The primary asymmetry of the distribution of PGCs in the germinal epithelia of the chick embryo is the result of a numerically unequal distribution of these cells in the left and right vascular networks. A statistical proportionality exists between the increases in the degree of primary asymmetry and those in the degree of asymmetry of distribution in the circulation.  相似文献

Statistical analysis of quantitative data obtained from a population of 493 chick embryos shows that the degree of primary asymmetry of PGC distribution in favour of the left side of the embryo is highly significant. Our previously published kinetic interpretation of the same data is confirmed and the origin of the primary asymmetry is discussed.  相似文献

Numerous intramitochondrial paracrystalline inclusion bodies (ICIB) were observed in the germinal plasm of a mid-blastula, and in primordial germ cells (PGCs) after their migration to the germinal ridges, in Rana ridibunda, R. lessonae and R. esculenta. In oogonia the number of ICIB decreases rapidly. Single ICIB are observed in the germ cells up to the leptotene stage; they have never been observed in pachytene oocytes. In diplotene oocytes that have reached a diameter of about 100 microns ICIB are visible again, and their number increases concomitantly with oocyte growth.  相似文献

Primary cilia are solitary, microtubule-based protrusions of the cell surface that play fundamental roles as photosensors, mechanosensors and biochemical sensors. Primary cilia dysfunction results in a long list of developmental and degenerative disorders that combine to give rise to a large spectrum of human diseases affecting almost any major body organ. Depending on the cell type, primary ciliogenesis is initiated intracellularly, as in fibroblasts, or at the cell surface, as in renal polarized epithelial cells. In this review, we have focused on the routes of primary ciliogenesis placing particular emphasis on the recently described pathway in renal polarized epithelial cells by which the midbody remnant resulting from a previous cell division event enables the centrosome for initiation of primary cilium assembly. The protein machinery implicated in primary cilium formation in epithelial cells, including the machinery best known for its involvement in establishing cell polarity and polarized membrane trafficking, is also discussed.  相似文献

The young Paludin ovary, characterized by its tubular morphology, contains at birth two types of cells: the germinal ones, and others which give later follicular cells. There is no significant cytological difference between the primordial germinal cells of female and male gonad. Among the several cytologic criteria that allow one to distinguish the germinal line from the non germinal one, the most constant is the presence of septate junction between the non germinal cells.  相似文献

The problem of pollsters is addressed which is to forecast accurately the final answers of the undecided respondents to the primary question in a public opinion poll. The task is viewed as a pattern‐recognition problem of correlating the answers of the respondents to the peripheral questions in the survey with their primary answers. The underlying pattern is determined with a supervised artificial neural network that is trained using the peripheral answers of the decided respondents whose primary answers are also known. With peripheral answers as inputs, the trained network outputs the most probable primary response of an undecided respondent. For a poll conducted to determine the approval rating of the (former) Philippine president, J. E. Estrada in December 1999 and March 2000, the trained network predicted with a 95% success rate the direct responses of a test population that consists of 24.57% of the decided population who were excluded in the network training set. For the undecided population (22.67% of December respondents; 23.67% of March respondents), the network predicted a final response distribution that is consistent with the approval/disapproval ratio of the decided population. It is concluded that the charged (guanidinium) group interacts with a negatively charged acid grouping in the membrane. Multicellular organisms have to survive in an environment laden with numerous microorganisms, which represent a potential hazard to life. Different strategies have been developed to ward off infections by preventing microorganisms from entering surfaces and by preventing the attack of microorganisms that have already entered the epithelia. Therefore, it is not surprising that epithelia are equipped with various antimicrobial substances that act rapidly to kill a broad range of microorganisms. This review summarizes our present knowledge about epithelial peptide antibiotics produced in plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates including humans. There is now strong evidence that in addition to constitutively secreted peptide antibiotics, others are induced upon contact with microorganisms or by proinflammatory cytokines. beta-Defensins represent one family of vertebrate antimicrobial peptides, members of which are inducible and have recently been identified in humans. The defensin-characteristic local expression pattern may indicate that specialized surfaces express a characteristic surface antimicrobial peptide pattern that might define the characteristic microflora as well as the density of microorganisms present on the surface.  相似文献

Summary Findings in the human ovary confirmed the fact already pointed out in animal ovaries that under the influence of oestrogens the germinal epithelium is capable of forming new oocytes. Whether the germinal epithelium of the mature woman can form new oocytes under normal conditions cannot be determined as yet, but the present findings allow the conclusion that neo-oogenesis during the reproductive period of women seems possible. Further investigations, now in progress, are required to determine this possibility.  相似文献

Epithelial cells which line mucosal surfaces (e.g. lung, intestine) play a central role in the coordination of the inflammatory response. In both the healthy and diseased mucosa, epithelia lie anatomically positioned in close proximity to a number of other cell types, including leukocytes, fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells and vascular endothelia. This complex architecture supports a unique microenvironment for biochemical cell-cell crosstalk. Our previous studies and work by others have elucidated lipid mediator signaling networks emanating from epithelial cell-cell interactive pathways, and have defined a number of targets for development of effective therapeutics. This short review will focus on recently defined pathways of lipid mediator function in the mucosa, particularly with regard to the role of the epithelium.  相似文献

Incorporation of E-cadherin into the adherens junction is a highly regulated process required to establish firm cell-cell adhesion in most epithelia. Less is known about the mechanisms that govern the clearance of E-cadherin from the cell surface in both normal and pathological states. In this study, we found that the steady-state removal of E-cadherin in primary cultured pig thyroid cell monolayers is slow and involves intracellular degradation. Experimental abrogation of adhesion by a Ca2+ switch induces rapid cell surface proteolysis of E-cadherin. At the same time, endocytosed intact E-cadherin and newly synthesized E-cadherin accumulate in intracellular compartments that largely escape further degradation. Acute stimulation with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) or forskolin prevents all signs of accelerated E-cadherin turnover. The findings indicate that TSH receptor signaling via cyclic AMP stabilizes the assembly and retention of E-cadherin at the cell surface. This suggests a new mechanism by which TSH supports maintenance of thyroid follicular integrity.Received 23 February 2004; received after revision 14 May 2004; accepted 26 May 2004  相似文献

Summary The paper deals with the effects of indole-3 acetic acid on the histology of the gonads and their development inDacus dorsalis Hendel (Diptera; Tephritidae). Flies were topically treated with solutions of different concentrations. This treatment effectively reduced the size of gonads when applied to newly-emerged flies. Most severely affected parts were the germinal regions of the gonads. The number of sperm bundles was much reduced in the treated testes as compared to controlled ones.Acknowledgment. The majority of human cancers are initiated when a single cell in an epithelial sheet becomes transformed. Cell transformation arises from the activation of oncoproteins and/or inactivation of tumor suppressor proteins. Recent studies have independently revealed that interaction and communication between transformed cells and their normal neighbors have a significant impact on the fate of the transformed cell. Several reports have shown that various phenomena occur at the interface between normal and transformed epithelial cells following the initial transformation event. In epithelia of Drosophila melanogaster, transformed and normal cells compete for survival in a process termed cell competition. This review will summarize current research and discuss the impact of these studies on our understanding of how primary tumors emerge and develop within a normal epithelium.  相似文献

Intermediate filament proteins form an essential part of the cytoskeleton and provide topological order to cells and tissues. These features result from their intrinsic property of self-organization and their response to extrinsic cues. Keratins represent the largest subgroup among all intermediate filament proteins and are differentially expressed as pairs of type I and type II intermediate filament proteins in epithelia. Their primary function is to impart mechanical strength to cells. This function is illustrated by patients with keratin mutations and by gene-deficient mice. Additional functions include their participation in the response to stress, cell signalling and apoptosis, and thus the keratin cytoskeleton appears far more dynamic than previously anticipated. This may result from hyperphosphorylation and possibly from interaction with associated proteins. How signalling networks affect keratin organization, turnover and function and vice versa will be a major challenge for future investigations.  相似文献

Vertebrate epithelial appendages are elaborate topological transformations of flat epithelia into complex organs that either protrude out of external (integument) and internal (oral cavity, gut) epithelia, or invaginate into the surrounding mesenchyme. Although they have specific structures and diverse functions, most epithelial appendages share similar developmental stages, including induction, morphogenesis, differentiation and cycling. The roles of the SHH pathway are analyzed in exemplary organs including feather, hair, tooth, tongue papilla, lung and foregut. SHH is not essential for induction and differentiation, but is involved heavily in morphogenetic processes including cell proliferation (size regulation), branching morphogenesis, mesenchymal condensation, fate determination (segmentation), polarizing activities and so on. Through differential activation of these processes by SHH in a spatiotemporal-specific fashion, organs of different shape and size are laid down. During evolution, new links of developmental pathways may occur and novel forms of epithelial appendages may emerge, upon which evolutionary selections can act. Sites of major variations have progressed from the body plan to the limb plan to the epithelial appendage plan. With its powerful morphogenetic activities, the SHH pathway would likely continue to play a major role in the evolution of novel epithelial appendages.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to suggest that the maximum (or minimum) of a number of primary forecasts may make a valuable addition to the forecasting accuracy of a combination of forecasts. Such forecasts are readily computable. Theoretical results are presented for two unbiased forecasts with correlated normally distributed errors, showing that the maximum (minimum) of two forecasts can have a smaller error variance than either of the primary forecasts and the forecast error can have low correlation with the primary errors. Empirical results are obtained for two different sets of forecasts available in the literature, and it is observed that a combination forecast including the maximum and/or minimum has attractive forecasting properties.  相似文献

Summary Morphological changes of atrophic testis, obtained by treating normal rats with fluoroacetamide, are studied at various times after treatment. The data show that the testicular germinal epithelium is fully regenerated 165 days after treatment.  相似文献
