Induction of dolykaryocytes by vesicular stomatitis virus in XC rat cells]

V.S.V. induced polycaryocytes in rat embryonic fibroblasts, transformed by the Prague strain of Sarcoma Rous (XC cells). This fusion is strictly dependent on the expression of the viral genome and is probably due to the incorporation of viral antigens in the cell membrane. The integrity of cellular RNA synthesis is however not required. The fusion is probably due to a membrane structure characteristic of these transformed cells.     

Induction of hemopoietic chimerism in the caprine fetus by intraperitoneal injection of fetal liver cells

Summary Intraperitoneal injection of allogeneic liver cells from 43-day-old male fetuses into normal 60-day female goat fetuses resulted in persistent hemopoietic chimerism in surviving recipients without clinical evidence of graft-versus-host disease. Transplantation of normal fetal liver cells into preimmunocompetent goat fetuses affected with -D-mannosidosis may provide an alternative strategy for evaluating hemopoietic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of human lysosomal storage diseases.

Effect of sodium butyrate on the interferon sensitivity of normal or cells transformed by murine sarcoma virus]

Sodium butyrate enhances the sensitivity of MSV transformed murine cells to interferon, but does not influence the response of normal cells. Sodium butyrate might act in transformed cells by restoring the different elements of the cytoskeletal system.     

Induction of the mesoderm and primordial germ cells by the endoderm of Pleurodeles waltlii (Amphibia, Urodele): development during gastrulation]

Blastulae ectoderm is combined with dorsal or ventral endoderm from blastulae, gastrulae and early neurulae. In vitro culture reveals the presence of different mesodermal structures whose nature is connected with the endoderm origin site. Primordial germ cells differentiate essentially in the recombinates including ventral endoderm. The inducing capacity of this latter concerning germ cells is maximum at the beginning of gastrulation, then decreases during it and finally disappears at the onset of neurulation.     

Induction, by 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine, of a "foamy" virus previously undetected in hamster cells transformed by SV40]

TSV5 clone 2 cells in normal conditions of culture contain only an expressed RNA virus (R-type virus). However, exposure of the cells to 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine with dexamethasone, induced synthesis of a syncitium-forming ("Foamy") virus. In other hamster cell lines, the same treatment fails to induce a "foamy" virus. The origin of this "foamy" virus is discussed.     

Production of passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) and reversed PCA by rat IgE antibody in the mouse

Although IgE antibody is generally characterized as a homocytotropic antibody, it has been well known for some time that mouse IgE antibody causes potent sensitization of rat skin for PCA. The present study clearly shows the reciprocal cross-sensitization of mouse skin with rat IgE molecules. PCA and RPCA were produced by rat IgE antibody in an inbred mouse strain. DS/Shi, though not in C3H/HeShi, C57BL/6JShi and BALB/cCrj strains. Sensitization of DS/Shi mouse skin for PCA with rat IgE antibody was comparable in sensitivity with that of rat skin, but lasted only for a short term in comparison with the long persistence in rat skin.

Molt induction in lobsters (Homarus americanus) by intramuscular injection of ecdysterone triacetate

Summary The principal component of the successful, molt-inducing ecdysterone acetate mixture was established as ecdysterone triacetate and shown to have the same activity as the acetate mixture. The triacetate induced ecdysis in male lobsters collected in winter and summer and in female lobsters collected in winter. Intramuscular injections of triacetate in ethanol were as effective as those with oil emulsions.We thank Dr A. G. McInnes and D. Smith of the Atlantic Regional Laboratory, N. R. C., Halifax for obtaining the NMR-spectrum.     

Induction of chromosome aberrations and chlorophyll mutations in plants by methylisocyanate (MIC) gas

Summary Seeds ofSolanum surattense Burm. f. collected from areas of Bhopal (India) affected by methylisocyanate gas showed chromosome aberrations in root cells, and growth retardation and chlorophyll mutation of seedlings, the frequencies of which varied from one locality to another.     

In vitro evaluation of cutaneous potentials in the triton, Pleurodeles waltlii Michah., by measuring transepithelial potentials]

Surface potentials previously measured in vivo have been approximately evaluated in vitro by means of an experimental device allowing a simultaneous record of transepithelial potential differences in 2 areas of the same skin piece cut out along the proximo-distal direction of the anterior limb of Pleurodeles waltlii. These potentials are thus explained by unequal transepithelial potential differences in the proximal and distal areas of the same skin sample.     

Cure of osteopetrosis by allogenic bone marrow injection in the double mutant "osteopetrosi-athymic" rat]

The cure of osteopetrosis by allogenic bone marrow injection has been obtained in homozygous rats for both mutations, osteopetrosis (op) and athymic nude (rnu). This new animal model will help in studying the eventual relationship between the bone resorption process and the immunological reconstitution.     

Influence of an injection of chorionic hormone (HCG) on the accumulation of testicular fluid following ligature of the vas deferens in adult Wistar rats]

Using the weight gain of the testis after efferent duct ligation, we have measured the testis fluid secretion. A single injection of HCG to Rats before, at the time or after the ligation leads to three types of effects: no effect which can be explained by the metabolisation of the hormone: a positive and/or a negative one. If the stimulating action of HCG remains unexplained, it must be related with ether anaesthesia. It seems likely that the decrease of testicular fluid secretion may represent the fundamental action of HCG upon the exocrine function of the testis, but the mecanism by which this action occurs remains to be solved.     

Satellite RNA (RNA3) of tomato black ring virus is found with one of the 2 major RNAs (RNA2) in a new capsid nucleoprotein]

Tomato Black Ring Virus (TBRV) like other NEPOviruses posseses two nucleoproteins M and B and two major RNAs, RNA1 and RNA2 respectively distributed in B and M. A new nucleoprotein has just been discovered and comprises one molecule of RNA2 associated with one molecule of RNA3. RNA3 is a small RNA of molecular weight 500,000 d considered to be a satellite RNA. Its level appears to depend on the infection stage, local or systemic. RNA3 is able to modify the relative proportions of nucleoproteins M and B and their respective RNAs. The satellite RNA, might be part of the genome and represent a monocistronic mRNA for protein capsid synthesis. However it seems perhaps more tempting to correlate TBRV-RNA3 with satellite RNA5 of certain strains of Cucumber mosaic virus.
