Xanthophryne is a toad genus endemic to the northern Western Ghats of India, with two extant sister species – Xanthophryne koynayensis and Xanthophryne tigerina. Both species are local endemics and endangered. We studied reproductive biology of these toads and found that they are specialized to the lateritic rocky outcrops at mid-elevations in high rainfall areas. Xanthophryne toads have sporadic, multiple spawning bouts lasting 2–4 days during early monsoon. In this explosive breeding behaviour, we observed male toads to engage in ‘pelvic thrusts’, a unique and novel behaviour among anurans. Females oviposit in shallow pools in depressions of lateritic boulders where their tadpoles metamorphose. These ephemeral rocky pools have limited resources and they desiccate rapidly with a break in the rains. To mitigate the stochastic risk of desiccation and subsequent large-scale egg/tadpole mortality, females may disperse their reproductive investment spatially and temporally in multiple clutches, and tadpoles metamorphose rapidly. Here, we describe the amplexus, spawning and male advertisement call, and provide a comparative account of the life history traits of the two Xanthophryne species. These toads face numerous threats and are in need of urgent conservation action. These toads, seemingly well adapted to the isolated rocky outcrops, offer an excellent opportunity to understand endemism, mating systems, anuran ecology and behaviour.  相似文献

This report includes data collected during an investigation by Brigham Young University personnel from 1971 to 1976, as well as a literature review. The fauna of the Kaiparowits Basin is represented by 7 species of amphibians (1 salamander, 5 toads, and 1 tree frog), 29 species of reptiles (1 turtle, 16 lizards, and 12 snakes), 183 species of birds (plus 2 hypothetical), and 74 species of mammals. Geographic distribution of the various species within the basin are discussed. Birds are categorized according to their population and seasonal status. Avian habitat relationships are discussed, and extensions of range are reported for 5 species of birds. Three threatened or endangered avian species occur in the basin. Four avian species seem to have declined significantly in numbers in recent years.  相似文献

We searched for Sebastes mentella and Sebastes viviparus hybrids in samples of redfish with external traits typical of S. mentella. The samples were collected in the Irminger Sea in 2007 (n = 131) and 2010 (n = 72). Hybrids were identified using MDH-2* locus coding malate dehydrogenase. Both samples contained hybrids (two and one individuals, respectively). The results of our investigations and previously published data show that interspecific hybridization may have a strong impact on the genetic structure of S. mentella in the Irminger Sea, presumably being one of the main reasons for the differentiation of allele frequencies of some genes between samples collected at different depths. This should be taken into consideration in studies of Irminger Sea redfish.  相似文献

Sipunculans from shallow depths ranging from 0 to 44 m, collected by two Chinese-German expeditions to Hainan Island (China) during the years 1990 and 1992, are recorded. Seventeen species in eight genera and five families are recognized from the total 271 individuals collected. An analysis of the sipunculan literature has shown that 10 of these species are new records for Hainan. Among them, Phascolosoma (Phascolosoma) meteori (Hérubel, 1904) also represents the first record for the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

The mangals of South Andaman Island were surveyed for the insect fauna of mangrove associates. The herbivorous insects collected were reared to adulthood on the hosts on which they were collected. The parasitoids that emerged during the rearings were also collected. Ninety‐six species of insect herbivores and nine species of hymenopteran parasitoids were collected during this study. Comparison with insects known to be phytophagous on true mangroves indicated that species overlap between insects on true mangroves and those on mangrove associates was minimal. Each of these plant communities apparently has its own distinct entomofaunal complex.  相似文献

Mosquitoes belonging to the Maculipennis Complex of Anopheles subgenus Anopheles were collected in 10 prefectures across Greece: Attiki, Evros, Florina, Fthiotida, Ioannina, Lakonia, Magnesia, Rodopi, Serres, and Xanthi. DNA was extracted from 276 specimens and sequences for the nuclear rDNA ITS2 region were obtained from 257 of these (93.1%). Four members of the An. maculipennis Meigen complex were identified: An. maculipennis, An. sacharovi Favre, An. melanoon Hackett, and An. messeae Falleroni. Species were identified based on correlation of their sequences with those available in GenBank. All four species have been incriminated as primary or secondary vectors of malaria. Species distributions in relation to potential threats of reintroduction of malaria in Greece are discussed. This study comprises the most complete study of the Maculipennis Complex in Greece to date, and contributes substantially to the current knowledge of the genetics and distributions of the four species.  相似文献

The ecology of polyps of Craspedacusta sowerbii has been poorly investigated. It is known that they live attached to hard surfaces. They have never been linked with any animal, in particular not with Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel), which is known to have only endosymbionts. This study was conducted in March 2004 in ?ingi-Lingi Lake. The lake is an oligo-mesotrophic man-made gravel pit in northeast Croatia. During this study, polyps were found singly or in colonies of two to five on willow twigs and on the shells of D. polymorpha collected from 8 m depth and on metal barrels. Brown hydra (Pelmatohydra oligactis) individuals were also present next to polyps of Craspedacusta on zebra mussel shells, collected from metal barrels. The presence of polyps of Craspedacusta and brown hydras together on live bivalve shells is significant, as we suggest that it marks the first record of commensalism of this kind.  相似文献

Exechohypopion therephaga sp. nov. (Bombyliidae) emerged from the pupa of Parapsilocephala ambocerina sp. nov. (Therevidae) collected near Wentworth, New South Wales, Australia. The adults, pupae and mature larvae of the bombyliid and therevid are described and illustrated. Because the therevid host was collected from soil as a larva, the first instar bombyliid planidium is presumed to attach to the therevid in the larval stage. This is the second known record of a therevid being parasitised. Both known cases occurred in Australia and involved a bombyliid parasitoid.  相似文献

Published fish blood parameters are limited to commercially cultured species (e.g. rainbow trout [ Oncorhynchus mykiss ] and channel catfish [ Ictalurus punctatus ]). However, as walleye ( Stizostedion vitreum ) and other fish increase in value to the angler, hatchery and fish managers will require data on these species. Blood sera were collected from live walleye in the field, creatinine values were determined colorimetrically, and health range values were established from these data. Creatinine levels of walleye serum (0.06-0.72 mg/dl) were higher in three species but lower than recognized in a recent catfish study. Creatinine levels may be important in predicting diseases in which the kidney is adversely affected.  相似文献

Lakes and wetlands in Mediterranean regions are overexploited and contaminated without sufficient local governmental control. The biodiversity of Salt Lake Ac?göl (Turkey), an internationally recognized ecosystem, is presently endangered by management plans. This study aims to analyse the ostracod community to establish its ecological status as a base for future paleoecological studies using ostracods to reconstruct the recent evolution of this wetland. Samples were collected seasonally and 13 species were recorded. Multivariate classification and ordination statistical methods revealed a major difference between assemblages related to the relative abundance of species tolerant of desiccation vs. species preferring permanent waters. Cyprideis torosa, mainly found in saline, low diversity sites, is a euryhaline species regarded as an indicator of future lake conditions if inappropriate water resource management continues.  相似文献

We describe species richness and habitat associations of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) collected during amphibian surveys of 355 water bodies in Glacier National Park (NP), Montana, in 2006–2008. We collected 9 taxa (in 7 genera) of mayflies that were identifiable to species. Callibaetis ferrugineus hageni was collected most frequently, followed by Siphlonurus occidentalis, S. phyllis, Ameletus celer, A. similior, Parameletus columbiae, Ephemerella dorothea infrequens, Baetis bicaudatus, and Leptophlebia cupida. Siphlonurus phyllis had not been reported in the western United States prior to our surveys, and P. columbiae is a species of concern in the region. The identifications of 4 additional taxa were uncertain due to the poor condition of specimens found at only one site ( Centroptilum sp. and Paraleptophlebia sp.) or because nymphal specimens could not be confidently identified ( Cinygma sp. and Cinygmula sp.). Species richness of mayflies in wetlands seems low compared to that in streams and lakes in Glacier National Park. We found the most species of mayflies in beaver ponds, where we detected some species not commonly associated with lentic water bodies. Our survey was the first extensive survey of wetland invertebrates in Glacier NP and only the second that we are aware of in western Montana.  相似文献

Three new species of Copidognathinae (Acari: Halacaridae) are described from the eastern coast of southern Africa (Mozambique; South Africa: Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal). Copidognathus caloglossae sp. nov. and Acarothrix umgenica sp. nov. were collected in mangrove habitats, whereas Copidognathus xaixaiensis sp. nov. was collected on a rocky shore. Acarothrix umgenica represents the first record of the genus Acarothrix Bartsch, 1990 from the African continent.  相似文献

This paper describes dipteran infestation of loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) sea turtle nests in northern Cyprus in 1996 and 1997. Insect larvae were collected from infested nests, reared to adulthood and identified to species. A minimum of 13.4% (1996) and 17.4% (1997) of loggerhead turtle nests and 3.3% and 20.7% of green turtle nests were infested in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Eleven dipteran species were found infesting turtle nests with one species (Sarcotachina aegyptiaca) being dominant. Gross estimates, utilizing the speeds of development for three species of sarcophagid showed that infestation was taking place differentially between the two turtle species. Various aspects of the effect of dipteran infestation on marine turtle nests in northern Cyprus and recommendations for future investigations are discussed.  相似文献

In the course of a survey carried out on the digenetic trematode fauna of three species of mullets Mugil cephalus, Liza macrolepis and Valamugil cunnesius collected from various brackish water localities at Visakhapatnam, 15 species of adult digenetic trematodes and 9 species of metacercariae were encountered.

The adult digeneans are distributed over 7 families as follows: Transversotrematidae (1), Haploporidae (6), Haplosplanchnidae (2), Lepocreadiidae (1), Gorgoderidae (1), Bunocotylidae (3) and Bivesiculidae (1). Five new species, Haploporus indicus, H. pseudoindicus, Lecithobotrys mugilis, Carassotrema bengalense and Saturnius valamugilis are described. Other species reported are: Transversotrema patialense, Pseudohapladena bengalense, Saccocoelioides martini, Haplosplanchnus purii, H. caudatus, Phyllodistomum lewesi, Crassicutis karwarensis, Saturnius segmentatus, Aphanurus harengulae and Paucivitellosus sp.

The nine species of metacercariae collected from mullets belonged to 5 families: Clinostomidae (1), Heterophyidae (5), Acanthostomatidae (1), Cryptogonimidae (1) and Didymozoidae (1). The various metacercariae collected are: Clinostomum sp., Haplorchis yokogawai, Centrocestus formosanus, Stellantchasmus falcatus, Stictodora sp., Galactosomum ussuriense, Atrophecaecum burminis and Exorchis sp.

The characteristic features of the trematode fauna of mullets are discussed. Support is given to Manter's ecological bridge theory that mullets act as links in the intertransfer of parasites between marine and freshwater habitats.  相似文献

Exomalopsis are ground-nesting species, and their food-niche breadth is little known due the difficulty in locating the nests and finding efficient bait plants to attract these bees. Some species of Exomalopsis were recorded as tomato, hot pepper and eggplant pollinators. Information about the food niche could be useful to increase Exomalopsis populations, providing consistent and comparable data for the enrichment of natural and crop areas with adequate plant sources. This study aimed to determine the food niche and the role of pollen size in the diet of E. fulvofasciata. We analysed pollen loads of 28 individuals of E. fulvofasciata collected from bait plants, in two natural areas of the Brazilian savannah. Only five pollen types belonging to the families Malpighiaceae, Solanaceae, Leguminosae, Myrtaceae and Lythraceae were important for this species. This result indicates that E. fulvofasciata is probably a polylectic species. However, we noticed that the Byrsonima used as bait plants contribute significantly for its larval provision, indicating that small pollen grains were more frequently collected.  相似文献

Ovigerous crabs of Nanocassiope granulipes (Sakai, 1939) were collected in South Korean waters and their larvae reared in the laboratory. Four zoeal stages are described and illustrated in detail. Morphological characteristics of zoea I, such as the antennal exopod, the endopod of the second maxilliped and the telson, are compared with other known first-stage zoeas from the Xanthinae. The firststage zoea of N. granulipes appears to be similar to those of Leptodius exaratus (H. Milne Edwards, 1834) and Macromedaeus distinguendus (de Haan, 1835).  相似文献

Specimens of Chinavia musiva were collected in Parque Estadual do Espinilho (Barra do Quaraí County, RS, Brazil). Insects were reared under controlled conditions (24±1°C; RH 70±10%; 12h L:12h D), and fed on green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Eggs of C. musiva differ from the pattern observed in other species of the genus due to chorion colour and surface, and aero‐micropylar processes, number and shape. Exclusive features of the species in the nymphal stage are head and thorax dull; variegated pattern of abdomen, and openings of the scent glands in conspicuous tubercles. Developmental time was, on average, 52 days; females laid more frequently egg masses with 14 or 42 eggs. Females collected from the field as nymphs exhibited higher reproductive performance than females reared on green beans as nymphs and adults, suggesting that wild hosts could be essential for the species life cycle.  相似文献

Nine species of mites of the genus Proctolaelaps were collected in flowers or phoretic in the nares of hummingbirds in Trinidad. Previously named species P. kirmsei , P. glaucis , and P. belemensis are redescribed, and six new species are described: P. jurgatus , P. mermillion , P. rabulatus , P. contumex , P. certator , and P. contentiosus . Proctolaelaps belemensis cyanocompsae is raised to specific status. Host plants are given for all species except P. mermillion , which was collected only from a hummingbird host. New World flower-inhabiting Proctolaelaps are grouped into two hypothetically monophyletic lineages, the kirmsei -group and the belemensis -group, on the basis of adult morphology. Seventy-two caddisfly species in 36 genera and 15 families were collected along the Little Colorado, Verde, Gila, and Colorado rivers in Arizona. Brachycentrids, hydropsychids, limnephilids, and uenoids made up nearly 50% of the assemblage in forested sites above 2200 m. Hydropsychids, hydroptilids, and leptocerids made up 75% of the assemblage in grassland watersheds between 2200 and 1000 m, and 80% at sites below 1000 m in desert watersheds. Species richness averaged 16 at sites above 2200 m elevation, 7 between 2200 and 1000 m, and 3 below 1000 m. H' diversity was typically >3 at sites above 2200 m and <2.5 below 2200 m. Each river had distinct faunas likely due to isolation of drainages across semiarid landscapes. Low S&oslash;rensen similarity values were measured for caddisfly assemblages in the highly regulated Colorado River and the other 3 rivers. Only 17 species were collected at 14 sites along 700 km of the Colorado River. Indicator caddisfly species are provided for altered and less disturbed drainages. We added 7 species not previously reported in Arizona for a total of 154 caddisfly species in the state. We provide a baseline of caddisfly indicators for monitoring changes in ecosystem health during the predicted long-term drought and population expansion in southwestern USA.  相似文献
