Glucose, and not trehalose, was found to be the main blood sugar inAplysia californica. Changes in blood glucose in response to stress produced by electric shock were measured in blood obtained both from animals dissected within ten minutes of shocking and from catheterized animals at various intervals, up to two and a half hours after the shock. Electric shock increased blood glucose levels. The rise in blood sugar continued as long as two and a half hours after shock.  相似文献

On oral administration to alloxan diabetic rabbits, allicin produces an increase in its hypoglycemic action with relation to dose. A short-term treatment with allicin, as well as with tolbutamide, significantly reduced the blood sugar levels and glucose nitrogen ratio of the above animals.  相似文献

Although hemorrhagic shock leads to significant alterations of several hormones, e.g. ACTH, corticosterone and -endorphin, it is not known whether plasma melatonin levels are affected under this condition and if so, whether the effects are comparable in males and females. Using a radioimmunoassay, it was found that plasma melatonin levels were significantly increased in male and proestrus female C3H/HeN mice immediately after hemorrhagic shock. However, in male mice, by two hours after hemorrhage and resuscitation, plasma melatonin returned to levels comparable to those seen in control and sham-operated animals. Proestrus female mice, on the other hand, showed significantly increased plasma melatonin levels at two hours after surgery when compared to unoperated control animals. Although the significance and biological role of the transient increased plasma melatonin levels after hemorrhagic shock remain to be determined, it appears that the pineal gland and/or an extrapineal source of melatonin, of both male and proestrus female mice responds to severe hypotension by increased release of melatonin.  相似文献

In the enzymatic procedure for blood sugar by means of glucose oxidase, acid protein precipitation of blood by perchloric acid or trichloracetic acid liberated oxidizing substances, which enhanced the coloration density in oxidizing the reduced chromogen of the reaction mixture, independently of the hydrogen peroxide generated from glucose, and would give false high values of glycemia, if additional precautions had not been taken. These substances, increasing considerably with times and temperature of blood conservation, would be of peroxide nature, and would accumulate in red blood cells during their exposure to air.  相似文献

Summary It is well known that after exhausting muscle work glucose (or saccharose) leads to quick recovery in man. Experiments on rats have shown that in adult animals 50% of all creatine is present as creatine-phosphate (CP). In old animals above 22 months, only about 25% is present as CP. Diets with a 50% glucose content lead in old animals, in rest, to 50% CP in the muscle. Also after exhausting work on glucose diet the restitution is so complete that about 50% CP is present. The main reservoir of energy for the restitution of muscle, ADP ATP, comes from the breakdown of CP. The problem may be discussed whether high glucose diet may be damaging insulin production by exhaustion.  相似文献

Treatment of alloxan diabetic rabbits with glibenclamide, the most potent of the sulfonylureas, for a period of 2 months, significantly ameliorated the diabetic condition. It produced a decrease in serum and liver lipids, amino acids, serum urea, blood sugar and urine sugar; increase in body weight, serum and liver proteins, liver glycogen, glucose tolerance and serum and liver acid labile phosphates. Summary The action of blood sugar depressing sulfonylureas on glucose and oxygen uptake, as well as on glycogen content and formation of C14O2 from uniformly labelled C14-glucose was investigated in rat hemidiaphragms incubated in phosphate buffer. The following results were obtained: (1) Tolbutamide and Carbutamide increased the glucose uptake. (2) Tolbutamide decreased the glycogen-content. (3) Oxygen uptake as well as formation of C14O2 were increased by Tolbutamide. (4) The action of Tolbutamide and insuline was equal with respect to glucose uptake but different as regarding the glycogen content, oxygen uptake and CO2-formation.It is concluded that sulfonylureas increase glucose oxidation in the rat hemidiaphragm probably without increasing insulin sensitivity. To our knowledge this mechanism of action has hitherto not been described.  相似文献

Summary Incubation of fresh defibrinated blood at 37°C increases the volume of red cells and decreases their permeation rate for glucose. The kinetics of sugar transport show direct proportionality between rate and the osmotic content of red cells. The measured volume changes and the changes of osmotic content calculated from the glucose permeation curves are in good agreement. Adenosine reconstitutes the increased volume and the decreased permeation rate in red cells. Therefore the decrease in permeation rate is explained by the increase in volume.  相似文献

Studies of C-peptide cellular effects show that not only the full-length native peptide but also specific C-terminal fragments are biologically active in in vitro systems. In the present study, the effect of five C-peptide fragments and the native peptide on whole-body glucose turnover was studied in streptozotocin diabetic rats using the insulin clamp technique. Insulin was infused intravenously at 18 pmol kg–1 min–1 for 90 min and blood glucose concentration was clamped at 8 and 4 mM in diabetic and non-diabetic animals. A steady state was reached during the last 30 min of the study period. Rat C-peptide II and fragments comprising residues 27–31 and 28–31 were effective in augmenting glucose turnover in diabetic rats (+100% to 150%), while no significant effects were seen for segments 1–26, 11–19 and 11–15. The metabolic clearance rate for glucose during infusion of C-peptide or fragments 27–31 and 28–31 in diabetic rats was similar to that seen in non-diabetic animals. We conclude that C-terminal tetra- and pentapeptides, but not fragments from the middle segment of C-peptide, are as effective as the full-length peptide in stimulating whole-body glucose turnover in diabetic rats.Received 18 December 2003; received after revision 19 January 2004; accepted 21 January 2004  相似文献

Summary Adult rats were subjected to either a sham operation (S-rats) or a 60% partial pancreatectomy (P-rats). Both P- and S-rats were normoglycemic and normoinsulinemic after surgery. Four weeks later, the animals were injected i.v. with 1 ml of either 0.9% (w/v) saline or 30% (w/v) D-glucose, and after 5 min whole pancreatic blood flow (PBF) and islet blood flow (IBF) were measured, using a microsphere technique. In the saline-injected P-rats both PBF and IBF values were, higher than in S-rats (p<0.001 for both values). Administration of glucose had no effects on PBF in either S- or P-rats when compared to saline-injected animals. IBF was, however, markedly increased (p<0.01) by glucose in S-rats in comparison with saline-injected S-rats, whilst no difference in IBF was observed between glucose- and saline-injected P-rats. The fraction of PBF diverted through the islets (fIBF) was approximately 10% in S-rats and 20% in P-rats. Glucose increased fIBF in S-rats, but had no effect in P-rats. In conclusion, in S-rats a glucose-stimulated insulin release is accompanied by an increase in IBF, but this is not observed in P-rats.  相似文献

The 24-h activity patterns of various enzymes were determined in human serum, red blood cells and white blood cells of maternal and umbilical cord blood. Blood was drawn from the brachial vein of mothers and from the umbilical cord within ten minutes after delivery. Corresponding blood specimens were obtained from 83 spontaneous labors, occurring at different hours over a period of 60 days. For each variable (variable = activity of a specific enzyme in one of the blood components) the results were grouped according to delivery hour, forming a 24-h pattern which was analyzed to elucidate time dependency. Five out of six corresponding maternal and fetal variables were similar with regard to pattern and peak time. The activity rhythms of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and glucose phosphate isomerase in red blood cells of mothers and fetuses possessed a significant bimodal pattern. The activity rhythms of the latter enzyme in white blood cells and sera exhibited a significant 24-h period. Hexosaminidase activity exhibited a distinct 24-h rhythm in maternal white blood cells, but no significant rhythm could be detected in the fetal white blood cells. The activity of hexosaminidase showed, identical 24-h patterns in maternal and cord serum when analyzed by best fit cosine, and no significant time-dependency when analyzed by ANOVA.  相似文献

The authors investigated basal levels of plasma immunoreactive growth-hormone in the rat (R-GH) after administration of 3 different anesthetic drugs: urethan, chloral hydrate and gamma-hdroxy-butyrate (GHB). Lowest R-GH concentrations (5 +/- 3 ng/ml) are observed after urethan; they are significantly higher (15 +/- 4 ng/ml) after chloral hydrate but this anesthetic also causes hyperglycemia (210 +/- 30 mg/100 ml). Normal blood glucose levels are observed under GHB narco-analgesia which elicits a clear-cut R-GH secretory episode (70 +/- 5 ng/ml); basal values (12 +/- 3 ng/ml) are maintained for several hours thereafter.  相似文献
