Defensive secretions of Nematinae larvae (Symphyta - Tenthredinidae)

Instar-specific defensive secretions of stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)

Defensive secretions (allomones) from first-instar nymphs of stink bugs in the subfamily Pentatominae contain (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal as a major constituent, whereas this compound is absent from later instars. In contrast, first instars ofEdessa meditabunda (Edessinae) produce allomones like those of later instars. The C₆ and C₈ (E)-4-oxo-2-alkenals are common, characteristic exocrine compounds of nymphal and adult Heteroptera, but (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal is previously unknown as a major natural product for which a biological role has yet to be established.     

Enzymatic characterization of nine endoparasite species of small ermine moths (Yponomeutidae)

Summary Eight hymenopterous and 1 dipterous species, all endoparasitic in eggs, larvae, or pupae of small ermine moths (Yponomeuta) were investigated for their allozyme variation at 3–29 loci. The mean heterozygosity level of the hymenopterous species is one-third of that of the dipterous species. Zymogram patterns of the parasite larvae do not interfere with those of the host.

The power of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) family molecules

Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) and their high-affinity tyrosine kinase VEGF receptors (VEGFRs) are key regulators of both angiogenesis and neurogenesis. Summary 1-O-Monoalkylglycerols with C₁₂ to C₂₀ chains were identified in the scent, gland secretions of the western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox). This is the first documentation of these compounds in the skin secretions of a reptile.

The identification of spiroacetals in the volatile secretions of two species of fruit fly (Dacus dorsalis,Dacus curcurbitae)

Flavonoid profiles of certain species ofRhynchosia of the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae)

Summary A survey of seventy naturally occurring populations ofRhynchosia representing seven species of different subgenera revealed the occurrence of C-glycosides, O-glycosides, prenylated flavonoids and aglycones.Rhynchosia albiflora (R. cyanosperma) differs in gross morphological features and seed coat color and in its flavonoid composition from the other representative species ofRhynchosia.Acknowledgments. HLA BW54 and B5 in Japanese diabetics with juvenile-onset and insulin-dependency (with special reference to the family history)

Summary The frequency of HLA BW54 and B5 in Japanese patients with JOD is increased and decreased, respectively. In JOD patients without a family history of MOD, the frequency of BW54 is significantly increased, whereas in JOD patients with a positive family history the frequency was not increased in a statistically significant manner.

Enzyme immunometric assay for the determination of pregnancy associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) with the antigen as solid phase (conjoint IEMA)

Summary Purified pregnancy associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) can be effectively bound to polystyrene microtitre plates. This immobilized antigen competes with the added serum PAPP-A of unknown concentration for the limited amount of peroxidase-labeled monospecific anti-PAPP-A antibody incubated simultaneously. The sensitivity is 0.2 WHO unit/ml and non-specific binding is 1.0%.Acknowledgments.
