Effects of retinoic acid on ascites cells of the TA3 mouse mammary carcinoma

Summary Retinoic acid caused a decrease in adhesiveness but no growth change in the allotransplantable TA3-Ha cell and no change in adhesiveness or growth in the strain specific TA3-St cell. Induction of lactation in precancerous hyperplastic alveolar nodules in the mammary gland of C3H/He Crgl mice

Résumé La sécrétion lactée se produit dans les nodules alvéolaires hyperplastiques de la glande mammaire des souris femelles intactes de la souche C3H/He Crgi, à la suite de l'administration du cortisol et de l'stradiol, mais non pas après l'emploi de l'strogène avec le progestérone. Lorsque l'hypophyse, l'ovaire et la glande surrénale ont été enlevés, les nodules montrent une sécrétion lactée sous l'effet du cortisol et de la mammotropine ou de la somatotropine et indiquent une sensibilité différentielle aux combinaisons hormonales lactogènes.

Increased melatonin levels after hemorrhagic shock in male and female C3H/HeN mice

Although hemorrhagic shock leads to significant alterations of several hormones, e.g. ACTH, corticosterone and -endorphin, it is not known whether plasma melatonin levels are affected under this condition and if so, whether the effects are comparable in males and females. Using a radioimmunoassay, it was found that plasma melatonin levels were significantly increased in male and proestrus female C3H/HeN mice immediately after hemorrhagic shock. However, in male mice, by two hours after hemorrhage and resuscitation, plasma melatonin returned to levels comparable to those seen in control and sham-operated animals. Proestrus female mice, on the other hand, showed significantly increased plasma melatonin levels at two hours after surgery when compared to unoperated control animals. Although the significance and biological role of the transient increased plasma melatonin levels after hemorrhagic shock remain to be determined, it appears that the pineal gland and/or an extrapineal source of melatonin, of both male and proestrus female mice responds to severe hypotension by increased release of melatonin.     

Ultrastructural study of somatotroph cells from mice bearing a fast growing transplanted hepatoma,in different periods of the tumor development

Summary The presence of a transplanted, fast-growing hepatoma (SS1-K) produces conspicuous ultrastructural changes in pituitary STH cells of C3H-S male mice. These changes are suggestive of an increased secretion of growth hormone only during the first stages of the tumor development. The hepatoma influence does not seem to be clearly related to the illumination regimen or time of killing.Acknowledgments. The authors wish to thank Miss G. Neira for technical assistance.

On the in vitro behaviour of mouse submaxillary gland cells. II. Metabolic differences between male and female C3H mice

Summary Submaxillary gland cells from female C3H mice were isolated, cultivated in vitro and their metabolic properties compared with those of male derived cells. Effect of carbon particles on the recovery of bone marrow stem cells after irradiation in LPS-resistant C3H/HeJ mice

Effect of RES-blockade on bone marrow cells was studied serially after irradiation in LPS-resistant mice. Injection of carbon particles reduced damage and accelerated recovery of marrow hemopoietic stem cells, indicating that LPS-resistant mice can react normally to RES-blockade.
