Antidiuretic hormone concentration in blood perfusing the adenohypophysis

Zusammenfassung Der antidiuretische Hormon-(ADH, Vasopressin) Gehalt des die Adenohypophyse durchströmenden Blutes wird für die Ruhephase mit 6 mU/ml und nach schwerem Blutverlust mit 2 U/ml berechnet. Die bisher allgemein vertretene Auffassung, nach welcher das ADH in einer für die normale Stimulation der adenohypophysären Sekretion des ACTH ungenügenden Konzentration vorhanden ist, kann nicht aufrechterhalten bleiben.     

The involvement of cyclic 3′, 5′-adenosine monophosphate in the growth hormone release mechanism (s)

Riassunto II 3', 5'-AMP dibutirrato (5 g) iniettato nel ventricolo laterale del cervello di ratto, provoca una spiccata liberazione deH'ormone somatotropo soltanto in animali pretrattati con teofillina (50 mg/kg s.c). La teofillina per via s.c. (50 mg/kg) si dimostra inattiva, ma libera ormone somatotropo quando e iniettata per via endoventricolare (5 g). Uno stimolo usualmente incapace di liberare somatotropo (formalina) provoca deplezione dell'ormone dall'ipofisi in ratti pretrattati s.c. con teofillina. I risultati sono in favore di una partecipazione del 3', 5-AMP nel meccanismo di liberazione di ormone somatotropo.

Distribution of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) and somatostatin in the skin of the green frog (Rana esculenta)]

High concentrations of Thyrotrophin-Releasing Hormone (TRH) have been found in the dorsal skin of the Frog Rana esculenta, lower levels being measured in the ventral skin. alpha-MSH and somatostatin were undetectable in these tissues. Nor was TRH detected in the blood of these animals. The concentration of somatostatin in the pancreas was similar to that of the hypothalamus and twice or one hundred times higher than in the intestine or stomach respectively.     

Antidiuretic effects of oxytocin in the Brattleboro rat

The antidiuretic activity of oxytocin (OT) was measured in Brattleboro rats with congenital diabetes insipidus. A dose dependent antidiuretic response was found in animals receiving chronic infusions of 0.1 micrograms/h, 1.0 micrograms/h, and 5 micrograms/h of OT. OT infused at the rate of 5 micrograms/h over a 7-day period completely reversed the symptoms of diabetes insipidus. The results support the concept that OT serves as a weak agonist of vasopressin at the level of the kidney and at pharmacological levels exhibits antidiuretic activity.

Differences in luteinizing hormone release stimulated in rat anterior pituitary cells by leukotriene C4 and by gonadotropin-releasing hormone in vitro

Continuous administration of leukotriene C4 (LTC4, 10(-10) M) to superfused rat anterior pituitary cells increased LH release for 40 min only, whereas in a parallel experiment gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH, 10(-9) M) evoked a continuous increase in hormone secretion. In contrast to GnRH, LTC4 did not desensitize rat anterior pituitary cells. The secretory action resulting from the administration of LTC4 (10(-10) M) was abolished for 40 min after previous stimulation. The results documented the dual action of LTC4 on LH exocytosis.

Inhibition of TSH-stimulated thyroid hormone release and potentiation of TRH-stimulated TSH release by indomethacin in perifusion systems of rat thyroids and pituitaries

Summary Using indomethacin (Ind), a prostaglandin, synthesis inhibitor, in vivo experiments in rats and in vitro experiments with perifusion systems of rat thyroids and pituitaries were conducted. After 35 days of intragastric infusion of Ind, serum TSH levels were markedly increased, the thyroid was swollen and, as a consequence, T₃ and T₄ levels were normal. The T₃ release from perifused rat thyroids under continuous stimulation with 10 mU/ml TSH was inhibited significantly (p<0.01) by 1.0×10^–6 M Ind. On the other hand, the TSH release from perifused rat pituitaries under TRH stimulation was enhanced conspicuously by Ind. It was concluded that Ind decelerated thyroid hormone release from the thyroid and accelerated TSH release from the pituitary in perifusion systems.

On the other hand, the TSH release from perifused rat pituitaries under TRH stimulation was enhanced conspicuously by Ind. It was concluded that Ind decelerated thyroid hormone release from the thyroid and accelerated TSH release from the pituitary in perifusion systems.     

Somatostatin inhibits in vitro release of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone from rat mediobasal hypothalamic slices

Summary Somatostatin, in concentrations ranging from 10^–10 M to 10^–7 M, induces a dose-dependent inhibition of LHRH release from mediobasal hypothalamic slices incubated in vitro. In contrast, VIP, secretin, glucagon, substance P, neurotensin and arginine-vasotocin do not affect spontaneous release of LHRH.     

Differences in the stimulation by calcium ionophore of juvenile hormone III release from corpora allata of solitarious and gregariousLocusta migratoria

Summary Incubation of the calcium ionophore A23187 resulted in an increase in the median rate of juvenile hormone III release by corpora allata (CA) of both gregarious and solitarious adultLocusta migratoria females at 3, 5 and 8 days after fledging. At all 3 datapoints, the enhancement of release rates was highly significant for CA from gregarious females but not significant for CA from solitarious females.     

Effect of thyroid hormone on somatomedin-C release from perfused rat liver

The effect of thyroid hormone on plasma somatomedin-C (SmC) level and on SmC release from perfused rat liver was investigated. Plasma SmC levels and liver tissue SmC were significantly increased in thyroxine-treated rats. Physiological doses of triiodothyronine increased SmC release and SmC concentration in the perfused rat liver. These results indicate that thyroid hormone directly enhances the synthesis and release of SmC in the rat.     

Antidiuretic and thermogenic effects of intracerebroventricular prostaglandin H2 in ethanol-anaesthetized rats

Summary When PGH₂ was administered intracerebroventricularly at doses of 5 and 15 nmoles in ethanol-anaesthetized rats, alcohol diuresis was inhibited and rectal temperature, blood pressure and heart rate were all significantly increased.     

Acceleration of crypt cell proliferation by acoustic stimuli

Summary Cell proliferation rates in the bases of the crypts of Lieberkuhn in the jejunum of rat were measured using a stathmokinetic technique. In rats subjected to recurring loud noise cell proliferation was more rapid than in rats not subjected to the noise.
