Histochemical localization of cholinesterases in the neural tissue of the pineal in the rhesus monkey

Summary The neural tissue of the monkey pineal contains both acetyl and butyryl cholinesterases. Acetylcholinesterase was localized in the cisternae of the nuclear membrane, rough endoplasmic reticulum, on the plasma membrane of the neurones, and on the axolemma of both non-myelinated and myelinated fibres. The enzyme was not found in the axosomatic or axo-dendritic synapses. It is therefore suggested that the pineal neurones have a cholinergic function rather than a cholinoceptive one.This study was supported by the WHO.     

Autoradiographic localization of 5-hydroxytryptamine in monkey pineal gland

Zusammenfassung Die Verteilung von aus 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan entstandenem Serotonin in der Zirbeldrüse von Affen wird beschrieben.     

Radiation-released histamine in the rhesus monkey as modified by mast-cell depletion and antihistamine.

4000 rads of mixed gamma neutron radiation administered to rhesus monkeys released a significant amount of histamine into their circulation. When the monkeys were treated with a mast-cell histamine depleter (compound 48/80) for 4 days and then irradiated, no increase in circulating histamine was seen. When 48/80 was give 20 min after irradiation, only a slight increase in histamine was seen, indicating that 4000 rads had released most of the mast-cell histamine.     

Central neural control of pineal melatonin synthesis in the rat

To investigate a possible central neural influence on nocturnal pineal metabolic activity in rats, frontal transsections of the stria medullaris thalami were conducted. Enzymes involved in melatonin synthesis, i.e. N-acetyltransferase and hydroxyindole-O-methyl-transferase, exhibited reduced activities in operated animals when compared to controls. These results indicate a modulatory role of central structures on nocturnal pineal indole metabolism.     

Histochemical localization of carbonic anhydrase in fowl proventriculus

Summary The carbonic anhydrase activity in fowl proventriculus was studied by the histochemical method of Hansson. The activity was observed in the mucose membrane cells and in proventricular gland cells. These results, about which there is disagreement in the literature, are discussed in the text.     

Anti-androgenic action of cyproterone acetate in the epididymis of the rhesus monkey

Summary Cyproterone acetate (1 M) inhibited the binding of labeled testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the caput and cauda epididymides of the rhesus monkey. The same concentration of the anti-androgen failed to inhibit androgen binding in the ductus deferens, prostate and seminal vesicles.The investigation was supported by financial assistance from the Indian Council of Medical Research and the University Grants Commission. Distribution of calcitonin cells in the thyroid glands of normal adult rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta.

The calcitonin cells of adult rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta are located in the central region of thyroid along the median axis. The anterior and posterior poles, the isthmus and peripheral regions of thyroid are completely devoid of C cells. The parathyroid also lacks C cells.

Histochemical localization of carbonic anhydrase in Malpighian tubules ofCulex pipiens

Summary Carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity has been localized histochemically by Hansson's method in Malpighian tubules ofCulex pipiens. The enzyme has been observed on membranes of the cytoplasmic inclusions of Malpighian cells; no CA activity has been found in other cytoplasmic structures. The possible meaning of the localization of the enzyme is discussed.     

Quantitation of cutaneous blood circulation in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Zusammenfassung Die Durchblutung der Haut von Rhesus-Affen (Macaca mulatta) wurde mittels Verteilung radioaktiver Kügelchen gemessen und beträgt etwa 7% des HerzMinutenvolumens.     

Effect of substrates on the mechanical performance of rhesus monkey papillary muscle

Summary This study examines the effect of different substrates on mechanical performance of excised papillary muscles from rhesus monkeys which had been divided into a control group and an experimental group fed a high fat diet for 5 months prior to sacrifice. The results show that performance is affected by available substrate for both groups. The performance of the experimental group was depressed relative to control with the short chain fatty acid, butyrate (C4), producing a monotonically decreasing force-frequency response. Relative to other mammals, isolated rhesus papillary muscles exhibited a protracted treppe which was sensitive to -adrenergic blockade with propranolol.Acknowledgments. I would like to thank Dr R.M. Zusammenfassung Die Anwesenheit von Lipiden im Kern der Zellen des Blutes und der hämopoetischen Organe wurde histochemisch nachgewiesen. Die Lipide scheinen ausschliesslich oder stark überwiegend in der Kernmembran und in den Nukleolen lokalisiert zu sein.
