Conversion of testosterone to androstenedione by liver homogenates of testicular feminized mice

Summary Liver homogenates of testicular feminized (Tfm) mice carrying the protective (o^hv) gene were found to be less capable of converting testosterone to androstenedione than Tfm without the protective gene.This work was supported by the Medical Research Council of Canada, No. MT 4192 and Ortho Pharmaceutical Company.     

Suppression of adjuvant arthritis by estrone in adrenalectomized and ovariectomized rats

Zusammenfassung Die Adjuvans-Arthritis konnte durch Östrontherapie gehemmt werden auf gleiche Weise bei intakten Ratten wie bei Ratten nach bilateraler Adrenalektomie, Ovariektomie oder nach Adrenal- und Ovariektomie. Bei hypophysektomierten Tieren (ohne Östrontherapie) war das Krankheitsbild bedeutend milder als bei intaken Kontrollratten.     

Effect of diabetes on the vertebral column of rats and its modification by estradiol

Summary In vertebrae of genetically selected sucrose-fed diabetic rats a statistically significant bone deficit was found after diabetes had been present for about 8 months. No osteopenia was observed in diabetic rats following treatment with estrogenic hormone for 5–7 months. The development of osseous centers in the end plates of the vertebrae was retarded in diabetic rats, but was about normal in diabetic rats given estrogen.—No differences were noted in the growth zones or in the tendency to develop articular lesions in rats of the various groups. Possible differences in the amount of GAG in intervertebral discs of diabetic and non-diabetic rats respectively await further confirmation.These investigations were aided by grant No. 2 RO1 EYO 1837-03, of the Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Disease, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.We are indebted to Professor Dr J. Secretion of high density lipoprotein by the isolated perfused alcoholic rat liver

Summary Chronic alcohol feeding of a low fat diet for 5 weeks led to a slightly raised though statistically non-significant high density liproprotein cholesterol/apoB containing lipoprotein cholesterol ratio in both the fasting rat serum as well as the secretory products of the isolated perfused liver.Acknowledgments. Effect of spermine on the kinetics of estradiol hydroxylation by rat liver microsomes

Résumé L'addition de spermine au microsomes du foie de rats femelles modifie leK _m du système enzymatique qui transforme 1'estradiol en 2-hydroxyestradiol et aussi en des produits aqueux. La nouvelle valeur resemble à celle qu'ont trouve avec des rats mâles, mais leV _max de la réaction reste inchangé. L'action de la spermine dans ce système est discutée.
