The non-exponential decay pattern of the weak luminescence from seedling ofCicer arietinum L. stimulated by pulsating electric fields

Our experiments have shown that the response of etiolated seedlings ofCicer arietinum L. to an externally applied pulsating electric field involves a weak luminescence, the intensity of which follows a non-exponential decay pattern.Acknowledgment. Elimination kinetics of iopamidol,a new water soluble nonionic radiographic contrast medium,analyzed by radioactivation

Summary We have studied the elimination kinetics of iopamidol employing radioactivation and radiochemical separation. This method offers the advantage of guaranteeing absolutely no interference by radiation with tissue distribution or elimination kinetics of the analyzed compound. Our results show that iopamidol does not cross the blood-brain barrier, has no effect on thyroid iodine uptake and does not accumulate in the liver.Acknowledgments. Hydrophobic properties of model compounds with peptide-like chemical environment: N-acetyl-N′-methyl-amino acid amides

Summary Capacity factors in reversed-phase HPLC and distribution constants in octan-l-ol/water of N-acetyl-N-methylamino acid amides have been measured as a function of temperature. The HPLC capacity factors are proposed as estimates of the hydrophobicity of the amino acid side chains.We acknowledge the interest in this work of Dr H. van Rooy, Dr J. Kinkel, Prof. W. C-banding pattern on the chromosomes of the Japanese house shrew,Suncus murinus riukiuanus,and its implication

Summary The C-band on the chromosomes of the Japanese house shrew,Suncus murinus riukiuanus (Insectivora), was studied. Various types of C-banding pattern were found in the genome of this subspecies. On the contribution of haemolymph to the salivary proteins of the red cotton bug,Dysdercus koenigii F. (Heteroptera,Pyrrhocoridae)

Summary Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of haemolymph and the salivary gland of adult maleDysdercus koenigii has been carried out. The presence of common bands in the electropherograms of the salivary gland and haemolymph shows the possible elaboration of haemolymph protein into the salivary glands as also evidenced by leucomethylene blue incorporation into the salivary gland lobules. Methionine enkephalin inhibits the bursting activity of the Br-type neuron inHelix pomatia L.

Summary The present study demonstrates that methionine enkephalin can inhibit the normal bursting activity pattern of the RPal or Br-type neuron and this inhibition can be blocked by prior treatment with naloxone, the selective opiate antagonist. The study demonstrates indirectly the presence of opiate-like receptors inHelix pomatia.Acknowledgments. Genetic control and modifications of peroxidase pattern in two species ofNicotiana and their interspecific hybrid

Summary The peroxidase patterns ofNicotiana suaveolens, N. glutinosa and their interspecific hybrid have been studied, and their possible genetic control analyzed. Genetische und biochemische Untersuchungen über die Bedeutung der Amino- und Nucleinsäuren im Ursachengefüge von Neoplasmen (Tumoren und Gallen). Ein Dauermodifikationsbzw. Prädeterminationsphänomen

Summary If certain hybrids ofPlatypoecilus maculatus andXiphophorus helleri (viviparous platyfish and swordtails) are cultivated in diluted sea-water (0.25 or 0.5% salt concentration), the amount of free amino acids increases and the growth of macromelanophores, which normally only form certain black spots at the dorsal fin, is accelerated. Therefore melanomas arise. After changing salt water for fresh water, growth of macromelanophores remains accelerated. The same effect is seen in progenies which have been in an oocytic or embryonic state, when their mother was cultivated for some weeks in diluted sea-water (Figures 1 and 2). A similar effect has been observed in plant galls produced byPhylloxera (Viteus vitifolii) in the genusVitis. When the parasite, which injects amino acids into the tissue of the host in order to produce galls, is removed, gall formation goes on slowly for some days. It is shown that a few hours after injection of amino acids—before formation of neoplasms begins—the concentration of ribonucleic acids is increased. RNS-(and therefore protein-)biosynthesis in neoplasms may be dependent on concentration of free amino acids. A simple concept for the formation of neoplasms in hybrids of platyfish and galls ofPhylloxera is discussed.

Myosin isoenzymes during in vivo and in vitro differentiation of chick muscles

Muscle fibers differentiated, in vitro, from myoblasts of embryonic Pectoralis (presumptive fast) and embryonic Adductor magnus (presumptive slow) muscles synthesise the same type of myosin, which is identical to the type synthesised in day 10 embryonic muscles. This type of myosin comigrates with the third isozyme of the adult fast-twitch muscle. There is no change in the kind of myosin in cultures aged from 2 to 7 weeks, whereas during the in vivo differentiation of the same muscles, new isozymes appear which are different in the two muscles. With regard to myosin, the muscle fibers differentiated, in vitro, from myoblasts of fast or slow muscles expressed the same phenotype.     

The identification of norlobariol,a new lichen constituent fromXanthoparmelia scabrosa (Tayl.) Hale

Summary Norlobariol (I) previously described as a synthetic product derived from norlobaridone (II) was isolated as a new metabolite fromXanthoparmelia scabrosa (Tayl.) Hale.Acknowledgment. Presence of intrachromatidic bands in mitotic chromosomes ofTriturus marmoratus (Amphibia: Caudata)

Summary The C-banding technique has revealed the existence of single and double intrachromatidic bands in mitotic chromosomes ofTriturus marmoratus. The presence of the bands is discussed on the basis of the helical coil model versus the radial loop model, which assumes a different packing of the DNA fiber.We are very indebted to Prof. C. Ecdysteroids inLimulus larvae

Summary Free ecdysteroids were extracted from intermolt and premolt larvae ofLimulus polyphemus in the first posthatch stage, purified by TLC and HRLC, and assayed by RIA and theLimulus bioassay 20-hydroxyecdysone appears to be a principal ecdysteroid and occurs at least 3 times higher a concentration in premolt vs intermolt animals.Supported by NSF grant GB-40620.Acknowledgments. Reversion of virus N-1 resistant mutant of blue-green algaNostoc muscorum

Summary The reversion of N-1 virus resistant strain of the algaNostoc muscorum was studied by inoculating parent virus in the resistant culture at various incubations. A fraction of virus resistant cells reverted to wild sensitive type with the reversion rate of 3.99×10^–6/cell/generation.We gratefully acknowledge Dr H.K. Pande and Dr S. A blocked mutant ofClaviceps purpurea accumulating chanoclavine-I-aldehyde

Summary An alkaloid-blocked mutant ofClaviceps purpurea was isolated from a strain which produces ergotoxine alkaloids. The mutant accumulates chanoclavine-I and the corresponding aldehyde. It lacks the ability to form tetracyclic ergolines.Dedicated to Prof. Dr Dr h.c. K. Mothes on the occasion of his eightieth birthday.     

A high number of chromosomes in the hillstream cyprinid,Tor putitora (Pisces)

Summary The karyotype of a cyprinid fish occurring in India,Tor putitora is described. The diploid complement comprises 100 chromosomes. The modal number in this family being 2n=50,T. putitora appears to be another case of tetraploidy.The author is highly indebted to Prof. G.K. Manna, and Prof. A.K. Effect of ethanol and isopropanol on the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase,viability and life-span inDrosophila melanogaster andDrosophila funebris

Summary The effects caused by the addition of 2 alcohols to the culture medium of 2 species ofDrosophila, D. melanogaster andD. funebris, are compared. Ethanol at 1% concentration causes slight and tolerable changes in both species. 1% isopropanol is lethal in 1 species and causes drastic changes in the other.The author acknowledge Dr A.
