Photoperiodicity in the male rosefinch

Summary In male rosefinches (Carpodacus erythrinus) 12 h non-stimulatory photoperiods (12L12D) were as effective in stimulating testicular recrudescence, as were long photoperiods (18L6D) when presented as several intermittent symmetrical photoperiods. The results are discussed with regard to the hypothesis that photoperiodic effects in birds are mediated by circadian rhythms.This investigation was supported by a UGC grant to PDT.

A sex cycle in the male

Zusammenfassung Physiologische Untersuchungen verschiedener Sexualfunktionen bei Kaninchen, Bullen und Ratten erbrachten im Verlaufe einiger Jahre Hinweise auf einen männlichen Sexualrhythmus, der gewisse Ähnlichkeiten mit dem weiblichen Östruszyklus erkennen lässt. Zyklische, quantitative Schwankungen in der Zahl der Spermien, dem Volumen des Ejakulats, der Fertilität, der sexuellen Erregbarkeit, der Körpertemperatur und der urethralen Zellexfoliation wurden nachgewiesen. Die Ergebnisse von Kastrationsversuchen sprechen für eine hormonale Steuerung dieses Zyklus. Einige Beobachtungen lassen daran denken, dass auch bei Männern ein ähnlicher Zyklus besteht.

Antifertility activity of trimethylphosphate in male rats

Summary The toxic effect of trimethylphosphate on rat testes was investigated after oral dosing with 250 mg/kg for either 5 days/week for 30 days or 6 days/week for 60 days. Heat stress response of male germ cells

The vast majority of mammalian testes are located outside the body cavity for proper thermoregulation. Heat has an adverse effect on mammalian spermatogenesis and eventually leads to sub- or infertility. Recent studies have provided insights into the molecular response of male germ cells to high temperatures. Here, we review the effects of heat on male germ cells and discuss the mechanisms underlying germ cell loss and impairment. We also discuss the role of translational control in male germ cells as a potential protective mechanism against heat-induced germ cell apoptosis.     

Bone marrow in male and female rats

Summary Sex differences of high significance in the marrow weight relative to femur volume, as well as to body weight, were found in adult rats. A positive significant correlation was found between the femur volume and the marrow volume in both sexes, while a negative significant correlation between femur density and the marrow content (mg/mm³) exists only in male rats.     

Ecdysteroids in the adult male blowflyCalliphora vicina

Summary Male adult blowflies contain ecdysteroids. A considerable amount of ecdysteroid is concentrated in the testes and gives rise to a high local concentration. Analysis by high performance liquid chromatography and thin-layer chromatography indicate that ecdysterone is the most prominent ecdysteroid in male flies. The results can explain several hormone-dependant processes.

Naloxone shortens ejaculation latency in male rats

Summary Naloxone, a specific inhibitor of opioid receptors, lowers ejaculation threshold in the male rat coupled with receptive females.This study was sponsored by grant from Tecnofarmaci S.p.A.-Pomezia-Roma (Italy). Naloxone was kindly offered by Salars, Como (Italy)     

Absence of recombination in the male ofCeratitis capitata

Summary The linkage relationship between a morphological and a biochemical locus was studied. Results suggest that recombination does not occur in the male of the Mediterrannean fruit fly although its meiosis is typically chiasmatic.Publicacion técnica gen. No. 603.Acknowledgments. Recombination in the male housefly,Musca domestica

Summary Autosome II recombinations of up to 30.7% were found in male houseflies bearing a Y-chromosome translocation on autosome II. This is the highest recorded rate of recombination found in male houseflies, therefore indicating another possible source of genetic variation. The male crossover rates were related to map distances and resulted in an inaccurate estimate for one of the loci. Explanations are provided. Male crossing-over is related to cytogenetics of the Y-chromosome.     

Effect of immunization of male rabbits against androstenedione

Summary After active immunization of male rabbits against androstenedione and with increasing antibody titre the concentration of androstenedione and testosterone in peripheral blood increased more than 1000-fold resp. 20-fold above values of control animals. On histological examination of the testes a marked Leydig's cell hyperplasia was found, though there was no difference in testis weight.     

Cyclic variations in luteinizing and follicle stimulating hormone excretion by male rabbits,indicating a male equivalent to the oestrous cycle

Summary Cyclic variations of the urinary concentrations of gonadotropins in the male rabbit have been demonstrated. The mean durations of the cycles, 5–7 days, are close to that of the oestrous cycle of the female rabbit.
