Hedgehog signaling in vertebrate and invertebrate limb patterning

Invertebrate and vertebrate limbs have very different anatomies and modes of development. Despite these differences, recent studies demonstrate that a significant overlap exists in the signals used to pattern invertebrate and vertebrate limbs. One of these signaling molecules is Hedgehog, a secreted protein that functions to coordinate growth and proliferation along the anterior-posterior axis of developing limbs. Recent studies indicate that the mechanism of action, regulation and function of Hedgehog signaling in Drosophila and vertebrate limb development are often quite similar, yet at other times are distinct. Here we highlight the similarities and differences between the use of Hedgehog signaling in these two systems.

Summary Specific activity of glutamine synthetase inSqualus acanthias (spiny dogfish) central nervous system regions was highest in the cerebellum and lowest in the spinal cord. Summary Silybin (I), silydianin (II) and silychristin (III), the main constituents of silymarin, inhibit the formation of prostaglandins in vitro. Blood-forming tissues in orthopteran insects: An analogue to vertebrate hemopoietic organs

Résumé Des cellules sanguines différenciées sont produites tout au long de la vic larvaire et imaginale des Insectes Orthoptères par des tissus hématopoïétiques spécialisés. Nos études morphologiques et expérimentales soulignent l'analogie que présentent ces tissus avec les organes hématopoïétiques des Vertébrés, à la fois sur le plan structural et sur la plan fonctionnel.     

Effect of the scorpion,Heterometrus fulvipes (C. Koch), venom on some enzyme systems in rat (albino) tissues

Summary Sublethal doses ofHeterometrus fulvipes venom decreased NADP-specific isocitrate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase activity levels and increased NADP-specific glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase activity levels during a 48-h-period.Acknowledgments. Converting enzyme content of different tissues of the rat

Résumé On a dosé l'enzyme de conversion dans différents tissus du rat au moyen d'une méthode chimique mesurant la libération d'histidyl-leucine à partir du substrat synthétique Z-phe-his-leu. Le poumon contient au moins 8 fois plus d'enzyme que tous les autres tissus étudiés. Il en contient notamment plus de 100 fois plus que le foie.     

Nucleoside aminohydrolase,an enzyme involved in the degradation of deoxycytidine

Zusammenfassung Hohe Nukleosidaminohydrolase-Aktivitäten finden sich in Niere, Leber und Darm von Hamstern. Bei Mäusen hängt die Aktivität vom Tierstamm ab und steht in Beziehung zur Deoxycytidinausscheidung.     

L-gulonolactone oxidase is present in the invertebrate,Limulus polyphemus

Summary L-Gulonolactone oxidase (EC 1.1.3.8) which catalyzes oxidation of L-gulonolactone to L-ascorbic acid was detected in tissues ofLimulus polyphemus.     

Radioimmunoassay of an invertebrate peptide hormone — the crustacean neurosecretory hyperglycemic hormone

Summary Antibodies against hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) ofCarcinus were raised in rabbits by injection of extract from sinus glands which contain high concentrations of CHH. The antiserum neutralizes the biological activity of CHH and binds¹²⁵J-CHH. A RIA for CHH was established and was used to measure the hormone content of sinus glands.Dedicated to Prof. M.
