Influence of endogenous pyrogen on the cerebral prostaglandin-synthetase system

Summary The biotransformation of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins in vitro is specifically augmented by endogenous pyrogen to a degree depending on the concentration applied, providing that the microsomal fraction of the cerebral cortex is used as prostaglandin-synthetase system. This effect is inhibited by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. These findings are compatible with the hypothesis that prostaglandins might act as mediators of the febrile reaction induced by endogenous pyrogen.     

Behavioral fever induced in guinea-pigs by intrapreoptic pyrogen

Summary The preoptic area of the hypothalamus integrates not only the autonomic, but also the behavioral components of fever in guinea-pigs.Supported by USPHS Grant No. NS 14929.

Induction of cytochrome P 450 by phenobarbital in cats]

Phenobarbital administration to the Cat an animal hypersensitive to the actions of many toxic substances or to physiological compounds such as hormones, does not produce cytochrome P 450 induction. Consequently, hepatic storage of retinol remains unchanged. The specific and original characteristics of the Cat in this field are underlined by these results.     

Insomnia induced by P-chlorophenylalanine in cats. Its reversibility by intraventricular injections of indolamines

Intraventricular injection of 250 microgram of 5 HTP induces both slow wave and paradoxical sleep, after 20-60 min. latencies, in insomniac Cats pretreated with P-chlorophenylalanine. Direct injections of 5 HTP in several brain stem structures do not induce sleep. The long latency or paradoxical sleep induction and its suppression with chloramphenicol suggest that indolamines are not directly responsible for paradoxical sleep, but that they act by controlling the synthesis and/or the liberation in the periventricular system of some specific paradoxical sleep inducing factor.     

Inhibition of endogenous TSH in rats by antiserum to bovine TSH

Riassunto Gli autori hanno ottenuto in conigli un siero anti-TSH usando come antigene ormone bovino. Questo siero inibisce il TSH endogeno di ratti nutriti con dieta di Remington e trattati con tiouracile, impedendo cosi la formazione della iperplasia tiroidea. È stato anche osservato che il trattamento con siero anti-TSH mantiene normale il rapporto MIT/DIT cancellando le salienti alterazioni indotte dal trattamento con tiouracile.     

Inhibition by the enterotoxin of Vibrio cholerase of meiosis reinitiation of the Xenopus laevis oocyte induced in vitro by progesterone]

Progesterone reinitiates in vitro meiosis in Xenopus laevis oocytes. This action of the hormone can be abolished by the exotoxin of vibrio cholerae. The concentration of toxin which inhibits 50% of the progesterone (10 muM) action in about 2.5 pM. Binding experiments using 125I labelled toxin demonstrated the existence of high affinity binding sites (KD approximately 0.2 nM) located probably on the surface of the oocytes.

Release of noradrenaline from adrenergic transmitter granules by tyramine

Zusammenfassung Tyramin (3–50 µg/ml) setzt aus mikrogranularem Sediment von Kuhmilznerven Noradrenalin frei (Inkubation 30 min bei +20°C). Mit Dopamin und Octopamin wurde in denselben Konzentrationen keine sichere Wirkung beobachtet.     

Generalized inhibition of spinal reflexes induced by cutaneous nerve stimulation in unrestrained cats

Riassunto Nell'animale integro non anestetizzato la stimolazione a bassa frequenza delle fibre cutanee del gruppo II produce una riduzione generalizzata del tono posturale e dei riflessi spinali mono- e polisinaptici, che si accompagna di solito, ma non necessariamente, ad un quadro di sincronizzazione elettroencefalografica. In particolari condizioni sperimentali la stimolazione cutanea suddetta può anche precipitare il quadro di sonno desincronizzato.
