Summary The exogeneous application of cobalt induces the differentiation of membrane complexes of the endoplasmic reticulum. After longer acting of cobalt these membranes are dilated and later destroyed. This fact can manifest itself also in some disturbances of the cell division.

Zusammenfassung Der Einfluss verschiedener Wasserextrakte aus Flechten auf Chromosomenstruktur und Zellteilung an Bohnenwurzeln und Zellkulturen des chinesischen Hamsters wurde untersucht. Es kam zu keinen Chromosomenaberrationen. Einzig der Extract vonNephroma arcticum hatte in schwacher Konzentration einen hemmenden Einfluss auf den Mitoseverlauf. Diese mitosehemmende Wirkung könnte die Ursache sein, dassNephroma arcticum das Wachstum vieler holzzerstörender Pilze hemmt.

Résumé Les auteurs étudient les différences quantitatives et qualitatives de l'effet du suxamethonium sur la fonction cardiaque chez des chevaux concients et des chevaux soumis à une anesthésie générale. Ils ont aussi contrôlé l'efficacité du propranolol, agent d'arrêt de transmission-adrénergique, empêchant tout changement dans les fonctions du cur.     

Histopathological effect of thiourea on the ovarian tissues of Sarcophaga ruficornis (Fabr.).

The primary target of thiourea in female Sarcophaga are the follicles in the ovarioles. The follicle cells as a result become syncytial and their nuclei get pycnotic, inhibiting the transport of nutrient material into the nurse cells and of yolk into the oocytes. The subnormal eggs produced are not viable.

Zusammenfassung Es wurde die Rolle von Cystein und Glutathion als Schutzmittel für Enzym-Sulfhydrylgruppen studiert. Zyklische Photophosphorylierung, durch PMS katalysiert und durch Herbizid Ioxynil gehemmt, kann durch Zugabe von 10M Cystein oder Glutathion wieder teilweise bis ständig hergestellt werden. Es wird eine Hypothese aufgestellt, wonach der Hemmungsmechanismus auf einer Radikal-Reaktion beruhe.

Riassunto In una popolazione italiana diRattus rattus L. è stato messo in evidenza un cariotipo a 38 cromosomi; la differenza nel numero diploide rispetto a quanto noto per altre popolazioni della stessa specie è dovuta a due fusioni centriche in condizione omozigote. Il confronto con i cariotipi forniti da altri autori per la specieRattus rattus ci fa proporre anche per questa specie di Roditori la presenza di un fenomeno di polimorfismo cromosomico.     

The influence of the thymus on radiogold clearance

Zusammenfassung Die Radiogoldclearance thymektomierter erwachsener Mäuse ist gegenüber scheinthymektomierten bzw. den Kontrolltieren vermindert. Eine zusätzliche Immundepression durch Ganzkörperbestrahlung mit 350 R führt gegenüber den einzelnen Vergleichsgruppen zu keiner Änderung der Radiogoldclearance. Daraus kann mit aller Vorsicht geschlossen werden, dass der Thymus sowohl die Immunreaktionen als auch die Phagozytosefunktion als übergeordnetes Zentrum steuert. Jedes System scheint aber für sich eine funktionelle Einheit zu bilden.     

The effect of ferrimyoglobin on the oxidation of succinic acid by horse heart muscle preparations

Riassunto L'autore ha studiato l'azione della metamioglobina sul sistema succinossidasico. È stata riscontrata una netta inibizione che sembra essere specifica per la succinodeidrogenasi. Tale inibizione non è influenzata dall'aggiunta di bleu di metilene ma invece completamente rimossa dal KCN in presenza di bleu di metilene. L'inibizione provocata dalla metamioglobina sulla succinossidasi aumenta nel tempo.

The influence of synthetic DSIP (delta-sleep-inducing-peptide) on disturbed human sleep

Summary The effects of acute intravenous administration of synthetic DSIP, 25 nmoles/kg b. wt, on disturbed human sleep were tested in 6 middle-aged chronic insomniacs. The results were: longer sleep duration and a higher quality of sleep with fewer interruptions; slightly more REM-sleep, but no day-time sedation or other side effects though the sleep enhancing capacity was seen for up to 6 h of night sleep. Sleep-promoting effects occurred only in the second hour after injection, in the first hour a slight arousing effect was indicated. The study corroborates the findings of previous investigations in healthy subjects and shows that DSIP has a normalizing influence on human sleep regulation. Editorial foreword. Experimental work in the field of sleep research was energetically furthered by the efforts of the eminent physiologist and Nobel Laureate Walter Rudolf Hess, in whose memory the Zürich lecture series The Principle of Order in Physiology was held on March 14th, 1981. The following report documents the first controlled clinical experiments testing the delta-sleep-inducing-peptide on chronic sufferers of insomnia. In order that these findings may reach as wide a readership as possible, we are placing this brief but important report under the heading Generalia.In honor of W. R. Hess, to mark the centenary of his birth.     

Ecdysome 20-hydroxylase from the midgut of the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta L.).

An ecdysone 20-hydroxylase enzyme system that converts alpha-ecdysone to 20-hydroxyecdysone was prepared from the midgut of the tobacco hornworm prepupa. This partially purified enzyme is NADPH dependent and is localized in the mitochondrial fraction of the midgut tissue.     

Identification of uncommon amino acids in the lentil seed (Lens culinaris Med.).

The fraction of the free basic amino acids in the lentil seed was shown to contain gamma-hydroxyarginine, gamma-hydroxyornithine and homoarginine besides the common amino acids. Similar distribution was found in 5 varieties of lentil, with hydroxyarginine and arginine dominating. The significance of these findings with regard to chemotaxonomy and lentil consumption is discussed.

Seasonal variations in fat body metabolism of the green frog Rana esculenta (L.).

Rana esculenta (L.), kept under natural conditions, show almost constant body weights in the annual cycle. Fat body weight, however, has a distinct maximum in October decreasing continuously to a May minimum which is also evident in the fat body index. The triglyceride and protein contents show the same course. Suprisingly high amounts of glycogen are found, which reach a maximum in August.
