In vitro effect of dexamethasone in conversion of 4-14C progesterone in the fetal rat adrenal glands

Coxsackievirus B4 infection of spinal sympathetic ganglion

Summary Coxsackievirus B₄ infection of a spinal sympathetic ganglion of a squirrel monkey is described. Chromatolysis and neuronophagia were extensive. It is suggested that such viral sympathetic ganglial infections may be responsible for dysfunction of organ systems.Supported by the Cardiovascular Research Fund, the Rowell A. Zusammenfassung Neugeborene bursaektomierte Küken wurden mit aus der Thymus, Bursa fabricii und Leber isolierten Lipid- und Protein-Fraktionen behandelt und hernach durch menschliche Erythrocyten immunisiert. Einige dieser Fraktionen, einschliesslich der Leberproteine und Leberlipide, führen zu einer Erhöhung der Hämagglutinin-Produktion.

Spontaneous rhythmic contractions in isolated human coronary arteries

Changes in lactic dehydrogenase isoenzyme pattern in muscle of tumor-bearing mice

Studies on the mechanisms of neurulation in the chick: The intracellular distribution of Ca++1

Summary Coated vesicles were found to accumulate Ca⁺⁺ in neuroepithelial cells and may play a role in regulating the contractile activities of apical microfilament bundles during uplifting of neural folds in the chick.This study was supported in part by grants from the Research Council and the Charles and Johanna Busch Memorial Fund of Rutgers University.     

Deficits in synapse-to-neuron ratio due to early undernutrition show evidence of catch-up in later life

Summary 30-day-old rats undernourished from birth are known to have large deficits in the synapse-to-neuron ratio in certain brain regions. It has not been possible to demonstrate any statistically significant deficits in this ratio in animals undernourished from birth to 30 days but then provided with an ad libitum amount of food till 6 months of age.Acknowledgments. Antigonadotrophic effect of melatonin in male lizards (Callisaurus draconoides)

Summary Results of a preliminary experiment indicate that injections of melatonin elicit testicular regression in male lizards having maximally recrudesced gonads at the outset of study.Supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (No. BMS74-04861), the American Philosophical Society (Penrose Fund), and the Biomedical Research program at Colorado State University.

Subcellular localization of noradrenaline and ATP in C1300 mouse neuroblastoma

Summary A density and velocity gradient centrifugation study of C₁₃₀₀ mouse neuroblastoma showed that ATP is nearly absent from noradrenaline-containing granules and is mainly localized in mitochondria, suggesting that in this tissue ATP is not involved in the storage of noradrenaline.This work was supported by a grant from the ASLK Cancer Fund (Belgium).     

Local haemostasis in brain tumours

Summary The thromboplastic activity and the fibrinolytic activity were examined in 7 human meningiomas and 6 gliomas obtained at neurosurgery. Two different haemostatic patterns emerged, meningiomas having lower thromboplastic and higher fibrinolytic activity than that of gliomas. This difference might help to explain the better haemostatic capacity of gliomas during and after operation than that of meningiomas. Supported by Tore Nilson's Fund for Medical Research.     

Allogeneic effect on induction of thyroglobulin antibodies and thyroid lesions in mice

Summary All previous attempts failed to induce thyroglobulin antibodies or thyroid infiltrates in mice immunized with homologous thyroglobulin without adjuvants. However, an allogeneic effect obviated the need of adjuvants for triggering thyroglobulin-reactive lymphocytes to produce thyroglobulin antibodies or thyroid lesions.This work was supported by a grant from the Margaret Duffy and Robert Cameron C. The effects of prostaglandin E1 on the systemic and pulmonary circulations of intact dogs. The influence of urethane and pentobarbital anesthesia

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass Phenobarbital- und Urethan-Anästhesie nach Infusion von PGE₁ in den Kreislauf normaler Hunde verschiedene hämodynamische Reaktionen (Herzminutenvolumen, Herzfrequenz, Durchblutung der Peripherie) verursacht.Die Intrakoronarinfusion von PGE₁ mit der Narkose ergab einen negativ chronotropen und einen negativ inotropen Effekt.

The protective effect of polyriboinosinic acid-polyribocytidylic acid against the occurrence of galactosamine-induced liver cell injury in rat

Summary A marked increase of serum transaminase activities, histological changes of livers similar to those seen in viral hepatitis in man, and inhibition of hepatic protein synthesis were observed in rats following a single injection of D-galactosamine-HCl. These galactosamine-induced phenomena were prevented by the pretreatment of polyriboinosinic acidpolyribocytidylic acid 24 h before the galactosamine administration.This work was supported by a grant from Kanae Shinyaku Kenkyu-kai Fund. Inhibition of neural tube closure by ionophore A23187 in chick embryos

Summary Ionophore A23187 inhibited closure of the chick neural tube through its effects on cytoskeletal components.This study was supported in part by grants from the Research Council and the Charles and Johanna Busch Memorial Fund of Rutgers University. Lymphocyte reactivity in Imuran-treated guinea-pigs and in vitro effect of colchicine

Summary Imuran treatment significantly diminished macrophage migration inhibition in immunized guinea-pigs and the percentage of E-rosette forming cells in all treated animals. 10^–6 M colchicine in vitro significantly increased the percentage of E-rosette forming cells in Imuran-treated animals. The results suggest possible alteration of the lymphocyte receptors after treatment with Imuran.This work was supported by the grants of the Republic Research Fund of Serbia.     

Intrinsic forces alone are sufficient to cause closure of the neural tube in the chick

Summary An isolated neural plate or a postnodal piece of early chick embryos, when cultured under appropriate experimental conditions, can undergo morphogenetic movements and form tubular structures closely resembling neural tubes of early chick embryos.This work was supported by grants from the NIH (NS 23200 and NS 21730) and the Busch Fund of Rutgers University.     

Pancreatic islet cell damage in mice produced by coxsackie B1 and encephalomyocarditis viruses
