projection models indicate that both sample populations had positive growth in most years. Elasticity analyses revealed that population growth occurred in spite of relatively small contributions by recruitment compared to growth and survival of nonreproductive plants. Results suggest that populations of this long-lived perennial depend little on reproduction and recruitment for growth and can persist in association with seasonal-rotation livestock grazing.  相似文献

We investigated present indirect effects from a decade-old burn on the diets of stream fish. Based on soil instability and burn patterns from a 12–14-year-old wildfire complex, we separated 9 streams into 3 conditions: unburned, burned, and burned/scoured (i.e., experiencing a massive scour event 1 year post-burn). In the streams, we measured light levels and water temperatures, and we estimated fish density and biomass. We removed the digestive tracts from 9–15 rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) from each stream and used a gravimetric procedure to analyze gut contents. Canopy cover development may dictate the composition of dietary items. Greater amounts of aquatic invertebrates and inorganic material were found in trout from streams with reduced overhead canopy. Further, these streams had lower amounts of terrestrial invertebrates and organic materials in the diets of fish. Although trout abundance was not different among the stream treatments, fire-induced, indirect effects on fish diets were still evident more than a decade after the burn. This suggests that recovery rates for trout assemblages may take longer than predicted and may depend on riparian recovery.  相似文献

We investigated the present effects from a 10-year-old wildfire on leaf litter breakdown rates in 3 headwater streams in central Idaho. These systems experienced a massive debris flow one year after the fire. Based on soil instability and burn patterns, we identified 3 stream conditions: unburned, burned only, and burned/scoured. We placed leaf bags containing willow leaves ( Salix sp.) in each stream type and removed bags at various time intervals until all bags were collected 100 days after their introduction. Leaf material was dried and weighed, and decay rate coefficients were calculated. Macroinvertebrates colonizing the bags were enumerated and identified, and selected taxa were placed into trophic groups. We found that the unburned stream had the fastest leaf litter breakdown rate, the lowest level of incident light reaching the stream, and the largest amount of benthic organic matter. The burned/scoured stream was nearly opposite in all respects. Numbers of 2 detritivore invertebrate taxa, Serratella tibialis and Zapada oregonensis, were highest in the unburned stream but lowest in the burned/scoured stream. A third taxon, Baetis sp., showed the opposite relationship. Presence of predatory invertebrates did not affect detritivore abundance or leaf decay rate in the bags. Our research suggests that recovery response variables of some stream systems may not have returned to prefire levels even a decade after the initial wildfire. In this study, the recovery of our streams appears to be connected to the return of the riparian zone, though fire-induced debris flows may slow or alter final recovery of the stream system.  相似文献

Resource specialists at Dinosaur National Monument utilize both planned and unplanned wildland ignitions in big sagebrush ( Artemisia tridentata )--dominated plant communities to restore successional processes, maintain vegetation vigor, and promote diversified landscapes. Short- and long-term effects of prescribed burning on small mammal populations are not well understood. The objectives of this study were to (1) compare small mammal species richness, similarity, and diversity between paired burned and unburned treatment plots, and (2) assess long-term trends of small mammal community responses to burning. Five paired burned/unburned sites having similar vegetation, soils, elevation, and annual precipitation were selected. Prescribed or natural fires occurred on all sites between 1981 and 1995, followed by periodic small mammal removal (trapping) sampling (1--12 years post-burn). Small mammal species richness and diversity were generally higher on unburned than burned plots across post-burn sampling years and sites. Increased abundance of the deer mouse ( Peromyscus maniculatus ) following burning resulted in decreased community diversity. Species similarities between burned and unburned plots were low in early post-burn years but increased in later post-burn years. Short-term shifts in diversity and species similarity resulted from increased deer mouse abundance after burning. However, burning had no long-term impact on species richness and similarity, indicating minimal effect to other small mammal species.  相似文献

Seasonal wildlife observations were made along transects on 2 pastures conservatively grazed (36% use of perennial grasses) and 2 pastures moderately grazed (47% use of perennial grasses) in south central New Mexico in non-drought (1997) and drought years (1998). Experimental pastures were similar in soils, terrain, spacing of watering points, and brush cover. Average ecological condition score for the conservatively grazed pastures was 60% compared with 64% for moderately grazed pastures. Throughout the study total standing vegetation understory herbage levels were higher ( P P > 0.05) between conservatively and moderately grazed pastures. Black-tailed jackrabbit ( Lepus californicus ) sightings were higher ( P Antilocapra americana ), scaled quail ( Callipepla squamata ), mourning doves ( Zenaida macroura ), and desert cottontails ( Sylvilagus auduboni ) showed no differences ( P > 0.05) between conservatively and moderately grazed pastures. Dry conditions in 1998 depressed total wildlife sightings by > 50% compared to 1997. Both songbird and gamebird (particularly mourning dove) sightings were severely reduced in the dry compared to wet year ( P < 0.05). Our results are consistent with Nelson et al. (1997) that livestock grazing at intermediate levels had no effect on most Chihuahuan Desert upland wildlife species, and that drought years severely depress wildlife sightings.  相似文献

This study compared the abilities of two cool-season bunchgrasses to extract moisture from a drying soil and compared photosynthetic and stomatal responses of the two species as soil moisture supplies were depleted. When grown in 49-L pots in a greenhouse, Leymus cinereus extracted more water from the soil and maintained higher gas exchange rates to lower absolute amounts of soil water than did Agropyron desertorum . The soil water content at the lower limit of extraction was 10.3% for L. cinereus and 13.3% for A. desertorum . When soil moisture was expressed as extractable soil water, there was little difference between the species in pattern of water use. Both species maintained high stomatal conductances (g w ) and photosynthetic rates (A) until extractable soil moisture was reduced to about 15%. For field-grown plants under severe water stress, A was higher in L. cinereus than in A. desertorum at comparable leaf water potentials. The relationship between A and g w was similar for the two species; higher A in L. cinereus was a consequence of higher g w . Thus, higher A in L. cinereus is achieved through some sacrifice of water-use efficiency.  相似文献

Our objective was to clarify the effects of 10 identified variables on snipe activity (winnowing and calling) by demonstrating correlations between the variables and snipe activity. We monitored snipe at 2 study areas in southwestern Montana and northwestern Wyoming at all hours of the day and night during the 1996 and 1997 breeding seasons. We measured 10 variables at established points along transects that were situated through the middle of each study site (8 study sites total). A total of 1200 monitoring periods were conducted throughout the course of this study. Effects of each factor on snipe activity were considered by examining general trends in each factor's graphical representation. Our results identified 6 factors (season, time of day, lunar cycle, solar radiation, wind speed, and temperature) that are associated with snipe activity. Snipe were most active early in the breeding season during 2 twilight periods during the first and last quarters of the lunar cycle. Low solar radiation levels, wind speeds, and temperatures were also most ideal conditions for snipe activity. All 6 factors should be considered when attempting to detect, survey, or estimate snipe populations.  相似文献

In 80% of the years between 1975 and 1989 chorus frogs were able to produce offspring that completed metamorphosis and became members of the next generation. During 3 of these 15 years (1975, 1983, and 1986), floods annihilated chorus frogs in the breeding pond. Between 1905 and 1989 this geographically isolated population of Pseudacris regilla , the Pacific chorus frog, located at the western edge of the Great Basin in northwestern Nevada, became reestablished after 10 natural physical disturbances including spring flash floods, numerous kill-offs by sudden drastic rises in water temperature, and stream dry-ups. Ninety percent of the frogs in this population were shades of green with black dorsal speckles and eyestripes. Predators were the belted kingfisher ( Megaceryle alcyon ), western terrestrial garter snake ( Thamnophis elegans ), and domestic house cat ( Felix domestica ).  相似文献

I measured songbird abundance and vegetation cover in and around a 420-ha prescribed burn in a mountain big sagebrush community located at 2133 m elevation. Data were collected during the 3rd growing season after the fire. Brewer's Sparrow and Sage Thrasher occurred in lower abundance on sites that were largely or completely burned relative to sites that were outside the fire perimeter or within unburned islands of shrubs. The number of Brewer's Sparrow detections was linearly related to remaining sagebrush cover. In contrast, Horned Lark occurred at higher abundances on sites where shrub cover had been removed in the prescribed burn. Cover of perennial grasses and cover of 4 of the 5 most common forbs was greater on burned sites than on unburned sites.  相似文献

We examined effects of human foot traffic on age structures and densities of seedlings and saplings of Pinus edulis (Colorado pinyon) and Junisperus monosperma (one-seed juniper) in a heavily used urban park, Garden of the Gods, Colorado. Age structures show no stand-destroying disturbances, but they do contain small peaks 85-95 yr ago (minimum age), which have been interpreted as responses to heavy grazing. For Pinus edulis reverse J-shaped age structures indicate a strongly reproducing population, while flat age structures of J. monosperma show low present reproduction. Young trees showed strong preferences for establishing under existing trees and shrubs and not among herbs or on bare soil. Pinus edulis seedling density was reduced by 73% in heavily trampled areas compared to lightly trampled areas. However, there were no differences in density when only the area protected by rocks, shrubs, or trees was considered. This indicates that direct effects such as physical damage and soil erosion kill young trees, and indirect effects, such as lower seed production, do not cause the lower densities in heavily trampled areas. Pinus edulis saplings and J. monosperma seedlings and saplings showed no differences in density across trampling intensities. In heavily trampled areas of Garden of the Gods Park, recent increases in use have apparently reduced Pinus edulis seedling establishment enough that long-term regeneration is threatened. Managers of all pinyon-juniper woodlands must recognize that in areas strongly impacted by foot traffic, and also presumably by similar disturbances such as vehicle traffic, sufficient regeneration likely does not occur to replace trees. The areal extent of severely disturbed areas should be limited, and managers should seek to avoid further degradation of less damaged areas.  相似文献
