An electrophoretic polymorphism that mimics a true genetic polymorphism in Triturus cristatus carnifex (Amiphibia, Urodela)

Phosphoglucomutase electrophoretic patterns have been studied in 60 tail homogenates of Triturus cristatus carnifex. Our results show that the same sample produces a different electrophoretic pattern with homogenate ageing; a new band of intermediate mobility appears, together with the one produced by the fresh preparation. The phenomenon can mimic a true genetic polymorphism when differently stored samples are analyzed.

Summary Using³H-ouabain autoradiography, Na⁺–K⁺-ATPase has been localized on the basolateral membranes of ciliated and nonciliated cells in the oviduct (pars recta, p. convoluta I, II, III) of the European fire salamander,Salamandra salamandra. The mucous and seromucous gland cells of the p.convoluta I, II, III, however, do not show any significant labelling. An asymmetrical distribution of ouabain binding sites is a main feature of transporting epithelia.

The karyotype,C-bands and AgNO3-bands of a lungless salamander from Korea:Onychodactylus fischeri (Boulenger) (Amphibia,Urodela)

The karyotype of a lungless salamander,Onychodactylus fischeri, from Korea was analyzed and compared with that of the Japanese congeneric species,O. japonicus. In both species the diploid karyotype consists of78 chromosomes, including 6 pairs of large chromosomes, 6 pairs of medium-sized ones, and the remaining 27 pairs of microchromosomes. The chromosome number ofO. fischeri, 2n=78, is, like that ofO. japonicus, the largest so far reported in the order Urodela. C-banding showed that constitutive heterochromatin inO. fischeri was mainly in the centromeric regions and near the secondary constrictions of the large chromosomes. AgNO₃-bands were located in the secondary constrictions associated with C-band heterochromatin.     

Contribution of divalent cations to the maintenance of membrane potentials in the oocytes of Pleurodeles waltlii Michah (Amphibia, Urodela)]

When the external concentration of Ca and Mg is changed, the oocyte membrane potential, in the Urodela Amphibian: Pleurodeles waltlii, is not significantly modified. The addition of chelator agents, EGTA and EDTA in Ca, Mg free Steinberg solution promotes a membrane depolarisation and the rise of membrane conductance. It is concluded that divalent ions Ca++ and Mg++ are needed to maintain a potential difference between internal and external medium of the oocyte.     

An ammoniacal silver staining technique for mitotic chromosomes ofTriturus (Urodela: Salamandridae)

Summary An ammoniacal silver staining technique was applied to mitotic metaphase chromosomes of 2 species of Newts (Triturus). The method is useful for identifying nucleolar organizer regions. Analyse des Paarungsrufes vonPelodytes punctatus (Daudin 1803) (Amphibia,Pelobatidae)

Summary The mating call of Pelodytes punctatus was analyzed by oscillograms and sonagrams. Above water surface, 2 types of call differing in several parameters are uttered in alternation. There is also a release call. The mating call, not uttered in series and consisting simply of uniform, short, noise-like sound pulses, seems rather undifferentiated compared with the Pelobatinae, a view supported by the more primitive habits ofPelodytes.     

New chromosome numbers in Australian Leptodactylidae (Amphibia,Salientia)

Fra questi ultimi, il problematicoRheobatrachus, completamente acquatico, possiede alcuni microcromosomi come i membri più primitivi dell'ordine.     

Ultrastructural localization of 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity in the glandular tissue cells of the testis of Pleurodeles waltlii Michach. (Amphibia, Urodela)]

With the potassium ferricyanide method, the localization of the sites of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity has been investigated in the glandular tissue cells, previously fixed, of the Pleurodeles testis. An abundant copper ferrocyanide precipitate, the final reaction product, is observed in the vicinity of the external faces of the membranes of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, or in contact with them. A very weak reaction occurs in mitochondrial cristae.     

Artificial triploid hybrids by interspecific mating ofOdontophrynus (Amphibia,anura)

Résumé Des hybrides triploïdes ont été obtenus par croisement deOdontophrynus cultripes, amphibien diploïde, avecO. americanus, tétraploide. Les hybrides interspécifiques présentent normalement 33 chromosomes dans les cellules somatiques. Les hybridesO. cultripes ×O. americanus sont plus viables que lesO. americanus ×O. cultripes .

Somatic chromosomes of Indian burrowing toad,Uperodon globulosum (Gunther) (Anura; Amphibia)

Summary Somatic chromosome complements of the Indian burrowing toad,Uperodon globulosum, have been described for the first time. The 2n number is 26 (NF=52) in both the sexes. No heteromorphism in relation to sex chromosome pair has been recorded. Deviations from 2n number (2n=10–28) have been noticed in the cells of different specimens. Cytogenetic studies of Hynobiidae (Urodela). XIV. Analysis of the chromosome of a Chinese salamander, Batrachuperus pinchonii (David)

The chromosome number of a Chinese salamander, Batrachuperus pinchonii, was re-examined. Adults and embryonic specimens had a diploid number of 66, with 33 bivalents during meiosis, in contrast to previous reported results. Furthermore, when C-banding analysis was performed with embryos, chromosomes with banding patterns homoeologous to those of Salamandrella keyserlingii and Hynobius species were found. It appears, therefore, that Batrachuperus, Salamandrella and Hynobius might be derived from a common ancestral species in eastern Asia.
