Summary Seasonal, and animal size and weight variations of the blood cells of the vanadium-containing ascidian,Ascidia ceratodes, were determined. The fluorescent properties of various cell types were ascertained, and discussed in terms of cell development, phylogenic position of the species, and chemicals in the cells.This investigation was supported by a grant from the Research Corporation and one of us (W.R.B.) received partial support from various University of California administrated fellowships. The effect of ACTH on cholinesterase activity in plasma,whole blood,and blood cells of rats

Résumé On a déterminé chez des rats l'activité cholinestérasique dans le plasma, sang total et cellules sanguines avant et après l'administration d'ACTH. On a constaté une augmentation hautement significative:P: 0,001 après l'administration de cette hormone.

Zusammenfassung Erhöhte Lactatmengen im Plasma können während körperlicher Anstrengung die Freisetzung eines Stoffes verursachen, welcher, ähnlich wie Insulin, im mittleren Hypothalamus wirkt. Dieser Stoff könnte auch an der Auslösung der Hypophagie, welche nach körperlicher Anstrengung auftritt, beteiligt sein.     

Platelets, endothelium and blood vessel wall

Aggregating platelets cause contraction of vascular smooth muscle, because they release serotonin and thromboxane A2. If the platelets aggregate in a blood vessel with intact intima, the platelet-products cause endothelium-dependent relaxation of the underlying smooth muscle. Hence, the presence of an intact intima considerably reduces the vasospastic response to platelet-aggregation. The major platelet products which trigger endothelium-dependent relaxations are the adenine nucleotides and serotonin. The ability of the endothelium to prevent platelet-induced vasospasm is augmented after chronic intake of cod liver oil, but is reduced after previous intimal injury.     

Interrelationship between mean arterial blood pressure,blood flow,and vascular resistance in solid tumor tissue of DS-carcinosarcoma

Zusammenfassung In vivo-Untersuchungen der Tumordurchblutung an Implantationstumoren eines DS-Carcinosarkoms in der Rattenniere zeigen eine deutliche Abhängigkeit der Durchblutungsgrösse vom Tumorgewicht. Bei Variation des arteriellen Mitteldrucks zwischen 40 und 135 mm Hg steigt die Durchblutung der einzelnen Tumoren linear mit zunehmendem Perfusionsdruck an. Eine zunehmende Rarefizierung der terminalen Strombahn mit ansteigendem Tumorgewicht wird belegt durch eine starke Zunahme des Strömungswiderstandes, der schon bei sehr jungen Tumoren wesentlich höhere Werte als bei verschiedenen Organen aufweist.

Comparison of protein synthesis profiles in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia cells and B-lymphocytes from peripheral blood,cord blood and tonsil

2D-gel electrophoresis was used to investigate protein synthesis in leukaemic cells from a series of 15 chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) patients, and in non-malignant B-cell populations from different sources. The protein synthesis profiles of CD5+ B-cells from umbilical cord blood and from tonsil were determined, and the levels of expression of their proteins were observed to be similar to the CLL cells. The CD5-cells from cord blood resembled peripheral blood B-lymphocytes, and the protein synthesis profile of CD5-cells from tonsils was very complex. One protein was also identified which consistently appeared to be synthesised at a low level in CD5+ B-cells from tonsil but which was always more prominant in CLL cells and other non-malignant B-lymphocytes. On the basis of these data it is possible that the closest non-malignant counterpart to CLL is the CD5+ B-lymphocyte from cord blood.

An attempt to immunize the blue crab,callinectes sapidus,with vertebrate red blood cells

Résumé Nous avons essayé d'augmenter le titre de l'hémagglutinine naturelle qui se trouve dans le sérum du crabe bleu,Callinectes sapidus, par l'inoculation d'hématies de vertébrés. On a noté une augmentation légère de ce titre après 48 h, mais elle n'était apparemment pas spécifique, puisque on peut la provoquer avec l'antigène hétérologique et une solution saline ainsi que l'antigène homologique. Il appert qu'il s'agit là d'une réponse intérieure défensive et non-spécifique due à quelque force extérieure.     

Reciprocal autoregulation of blood flow and blood pressure

Zusammenfassung Der Eingangswiderstand verschiedener Arterien wurde im Niederfrequenzbereich (0,0005 bis 0,25 Hz) mittels sinusförmig modulierter Pumpen-Perfusion mit arteriellem Blut an narkotisierten Hunden gemessen. Die Resultate lassen die Existenz zweier reziprok wirkender Autoregulationsmechanismen vermuten, deren Frequenzcharakteristik mit Hilfe eines einfachen linearen Modells simuliert werden konnte.
