Naphthoquinone derivatives from the fungusHendersonula toruloidea

Summary 2 yellow naphthoquinone derivatives were isolated from several pathogenic strains ofHendersonula toruloidea Nattrass. They were identified as 2,7-dimethoxy-6-ethyl-5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone and 2,7-dimethoxy-5-hydroxy-6-(1-acetoxyethyl)-1,4-naphthoquinone by means of physico-chemical methods.Thanks are due to Mr A.J.M. van Beijnen, Laboratory for Organic Chemistry, State University of Utrecht, for optical rotation measurements.The authors are indebted to Mr C. A p-menthane derivative isolated from culture filtrates ofFusicoccum amygdali,Del.

Summary From culture filtrates ofFusicoccum amygdali, Del., a new compound, whose structure corresponds to 1,2,3-trihydroxy-p-menthane, has been isolated. Its discovery is of some interest since, to our knowledge, it is the first time that a monoterpenoid is isolated from a microorganism.

A further study of LDH isozymes in theRana esculenta complex

Summary Electrophoretic analyses of LDH isozymes in the 3 types of European green frogs by using the buffer system of Williams and Reisfeld demonstrated the occurrence of 4 allelic genes coding for the B subunits. Based on the distribution of these alleles and results from dissociation and recombination of the subunits, the hybrid nature of Rana esculenta is confirmed.This study was supported in part by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Georges-und-Antoine-Claraz-Schenkung.

Some further data concerning the determination of the mesonephros

Zusammenfassung InAmblystoma besitzen die präsumtiven Urnierenanlagen starke Tendenzen zur Selbstdifferenzierung, während der induktive Einfluß von seiten des primären Harnleiters eine mehr untergeordnete Rolle spielt. Dieser Einfluß auf die Differenzierung der Urnierenanlagen wird erst nach dem Auswachsen des Harnleiters zur Kloake ausgeübt. Der Differenzierungsgrad der Anlagen zeigt jedoch eine gewisse Abhängigkeit vom funktionellen Zustande des Harnleiters. Nach Entfernung der Vorniere ist die Differenzierungszone der Urnierenanlagen in verschiedenen Fällen ziemlich stark kranialwärts verschoben, was einen hemmenden Einfluß der Vorniere auf die Differenzierung der Urnierenanlagen im kranialen Abschnitt des Rumpfes andeuten könnte.

Zusammenfassung Ähnlich wie Serotonin und LSD-25 vermindert BOL-148, ein Lysergsäurederivat, das keine Halluzinationen erzeugt, die durch den Balken fortgeleiteten, postsynaptischen Potentiale. Vorbehandlung mit BOL-148 macht das Versuchstier für ungefähr eine Stunde unempfindlich gegen Serotonin. BOL-148 blockiert anscheinend im Zentralnervensystem wie auch in der Peripherie den Serotonineffekt. Es wird versucht, zu erklären, weshalb diese Droge keine Halluzinationen bewirkt.     

Starfish saponins VII. Structure of luzonicoside,a further steroidal cyclic glycoside from the pacific starfishEchinaster luzonicus

Summary On the basis of comparative chemical and spectral data, the structure of the major saponin, luzonicoside, from the starfishEchinaster luzonicus has been elucidated as2. This is a further example of a novel class of steroidal cyclic glycoside from starfish of the genusEchinaster. Its structure includes a ⁷, 3,6-dioxygenated-23-oxosteroidal moiety, already found in the saponins ofEchinaster sepositus, and a trisaccharide moiety, -D-galactopyranosyl-(12) -L-arabinopyranosyl-(12)--D-glucuronopyranosyl, bridging C-3 and C-6 of the steroid.This contribution is part of the Progetto Finalizzato Oceanografia e Fondi Marini del C.N.R., Roma.Acknowledgments. Summary A new pyrroloterpene, molliorin-c (III), has been isolated from the spongeCacospongia mollior. StructureIII was assigned to molliorin-c on spectral grounds and confirmed by synthesis.This investigation was supported by a grant of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Rome.     

A further proof of polarization vision ofNotonecta glauca and a note on threshold intensity for eliciting the plunge reaction

Summary Polarized UV light from a platform on the ground can attract backswimmers and elicit plunge reactions. Threshold intensity is independent of the overall UV-intensity in the surrounding space. Unpolarized UV light attracts the animals only when the intensity is higher than that of the surroundings. These results show that polarized UV light can be discriminated from unpolarized UV light independently of intensity.
