Effect of dibutyryl cyclic AMP on cerebral energy charge and electrocorticographic activity in rats under asphyxic hypoxia]

In Rats anesthetized with pentobarbital and submitted to brief asphyxic episodes, intracerebroventricular administration of dibutyryl cyclic AMP inhibits the decrease of energy charge, delays the disappearance of electrocorticographic activity (E Co G) and shortens the recovery time of E Co G.     

The sedative effects of nicotinamide on gerbil wheel-running activity

Summary The activity of 5 groups of gerbils was monitored over 22 days. 3 of the groups received daily injections of nicotinamide (125, 250 or 500 mg/kg) and a 4th group received saline. The 5th group was untreated. The results indicated that both the 250 and 500 mg/kg nicotinamide administrations greatly reduced the activity levels of the gerbils.This work was supported in part by Faculty Research Grant No. 82-6209 from the University of Alabama in Birmingham to J.M.B.

Relationships between reserpine induced phasic EEG activity and single unit discharge in the pontine reticular formation and lateral geniculate body neurons

Résumé Des ondes rapides sont enregistrées dans la formation réticulée pontique (FRP) et le corps géniculé latéral (CGL) chez des chats sous Reserpine. Au moment des ondes rapides, l'activité des neurones de la FRP est généralement inhibée, parfois augmentée. Elle est toujours augmentée dans le CGL. Un rapprochement est tenté avec des phénomènes semblables observés pendant le sommeil paradoxal.     

The effects of reticular stimulation on digastric reflex activity during sleep and wakefulness

Résumé La stimulation électrique de la formation réticulaire mésencéphalique fut appliquée 0–20 msec avant l'induction du réflexe digastrique chez des chats libres. Le reflexe digastrique fut induit par stimulation électrique du nerf dentaire inférieur. La stimulation réticulaire eut pour résultat l'inhibition de ce réflexe pendant la veille, le sommeil tranquille et le sommeil actif.     

The inhibitory effects of anti-androgen (SH-714) on erythropoietic activity

Zusammenfassung Der erythropoietische stimulierende Effekt von Depo-Testosteron-Zyklopentylpropionat in plethorischen Mäusen kann durch ein neues Antiandrogenpräparat (Cyproteronazetat — SH-714) verhindert werden. Dasselbe Präparat verhindert in plethorischen Mäusen ebenfalls die nach einer Standarddosis von Erythropoietin erwartete Blutneubildung.     

Inhibition of erythrocyte ATPase activity by aclacinomycin and reverse effects of ascorbate on ATPase activity

We studied the effect of aclacinomycin on human erythrocyte membrane enzymes. Aclacinomycin inhibited ATPase, including Na-K-dependent ATPase, ouabain insensitive ATPase and Ca-ATPase. However acetylcholinesterase was not inhibited by aclacinomycin. The ATPase activities were not inhibited by aclacinomycin if ascorbate was added to the incubation mixture. However other reducing agents, alpha-tocopherol, superoxide dismutase and catalase had no effect on ATPase activity. Ascorbate may protect membrane proteins and lipids from peroxidate damage.     

The effects of salicylate and aspirin on the activity of phosphorylase a in perfused hearts of rats

Summary Sodium salicylate and aspirin are known to have a glycogenolytic effect as judged by either the glycogen level or lactate production in perfused hearts of rats. In this work it was possible to demonstrate that phosphorylase a level was increased in the hearts subjected to the action of these drugs.     

The short-term effects of a single dose of erythropoietin upon reticulocytes in starved rats

Zusammenfassung Nach einer Injektion von Erythropoietin in hungernde Ratten beobachteten wir eine Erhöhung der Reticulocyten. Junge Formen von Reticulocyten erschienen bereits 12 h nach der Behandlung. Dieser Befund deutet vielleicht darauf hin, dass Erythropoietin nicht nur die Stammzellen angreift.

The effects of chronic doses of an organophosphorus inhibitor on cholinesterase activity in boll weevils

Zusammenfassung Bei Imagines vonAnthonomus grandis Boheman die kontinuierlich mit nahezu letaler und letaler Dosis phosphororganischer Insektizide gefüttert wurden, konnte eine befristete zunehmende Hemmung der Cholinesteraseaktivit?t beobachtet werden. Trotzdem die Behandlung nicht unterbrochen wurde, gewann das Enzym die fast normale Wirksamkeit wieder zurück.      

The effect of vinblastin and vincristin on single nerve fibres

Summary The perfusion of the node of Ranvier with vinblastin or vincristin reduces the amplitude of the action potential within a few seconds. Vincristins is 10fold more active than vinblastin. Upon withdrawal, the effect is promptly reversible and it is antagonized by acetylcholine.     

Reflex activity of single preganglionic sympathetic fibres during coronary occlusion

Résumé La décharge de fibres sympathiques préganglionnaires isolées, faisant probablement partie de l'innervation efférente du cur, a été étudiée sur des chats, soit anésthésiés, soit décérébrés, soit spinalisés, par rapport à l'occlusion d'un segment de l'artère coronaire de gauche.

Retention of topical liposomal formulations on the cornea

The ability of liposomes composed of different kinds of phospholipid materials to adhere to the surface of the cornea was studied in the rabbit. The liposomes were labelled with tracer amounts of an I125-labelled phosphatidylethanolamine derivative and were instilled in 10 microliters drops onto the cornea. The retention of radioactivity was monitored. The results show that liposomes containing positively charged phospholipids are better retained than an albumin control. Thus, it may be possible to develop a drug delivery liposome system which would permit long-term sustained release of ophthalmic drugs onto the cornea.

Zusammenfassung Nachweis, dass Nitrosarcosin im Gegensatz zu Dimethyl- und Dibutylnitrosamin die nichtfunktionelle Oxidase in der Mäuseleber hemmt.

Both thermal and nociceptive afferents influence the unit activity of the neurons in the corpus striatum

Summary Both thermal and nociceptive stimulation in the periphery were shown to influence the neuronal activity recorded in the striatal area.
