Interactions between α-MSH and sex steroids on the preputial glands of female rats

Résumé L'-MSH stimule la croissance des glandes préputiales de la rate intacte, cet effet est moins marqué après l'ablation des ovaires et s'atténue encore après castration et surrénalectomie ou castration et hypophysectomie. Chez l'animal castré, en doses liminaires, la progestérone accroÎt considérablement la stimulation produite par l'-MSH tandis que la testostérone exerce un effet comparable mais moins accentué. Le synergisme de la progestérone et de l'-MSH est encore observé, mais légèrement réduit, chez l'animal castré et surrénalectomisé ou castré et hypophysectomisé.     

In vitro development ofXenopus skin glands producing 5-hydroxytryptamine and caerulein

The granular glands of amphibian skin synthesize and store a large amount of bioactive amines and peptides which are structurally similar to mammalian brain-gut peptides. To investigate the development of peptide- and amine-producing cells in the granular glands, pieces of dorsal skin taken at various stages fromXenopus laevis tadpoles were cultured, and the contents of caerulein and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) were measured. When pieces of skin from tadpoles at stages 57 to 60 (Nieuwkoop and Faber stages) were cultured in a medium containing 10% fetal calf serum (FCS medium) or one containing FCS treated with charcoal (chFCS medium), the caerulein and 5-HT levels were increased for the six days of the incubation period. The caerulein content was lower in the chFCS medium than in the FCS medium. Addition of thyroxine to the chFCS medium had no significant effect on the caerulein content. These results show that the caerulein-and 5-HT-producing cells of the granular glands can develop in a culture system with FCS- or chFCS-containing media, and suggest that FCS contains substances which are absorbed by charcoal and stimulate development of the amine- and peptideproducing cells of the glands. In a preliminary search for correlation between caerulein and 5-HT synthesis, addition of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor to 5-HT, to the FCS medium increased 5-HT content and, conversely, caused significant decrease in caerulein content, suggesting that accumulation of caerulein in the granular glands is influenced by the amount of 5-HT synthesis. These studies indicate that this culture system is a useful model for investigating the development of peptide- and amine-producing cells.     

Post mortem increase of 5-hydroxytryptamine in rat brain after 5-hydroxytryptophan administration

Zusammenfassung Ratten mit und ohne Iproniazid-Vorbehandlung erhielten 30 min vor Dekapitation 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) i. p. Das intakte Hirn wurde bis zu 4 h bei 37° C, Zimmertemperatur und in 0·1n HCl aufbewahrt. In allen Fällen ergab sich eine starke postmortale 5-Hydroxytryptamin (5HT)-Vermehrung im Gehirn.Bei unbehandelten Kontrolltieren zeigte sich postmortal ein leichter 5HT-Abfall im Gehirn, der durch Iproniazid-Vorbehandlung aufgehoben wurde.     

Giant granules in adrenaline-secreting chromaffin cells of lizard adrenal glands after metyrapone administration

Summary Secretory granules of extraordinary size, some of them bigger than the cell nucleus, abound in the adrenaline cells of lizard adrenals after metyrapone injections during 7 days. In these granules, the bounding membrane is studded with ribosomes, and the core is formed by rounded small subunits. Some granules of this type are also found in noradrenaline cells. They may represent an exceptionally increased elaboration and storage of adrenaline, induced by metyrapone probably through its action on steroidogenic tissue.This research forms part of project No. 31.26.S1-1154 supported by the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científícas y Tecnológicas.     

Delay in skin allograft rejection in rats grafted with fetal adrenal glands

Resumen Se ha observado en este trabajo que el injerto de suprarrenales de fetos en ratas de 6 días de edad determina aumento del tiempo de supervivencia de aloinjertos de piel realizados al 10° día de vida en relación a los testigos y a ratas injertadas con suprarrenales de adulto. Un efecto similar se observó cuando se administró diariamente a partir del 6° día de vida 16-metil prednisona en dosis altas que producían gran trastorno del crecimiento, evidente disminución de peso del timo y en algunos casos muerte del animal.

Compensatory growth of the ovaries,adrenal glands and kidneys in blinded,anosmic rats

Résumé Chez les rats qui ont subi une ablation de la glande pinéale, la présence simultanée de perte de vue et d'anosmie empèchent la croissance compensatoire de l'ovaire chez la femelle et celle des glandes surrénales chez la mâle. Une hypertrophie du rein provoquée expérimentalement après une néphrectomie unilatérale n'est pas modifiée par la perte de vue et l'anosmie.

Distribution of radioactivity after administration of3H-5-hydroxytryptamine by three different routes to the musselMytilus edulis

Summary Intracardiac injection gives proportionately higher and earlier peak concentration in tissues that specifically accumulates it, i.m. injection gives slower but longer lasting accumulations, and topical application to a ganglia essentially localizes the drug in that structure.We wish to thank Drs Hiripi and Nemcsok for the demonstration of the intracardiac technique. Studies on a compound antagonistic to 5-hydroxytryptamine

Riassunto La 1-metil-8-carbobenzilossi-aminometil-10-ergoline (MCE) impedisce la morte dei feti in ratte gravide trattate con enteramina (5-HT). L'effetto massimo è ottenuto quando l'MCE è somministrato 3 h prima della 5-HT, ma si manifesta anche 14 giorni dopo una iniezione del composto.     

Reserpine and human platelet 5-hydroxytryptamine

Zusammenfassung Nach einmaliger intramuskulärer Injektion von 1 mg Reserpin sinkt beim Menschen der 5-Oxytryptamingehalt der Blutplättchen zwei Tage lang ab, um bis zum neunten Tag auf unbestimmbarem Wert zu verharren. Während dieser Zeit ist die 5-OT-Aufnahmefähigkeit der Plättchen vermindert. Der Oxytryptamingehalt der Plättchen erreicht seinen Ausgangswert erst ungefähr 3 Wochen nach der Reserpingabe.Die Ansicht, dass die Plättchen freies 5-Oxytryptamin aus dem Kreislauf aufnehmen, wäre mit diesem Ergebnis zu vereinbaren. Die Dauer des Effektes könnte bedeuten, dass Reserpin entweder auf Plättchenvorstadien im Knochenmark wirkt oder aber dass die Lebensdauer der Plättchen in Wirklichkeit länger ist, als neuerdings angenommen wird.     

5-hydroxytryptamine content of glioma

Résumé La teneur en 5-HT de tumeurs intra-crâniennes humaines, déterminée par une méthode biologique, est en général plus faible que celle du cortex cérébral adjacent. Cette observation n'est pas en faveur de l'hypothése que la 5-HT est localisée dans les cellules névroglies.     

Effect of methyl amphetamine on the brain 5-hydroxytryptamine content of isolated and aggregated rats

Zusammenfassung Amphetamin bewirkt eine Vermehrung von 5-Hydroxytryptamin im Gehirn von aggregierten Ratten, während Chlorpromazin diesen Effekt hemmt.
