Summary Eight waxwings,Bombycilla garrulus, were fed exclusively with vegetable food for periods of 10–18 days. In contrast to other song birds, they maintained or increased body weight during that time, or reduced it only moderately. Thus the waxwing is a feeding specialist which can subsist at least temporarily on a totally vegetable diet.

Summary Emericid is a new polyether polycyclic ionophore antibiotic excreted byStreptomyces hygroscopicus (DS 24 367). Active in vitro against Gram-positive bacteria, it is ineffective in vivo. At a 0.006–0.02% level in the diet it protects chickens and rabbits against coccidiosis.From a recent paper byN. Summary JH III is the only JH detected by GLC-MS in medium from in vitro incubations of corpora allata of adult females ofCalliphora vomitoria. When corpora allata were removed from females at various times during the reproductive cycle and the JH III produced by the glands in vitro measured by a JH III radioimmunoassay, an increase in the level of synthesis was found to occur before previtellogenesis (0–24 h). A second increase appeared at the onset of vitellogenesis (72–83 h) and continued until the end of vitellogenesis (96 h) and the occurrence of chorionation (120 h). Since sexual receptivity develops with vitellogenesis, the significantly higher levels of JH III biosynthesis in vitro at this time supports a possible role for JH in the acquisitive of receptivity.  相似文献

Summary Scabies and demodicosis of dogs as well as phthiriasis of pigs, dogs, and cattle may be cured by peroral application of contact poisons (di-trichlorphenyl-dichlorpropanon and bis-parachlorphenyl-trichlorbutan). Dose 0,1–0,2 g/kg body-weight during 2–4 days. In case of demodicosis the cure must be repeated 1–2 times in short intervalls. On peroral application the drugs may be detected within a few hours in the milk, fæces, and urine. The milk of the cow contains the drug during 7 to 8 days after peroral medication.  相似文献

Summary ATPases of the amine storing granules from bovine adrenal medulla and splenic nerves are inhibited by Tl+++ 3×10–5 and 5×10–6 M, respectively. Tl+ up to 10–3 M is ineffective. By T1+++ in concentrations of 10–4 M or more, proteins are precipitated, so that the enzyme inhibiton by these concentrations is unspecific. If T1+ is oxidized to Tl+++ in the organism, the inhibition of granular ATPase may be responsible for the alterations of the catecholamine metabolism observed in thallium intoxication.  相似文献

Summary A characteristic and reproducible sign of narcotic withdrawal is the naloxone induced increase in arterial pressure. In morphine-dependent rats allowed to undergo spontaneous withdrawal (6–24 h) and then transected at the spinal C-1 level, arterial pressure was maintained at a significantly higher level than either spinal-transected nondependent controls or morphine-dependent, spinal-transected rats pithed from C-1 to L-4. These findings indicate that the morphine-dependent spinal cord, independent of supraspinal influences, is able to exhibit an autonomic component of spontaneous withdrawal.This study was supported by the Medical Research Service of the Veterans Administration. Summary IAA oxidase activity increased concomitant with root initiation during 16–52 h, in all cultures, thus showing the necessity of an active IAA oxidase for root initiation inPhaseolus mungo hypocotyl cuttings. The increase being very sharp in IAA alone, but less in all other cultures. The role of sucrose in root initiation via IAA oxidase activity has been discussed.The research has been partly financed by a grant from the US Department of Agriculture. Summary Cultures ofPhysarum polycephalum incubated with caffeine or theophylline for over 100 min prior to mitosis exhibited mitotic delay proportional to the time of treatment before 100 min. Starved cultures exhibited mitotic delay at times of starvation longer than 180 min and slight stimulation from 100–180 min. Dibutyryl cAMP appeared to accelerate reconstruction of the nucleus following mitosis.Acknowledgments. Zusammenfassung Zu dem wichtigsten Arbeitsgebiet der Kohlenstoffbiologischen Forschungsstation e.V., Essen, gehört die Massenzucht von Algen. Von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung ist dabei die in bestimmten Zeitabschnitten, zum Beispiel Tagen oder Wochen, zu erreichende Zunahme an organischer Trockensubstanz. In Verbindung mit diesen Arbeiten erschien es reizvoll, der Frage nachzugehen, wie es sich mit der Zunahme organischer Substanz je Zeiteinheit bei den verschiedenen Lebewesen — einerseits Tieren und Pflanzen, andererseits Vielzellern und Mikroorganismen — verhalte, insbesondere, welche minimale Zeitspanne in der Praxis nötig ist, um eine Verdopplung der zu Beginn der Beobachtungen vorhandenen organischen Substanz zu erhalten.Als Messzahlen werden Verdopplungsschritte (DS) = doubling step angewandt. Für kurze Zeitspannen wurden folgende « Spitzenleistungen » (aus der Literatur) ermittelt:Bienen-Maden von 0,1 auf 157,6 mg = 10,67 DS in 4 1/2-5 Tagen; Bacterium coli 1 DS in 16,4 min.;Zuckerrüben 3,4 DS in 1 Woche.In dem Aufsatz werden weitere, sich bei dem Thema aufdrängende Probleme behandelt, so die Zunahme von Populationen im begrenzten Lebensraum, zum Beispiel beiDrosphila, die Frage, ob etwa die gesamte lebende Substanz auf Erden gegenüber der anorganischen Materie eine zunehmende Tendenz zeige und weitere Zusammenhänge.  相似文献

Nuclei were isolated from protoplasts of a haploid auxotrophicAspergillus nidulans strain. Transformation of protoplasts prepared from a complementary haploid auxotrophic strain with these purified nuclei resulted in both heterokaryotic and diploid colonies. Summary The auditory communication of crickets provides a model system for the analysis of the neuronal mechanisms underlying complex behavior. The song of male crickets attracts females. The necessary and sufficient parameter of the song for the female phonotaxis has been determined by a quantified behavioral analysis. Neuronal correlates of this pattern recognition exist in the cricket brain and give rise to a hypothesis on the mechanism of song pattern recognition. Causal relationships between the orientation of a cricket during phonotaxis and the activity of single identified neurons were found by monitoring and deactivating single neurons during behavior. The different roles of various identifield neurons for sound localization have been tested by this method. The plasticity of the auditory system at both the behavioral and at the neuronal level has been studied after ampytation of one ear, and a mechanism for sound localization with only one ear is proposed.  相似文献

Summary Titers of ecdysone, 20-hydroxyecdysone and juvenile hormone III were measured in whole body extracts or hemolymph of embryos, first, penultimate and last stadium nymphs, and adult females ofNaupoheta cinerea. We used a gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry method for quantifying juvenile hormone and a radio-immunoassay for ecdysteroid determination. Juvenile hormone III is particularly abundant in the embryonic stage (up to 960 ng/g), at a low level in first and penultimate stadium nymphs (2–10 ng/ml) and almost absent in the last nymphal stadium; in the adult female the juvenile hormone titer rises to 180 ng/ml in hemolymph during rapid oocyte growth. The titers of ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone undergo similar fluctuations in the embryonic and nymphal stages, being highest at the time of cuticle formation in the embryo and a few days before the nymphal and adult molts (around 100–200 ng/ml for exdysone and 2–4 g/ml for 20-hydroxyecdysone).Acknowledgments. Summary In isolated, electrically driven, left guineapig atria, theophylline (5×10–4 g/ml) increased the rate of45Ca uptake and release without affecting the total myocardial Ca content and the amount of exchangeable cellular Ca. In sheep and calf heart preparations, theophylline (10–4–10–3 g/ml) increased Ca inward current during excitation (as examined indirectly by Ca dependent changes of membrane potential in TTX-containing solutions) as well as tension development. It is concluded that the positive inotropic effect of theophylline in mammalian hearts is due to an increase in Ca influx during the excitation process.

Summary Euphorbia lathyris, a plant which has been proposed as an energy farm candidate yields a total of 35% of its dry weight as simple organic extractables. Chemical analyses of the extracts show that 5% of the dry weight is a mixture of reduced terpenoids, in the form of triterpenoids, and 20% of the dry weight is simple sugars in the form of hexoses. The terpenoids can be converted to a gasoline-like substance and the sugars can be fermented to alcohol. Based on a biomass yield of about 25 dry tons ha–1 year–1, the total energy that can be obtained from this plant in the form of liquid fuels is 48 MJ ha–1 year–1, 26 MJ in the form of hydrocarbons and 22 MJ in the form of ethanol. A conceptual process study for the large scale recovery ofEuphorbia lathyris products indicates that this crop is a net energy producer. Several lines of investigation have been started to increase the hydrocarbon yield of this plant. Tissue cultures ofE. lathyris have been established and will be used for selection, with the aim of regenerating a superior plant. Biochemical studies have been initiated to elucidate regulation of terpenoid metabolism.
