The synthesis of stereoselectively labelled porphobilinogen and its incorporation into protoporphyrin-IX

Summary 11-(R)-²H porphobilinogen, stereospecifically labelled with deuterium in the aminomethylene group has been incorporated into protoporphyrin-IX by haemolysates of chicken erythrocytes. High field NMR spectroscopy confirms that the overall biochemical process is stereospecific, deuterium being retained at the -, -and -meso positions and lost from the -meso position.27 August 1986     

Reduction of high affinity glutamate uptake in rat hippocampus by two polyamine-like toxins isolated from the venom of the predatory waspphilanthus triangulum F

Summary Two components of the venom of the predatory waspPhilanthus triangulum F. significantly reduce — to a greater or less extent — the high affinity uptake of glutamate in rat hippocampus. A concentration of 10 M -PTX caused a reduction of 74%, while the other component, -PTX, at the same concentration, caused a reduction of 18%. Hence the effect of -PTX on high affinity glutamate uptake in the hippocampus is comparable with its effect on high affinity glutamate uptake in insect neuromuscular junctions. Contrary to our previous findings that -PTX has no effect on high affinity glutamate uptake in insect glutamatergic terminal axons, however, -PTX significantly reduces high affinity glutamate uptake in the hippocampus, albeit less effectively than -PTX.     

Synthesis and pharmacological properties of [1-N4-dimethyl-asparagine]-angiotensin II

Summary [1-N⁴-Dimethyl-asparagine]-angiotensin II was synthesized by Merrifield's solid-phase procedure. The analogue gave rat blood pressure about 70% relative potency to Hypertensin (Ciba). Tetrapyrrole biosynthesis from 4,5-dioxovaleric acid inRhodopseudomonas spheroides

Summary Porphyrin biosynthesis from 4,5-dioxovaleric acid was studied in cell suspensions ofR. spheroides. The experiments show that 4,5-dioxovaleric acid is a far precursor of porphyrins through amino laevulinic acid formation in a transamination reaction involving also 1-alanine. It differs radically from the classical aminolaevulinic acid synthesis using glycine and succinyl CoA as substrates.Acknowledgments: The authors are indebted to Dr Rodolfo García for helpful discussions and criticisms. Structure of the porcine thyrotropin receptor: a 200 kilodalton glycoprotein heterocomplex

Summary We have determined that the porcine thyroidal TSH receptor is a glycoprotein heterotetramer composed of two M_r 35,000 () covalently linked subunits which interact noncovalently with two copies of (M_r 66,000) chains.Acknowledgments. The cellular immune response to heat shock proteins

T lymphocytes, which are central to almost every immune response, frequently recognize microbial hsp60. Such cells could provide an early defense mechanism against pathogenic microbes. However, T cells also recognize epitopes of hsp60 shared by microbe and host. Not only conventional / T cells respond to hsp60; / T cells do so, as well. In fact, certain / T cells seem to have a particular preference for this molecule. Recognition of stressed host cells expressing hsp60 could facilitate the scavenger function of the T cell system. On the other hand, such recognition could be involved in autoimmune disease.     

The toxicity of twoBacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxins to gypsy moth larvae is inversely related to the affinity of binding sites on midgut brush border membranes for the toxins

Summary The-endotoxin fromBacillus thuringiensis subspecieskurstaki strain HD1-9 is almost 400 times more potent than the-endotoxin from strain HD-73 as a gypsy moth larvicide. The two-endotoxins compete for a high-affinity binding site on the brush border membrane of larval gypsy moth midguts. The affinity for the-endotoxin from strain HD-73 is much greater than the affinity for the-endotoxin from strain HD1-9.

Changes in mouse liver superoxide dismutase activity and lipid peroxidation during embryonic and postpartum development

Summary In inbred mice possessing high and low tissue superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, it was observed that the difference in the SOD activities of the liver homogenates during development attains the maximum characteristic of the strain by about the 150th day. Subsequently, the SOD activity change displays a tendency in contrast with the age and the basic state. In the course of the development, a difference was also observed between the 2 mouse strains in the lipid peroxidation variation.Part XVIII of the series Properties of enzymes.
