A cautionary note on pentacyanoammonioferrate use for determining L-canavanine occurrence in biological materials

Summary Caution must be taken in the prevelant use of the pentacyanoammonioferrate reagent for the detection of L-canavanine in biological materias. This reagent reacts with L-histidine at neutral pH to form a pentacyanoammonioferate-histidine complex that is mistaken readily for its canavanine-containing counterpart.This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (PCM-78-20167). Studies on a compound antagonistic to 5-hydroxytryptamine

Riassunto La 1-metil-8-carbobenzilossi-aminometil-10-ergoline (MCE) impedisce la morte dei feti in ratte gravide trattate con enteramina (5-HT). L'effetto massimo è ottenuto quando l'MCE è somministrato 3 h prima della 5-HT, ma si manifesta anche 14 giorni dopo una iniezione del composto.

Summary Under conditions of constant darkness, rhabdom volume and the amount of visual pigment chromophore show circadian changes in the compound eye of the crabHemigrapsus sanguineus. The present results indicate that an intrinsic circadian biological clock is involved in the control of the changes.

Daunomycin-bands are similar to Q-bands on chromosomes of Vicia faba

Summary Lin et al. discovered fluorescent bands on human chromosomes stained with daunomycin (D-bands). These bands looked like Q-bands. We demonstrate D-bands, which look like respective Q-bands, in Vicia faba and infer that the similarity between D and Q banding is general.Acknowledgment. We are indebted to Mr G. And to end on a poetic note: Galen's authorial strategies in the pharmacological books

This paper examines the authorial strategies deployed by Galen in his two main pharmacological treatises devoted to compound remedies: Composition of Medicines according to Types and Composition of Medicines according to Places. Some of Galen's methods of self assertion (use of the first person; writing of prefaces) are conventional. Others have not received much attention from scholars. Thus, here, I examine Galen's borrowing of his sources' 'I'; his use of the phrase 'in these words'; and his recourse to Damocrates' verse to conclude pharmacological books. I argue that Galen's authorial persona is very different from that of the modern author as defined by Roland Barthes. Galen imitates and impersonates his pharmacological sources. This re-enactment becomes a way to gain experience (peira) of remedies and guarantees their efficacy.     

Preliminary evidence that a dopamine receptor antagonist blocks the prolactin-inhibitory effects of melatonin in anosmic male rats

Summary Previous studies have shown that daily afternoon injections of melatonin in anosmic male rats result in depressed accessory sex organ weights and serum prolactin levels. The present data indicate that the prolactin-inhibitory effect of melatonin may be mediated via the dopaminergic system.This work was supported by NIH Biomedical Research Support Grant No. 3150-80.     

Identification of a virus similar to hepatitis B virus in non-A non-B hepatitis]

Hepatitis B virus-like particles (including DANE particles) with DNA polymerase activity but negative for HBs Ag have been identified in NON-A, NON-B hepatitis sera positive for HC Ag. Although specifically associated with the particles, HC Ag is not a surface antigen of the hepatitis C virus identified here for the first time. The relationship of this agent with HBV seems obvious, and deserves further study.
