Cortisol-induced migration of eosinophil leukocytes to lymphoid organs

Summary Cortisol induces a migration of eosinophil leukocytes from the blood to several lymphoid organs, such as the spleen, lymph nodes and thymus, but not to other tissues. This migration explains the cortisol-induced blood eosinopenia, which is much more pronounced in intact than in splenectomized animals.Acknowledgments. Ureteral contractions induced by rat urine in vitro: Probable involvement of renal kallikrein

Summary Rat urine, even at a 110 final dilution in Tyrode's solution, stimulates contraction of the ureteral musculature in vitro. This effect can be ascribed to the presence of kallikrein or a kallikrein-like enzyme in urine. Isometric contractions of ureters were prevented by previous addition of aprotinin to the organ bath. Allergic encephalomyelitis: Inhibition of cellular passive transfer by exogenous and endogenous steroids

Zusammenfassung Injektionen des Antientzündungssteroids Dexamethasone oder eine Hypersekretion des endogenen Kortikosteroids als eine Reaktion zum unspezifischen Stress verhindern die zelluläre passive Übertragung allergischer Enzephalomyelitis. Deshalb kann angenommen werden, dass Steroide die enzephalitogene Wirkung von vollkommen immunisierten Lymphoidzellen verhindern.

One-sided sexual isolation betweenDrosophila takahashii andDrosophila pseudotakahashii

Summary In order to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships betweenD. takahashii andD. pseudotakahashii, 2 closely related allopatric species, sexual isolation was studied by the male-choice method. The present data indicate that there is a one-sided mating preference between these species. On a basis of the results, their evolutionary sequence is discussed.We are indebted to Dr I. R. Site of sex pheromone biosynthesis in the female housefly,Musca domestica L.

Summary The primary site of sex pheromone biosynthesis in the female housefly is the abdominal integument tissue, whereas the contribution of the legs is relatively minor. A substantial portion of the sex pheromone components are, however, transferred from the abdomen to the legs, probably as a result of grooming.Acknowledgment. Interaction between 6-hydroxydopamine and rhodopsin in vivo in the rat retina

Résumé Nous avons observé que l'injection de la 6-hydroxydopamine dans l'humeur vitrée des rats adaptés à la lumière bloquait le rétablissement de la sensibilité rétinale pendant l'adaptation à l'obscurité subséquente au traitement. Il est possible que cette observation soit une conséquence de la réaction du produit de l'oxydation de la 6-hydroxydopamine avec les groupes nucléophiliques de la rhodopsine.

Variations de la différence de potentiel électrochimique des chlorures chezNitella en présence de benzène sulphonate

Summary The chloride electrochemical potential difference between the inside of cells ofNitella translucens and some external solutions, where Cl has been progressively replaced by benzenesulphonate, has been measured by means of Ag-AgCl electrodes. It appears that benzenesulphonate moves into the cell by an electrogenic pump and that the uptake of Cl byNitella is not in contradiction with a carrier hypothesis.

Hypothalamic tyrosine hydroxylase activity,plasma gonadotropin and prolactin levels after aminooxyacetic acid in ovariectomized rats

Summary Plasma concentrations of gonadotropin, prolactin and hypothalamic tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity were measured in ovariectomized rats treated with aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA), a drug which elevates brain GABA levels. Hypothalamic TH activity was significantly increased with a significant decrease in prolactin (Prl) release. Plasma levels of gonadotropins were not modified by AOAA. These results support an inhibitory action of GABA on Prl release possibly mediated through hypothalamic dopamine.Supported by grants from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi. Sulfhydryl groups,copper, diphenylamine reaction and some enzymes in the serum of rats with 6-sulfanilamidoindazole arthritis

Zusammenfassung Bei oraler Gabe von täglich 125 bzw. 250 mg/kg 6-Sulfanilamidoindazol zeigten am 9. Tag 93% der Ratten Arthritis der hinteren Extremitäten. Im Serum waren Sulfhydrylgruppen um 40% abgesunken, Kupfer um 82% und Diphenylaminreaktion um 55% angestiegen. Die Fermente Lysozym, LDH, LAP und GOT sowie die Entzündungseinheiten blieben unbeeinflusst.

Plasma thyrotrophin concentration in the foetal calf

Effect of seasonal variations and cold acclimation on serum transaminase activity of common Indian frogRana tigrina

Summary A definite seasonal change is observed in 2 transaminases, SGOT and SGPT ofR. tigrina. Cold acclimation significantly depresses transaminase activity of serum.Acknowledgments. Lymphatic metastasis of tumour; persistent transport of cells

Summary A model of lymphatic metastasis established by injecting Walker rat carcinoma cells into the rat footpad was used to study the output of tumour cells from the footpad. The lymphatic efferent from the footpad was cannulated in a group of rats with advanced neoplasm; it was shown that the output of tumou cells was continuou over periods up to 90 min and ranged from 10²–10⁵ cells/min.Acknowledgment. Distribution of H3-dimetacrine in rat cerebral cortex by electron microscopic autoradiography

Summary The cellular distribution of H³-dimetacrine in rat cerebral cortex was studied by electron microscopic autoradiography. A considerable proportion of autoradiographic grains (40.6%) was located over the synaptic areas, while the other structures (i.e., dendrites, axons, glial and neuronal cells) contained less autoradiographic activity.Acknowledgments. The effect of continuously cooling the hypothalamic preoptic area on antibody titre in the rat

Summary Continuous cooling of the hypothalamic preoptic area for 5 days, as well as sublethal infection withSalmonella enteritidis, increased the titre of antibodies against sheep erythrocytes, suggesting that the febrile response stimulates the humoral immune response.We thank Dr W. Mannheim from the Institute of Hygiene for kindly supplying the cultures ofS. enteritidis. Deficiency in renomedullary prostaglandin synthesis related to the evolution of essential hypertension

Summary Continued PG synthesis in the early stages of essential hypertension might reflect an activation of the renal antihypertensive function in respect to neurogenic and/or hormonal pression stimuli, subsequently a deficiency of renal PG synthesis related to irreversible changes with the kidney would lead to the prepoderance of a pressure mechanism, resulting to a further increase of blood pressure.We thank Dr.J. Immunogenicity of fatty acid anilides in rabbits and the pathogenesis of the Spanish toxic oil syndrome

Summary Fatty acid anilides, the major xenobiotic found in the cooking oils responsible for the Spanish toxic oil syndrome, are immunogenic for rabbits as ascertained by a skin test reaction, the characterization of specific antibodies against anilides and the immunofluorescent detection of anilide dependent antigens in tissue slices from treated animals.Acknowledgments.
