Decrease in motor activity — an early symptom in the course of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE)

Summary Motor activity has been followed in rats during an experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). The disease was produced by transfer of lymph node cells from sensitized syngenic donors. Small and large movements were permanently registered by an electric activity meter. It could be demonstrated that a decrease of the motility is an early symptome of the disease. Therefore the measurement of the motoric activity might be a useful parameter in the classification of EAE.To whom reprint requests should be addressed.Acknowledgments. The effect of bovine myelin basic protein on uptake and release of H3-labelled 5-hydroxytryptamine,L-noradrenalin and γ-aminobutyric acid in rat cortex slices

Summary At concentrations above 10^–5 M myelin basic protein (MBP) induced a small inhibition of the uptake of H³-5HT and H³-NA into rat cortex slices. Release of 5HT, NA and Gaba was not affected by 10^–5 M MBP.Acknowledgment. The authors wish to thank W. Bucher for the preparation of MBP.     

Size ofTrichinella spiralis (nematoda) muscle cysts in the rat,mouse and guinea-pig

Zusammenfassung Bei Ratte, Maus und Meerschweinchen ist die Grösse der Muskelzysten vonTrichinella spiralis 60 Tage nach standardisierter experimenteller Infektion bestimmt worden. Die Grösse der Muskelzysten variierte bei jeder der 3 untersuchten Tierarten erheblich. Bei der Ratte wurden durchschnittlich grössere Muskelzysten vonT. spiralis gefunden als bei der Maus, bei der die Muskelzysten wiederum durchschschnittlich grösser waren als beim Meerschweinchen. Die Zystengrösse vonT. spiralis scheint demnach vom Stoffwechsel der jeweils als Wirt dienenden Tierart abhängig zu sein.     

Evidence of urinary glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antigens excretion in 3 rodents (rat, mouse, and guinea-pig) (author's transl)]

Immunodiffusion technique, with rabbits antibodies against rat glomerular basement membrane (GBM), permits to evidence the presence of GBM antigens into normal urines of 3 rodents (rat, mouse, and guinea-pig). These results confirm the earlier works in human and rabbit urines and show the antigenic communauty existing between the 3 rodents GBM, since we can evidence antigens of 3 different mammals with the same antibody. The origin and the nature of this patterns and the signification of this presence into mammalian urines are discussed.     

Hepatic regeneration in the rat after subtotal (90%) hepatectomy treated with testosterone

A single dose (120 mg/kg IM) of testosterone administered 1 month before subtotal hepatectomy (90%) in Rats, reduced liver steatosis and allowed complete liver regeneration.     

gamma-Glutamyltranspeptidase (GGTP) and cytochrome P-450 after portacaval shunt in the rat.

The increased hepatic activity of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase after portacaval shunt is due to derepression of a fetal enzyme rather than to an induction mechanism.     

Urinary catecholamine metabolites (vanylmandelic and homovanillic acds) in the rat after subchronic treatment with sodium nitrate or nitrite

Summary Sodium nitrate and nitrite in rat food (5 and 0.5% respectively) result in a decrease of both food intake and growth. These agents induce a specific increase in the urinary excretion of 2 catecholamine metabolites: vanylmandelic and homovanillic acids.This work was supported by D. G. R. S. T. grant No. 80. Increase in in vivo (3H) spiperone binding in the rat hippocampal formation and striatum after repeated treatment with haloperidol

Summary An increase in in vivo (³H) spiperone binding was observed in rat hippocampal formation and striatum after repeated treatment with haloperidol. This suggests that in hippocampus as well as in striatum prolonged blockade of dopaminergic transmission by a neuroleptic agent results in the development of a supersensitivity of the dopamine receptors.Acknowledgments. Histochemical and cytochemical observations on the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) localization in the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) after preganglionic sympathectomy of the neonatal rat

Summary Results of histochemical and cytochemical reactions show that after the section of preganglionic nerve trunk performed in newborn animals, the appearance and the individual increase in AChE activity in non-innervated nerve cells follow the pattern of normally innervated ganglion cell.

Liver homing in the rat of111Indium labelled beef and neuraminidase-treated rat erythrocytes (Studies with a Gamma Camera)

Summary The rate of liver homing of¹¹¹In-labelled erythrocytes has been measured under a Gamma Camera. Homing of neuraminidase-treated or xenogeneic erythrocytes is delayed by preinjection of glycolipids or glycopeptides.We thank Miss Unverhau for excellent technical assistance.     

Molting and vitellogenesis in Orchestia gammarella Pallas (crustacea amphipoda): study of the female-specific protein synthesis after ecdysterone administration (author's transl)]

Ecdysterone, administered to Orchestia gammarella females (200 mug/g), has no positive effect on the female-specific protein synthesis and vitellogenesis.
