Radioprotective effect of phytohemagglutinin in mice

Zusammenfassung Es wird ein bemerkenswerter Strahlenschutz durch Phytohämagglutinin (PHA-P, Difco) bei mit nahezu tödlich wirkenden Röntgenstrahlendosen exponierten Mäusen beobachtet. Der Grad des Strahlenschutzes scheint eine Linearfunktion der angewandten Dosis zu sein.     

Hematopoietic alterations produced by long-term treatment with phytohemagglutinin

Resumen La administración de FHA, en dosis de 5 mg/100 g de peso, por períodos de 4 a 6 meses a ratones de la razas C3H y Suiza, causa hiperplasia del sistema limforeticular, que se acompaña de alteraciones mínimas en la sangre periférica. El número de células blásticas en sangre fué bajo y dentro de los límites normales. Estos estudios indican que una dosis relativamente baja de FHA no produce un aumento permanente de células blásticas (reacción leucemoide) en estas cepas de ratones.     

Decreased survival time of insulin-treated mice subjected to hypoxic decompression

Résumé On a constaté que les souris traitées à l'insuline possèdent une sensibilité élevée à la décompression hypoxique. Ce résultat concorde avec l'hypothèse d'une relation inverse entre la quantité de glucose dans le sang et la sensibilité d'un hôte à une grande variété de «stressors».

Reduced fertility in male mice following treatment with niridazole

Zusammenfassung Nach einmaliger i.p.-Injetion von 700 mg/kg Niridazol wurden männiiche Mäuse wiederholt mit unbehandelten Weibchen wöchentlich über 2 Monate hinweg gepaart und die Ova gesammelt. Es konnte eine starke Herabsetzung der Befruchtungsraten 3–4 Wochen nach Paarung festgestellt werden, was die Annahme einer Wirkung auf die meiotische Teilung der Spermatozyten und Spermatiden nahelegt. Nach der 7. Woche trat eine Normalisierung der Fruchtbarkeitsrate ein.

Prolonged survival of AKR mice following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation

Zusammenfassung Die Mehrzahl der AKR Mäuse, die nach Immunosuppression und Transplantation von Knochenmark und lymphoiden Zellen allogener H₂-identischer Spender die «Graft-versus-Host» Reaktion überlebten, zeigten signifikant verlängerte mittlere Überlebenszeiten gegenüber Kontrolltieren, welche mit Immunosuppression allein oder Immunosuppression plus sygenen Zellen behandelt wurden.

Alteration of humoral antibody production following in vivo administration of phytohemagglutinin

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass Phythämagglutinin (PHA) die Antikörperbildung gegenBrucella abortus bei der Maus merklich herabsetzt, aber nur dann, wenn PHA vor dem Antigenstimulus verabreicht wird und die immunologische Zweitreaktion (secondary response) unverändert bleibt.

Prolongation of the survival of skin grafts in mice by PUVA treatment

The combined application of psoralen and UVA radiation to skin grafts induced a prolongation of the survival time of the grafts in mice. This was observed using the H-Y barrier, an allogeneic barrier without H-2 disparities, and a strong H-2 incompatible barrier. The effect is probably due to a reduction of antigen-presenting cells, or to other, unknown mechanisms.

Spermatocyte selection during meiosis following mitomycin C treatment in mice

Summary In mice treated with mitomycin C, elimination of spermatocytes is observed during meiotic division, whereby an increase in number of the eliminated cells is closely related to an increase in the frequency of spermatocytes with chromosome aberrations at M-I.     

Increased resistance in mice to Listeria monocytogenes after treatment with a fraction from an inflammatory granuloma]

The multiplication of Listeria monocytogenes in the spleen was decreased between the 3rd and the 11th day following the inflammatory reaction induced in Mice by subcutaneous implantation of talc embedded in a calcium phosphate gel into the dorsal area. A similar activity was observed after injection of SO4 (NH4)2 fractionated extracts from granuloma. The major activities were found in the 33% saturation precipitate and in the 80% saturation supernatant.     

Stem cells in the peripheral blood of rauscher leukemic mice

Zusammenfassung CBA Mäuse zeigen nach der Infektion mit dem Rauscher Virus einen starken Anstieg hömopoetischer Stammzellen («colony-forming units») im peripheren Blut. Nach 21 Tagen wird im Zustand der peripheren Erythroblastose eine 50-fache Zunahme gefunden.

Enhanced survival of germfree mice after infection with irradiated scrapie brain

Zusammenfassung Nachweis, dass nach Injektion mit-bestrahltem «Scrapie»-Hirn keimfrei aufgezogene Mäuse länger als normale überleben. Das Ausmass der Astrogliose war im allgemeinen der Schwere der klinischen Symptome proportional. Die Theorie wird gestützt, dass das hochgradig hitze-, strahlungs- und enzymbeständige Material «Scrapie»-infizierter Mäuse die Induktion eines latenten Viruses bewirkt.     

Increase in the survival time of mice exposed to ionizing radiation by a new class of free radical scavengers

Summary N-acyl dehydroalanines react with and scavenge mainly superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical (HO^.). The ortho-methoxyphenylacetyl dehydroalanine derivative, indexed as AD-20, protects mice against damage resulting from total body X-irradiation, as measured by the increase in their survival time. AD-20 increases the LD₅₀ at 30 days from 6.1 to 7.3 Gy in animals exposed to a wide range of X-rays (6 to 10 Gy). The dose reduction factor (D R F) of AD-20 is 1.20. We postulate that such radioprotective effect may result from its free radical scavenging activity.

Modifications similar to those induced by estrogen treatment were observed. It is concluded that both estrogens and zeranol share the same activity on the tissues examined.

Effect of magnesium pemoline on the survival of mice with ehrlich ascites tumor

Zusammenfassung Magnesium Pemolin, ein zentralnervöses Reiz- und gutes Schutzmittel gegen Radiumbestrahlung, verlängert die Lebensdauer von Ehrlich-Ascites-Tumor-Mäusen, und zwar mit oder ohne zusätzlichen Einfluss einer Dosis nichttödlicher Bestrahlung (500 R).
