Moulting hormone content in prothoracic glands and oenocytes ofTenebrio molitor within a moulting cycle

Zusammenfassung An isolierten und homogenisierten Prothorakaldrüsen und Oenocyten vonTenebrio wurde der Gehalt an Häutungshormonen mit Hilfe des Calliphoratests bestimmt. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass sowohl Prothorakaldrüsen als auch Oenocyten während des gesamten Häutungszyklus verpuppungsaktive Stoffe, wenn auch in unterschiedlicher Menge, enthalten. Die Ergebnisse werden mit jenen verglichen, bei denen der Hormontiter durch Extraktion ganzer Tiere bestimmt wurde. In Verbindung damit wurde das Zusammenspiel von Synthese und Abbau der Hormone diskutiert.

Secretory cycle and disappearance of the prothoracic glands inTenebrio molitor L. (coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Zusammenfassung Bei Tenebrio-Larven werden cyclische Veränderungen der Prothoraxdrüsen beschrieben. Sie bestehen in Vergrösserung der Drüse, verbunden mit Bildung von Körnchen, Fibrillen und Sekrettröpfchen im Cytoplasma. Etwa zwei Tage vor der Häutung wird das Sekret ausgestossen und die Drüse wieder verkleinert. Im letzten Larvenstadium liegt diese kritische Phase 24 h nach Aufhören des Fressens. Die Drüse degeneriert in der Puppe bei Beginn der Augenpigmentierung.     

7-Dehydrosterols in prothoracic glands of the silkworm,Bombyx mori

Summary Sterol analysis of prothoracic glands of the silkworm,Bombyx mori revealed the presence of 7-dehydrocampesterol and 7-dehydrositosterol together with 7-dehydrocholesterol. It was also found that the amounts of these 7-dehydrosterols were increased in proportion to the ecdysone titer.     

The innervation of the prothoracic glands ofCerura vinula L. (Lepidoptera)

Zusammenfassung Die Prothoraxdrüsen vonCerura vinula L. werden von Nerven innerviert, deren Axone neurosekretorische Grana enthalten und ausserdem in synaptischer Verbindung mit den Drüsenzellen stehen. Diese beiden Tatsachen sprechen für einedirekte Aktivierung der Prothoraxdrüsen durch Neurohormone.

Role of the nerve cord in the control of prothoracic glands inGalleria mellonella L.

Summary Certain lesions of the nerve cord in postfeeding larvae impede pupation by altering the proprioreceptive input, which modulates the prothoracicotropic activity of the brain. Direct influence of ventral ganglia on prothoracic glands is negligible.     

A queen bee extract (Apis mellifera L.) (Hymenoptera) reduces the fecundity ofTenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera)

Summary 3 different doses of crude queen bee extract were administered to pairs of adultTenebrio molitor L.; the extract exerted an inhibitory action on fecundity, but did not induce complete sterility of the females.     

On the innervation of the prothoracic glands inPapilio demoleus L. (Lepidoptera)

Zusammenfassung Die Prothorakaldrüse der SchmetterlingsraupePapilio demoleus L. ist mit Sicherheit innerviert, wobei jede einzelne Drüsenzelle von Nervenendigungen umsponnen ist. Der Befund spricht für eine Aktivierung der Häutungsdrüse durch Neurosekret, das durch Nerven zugeführt wird.     

Fluid secretion by isolated cockroach salivary glands

Summary An isolated preparation of the innervated cockroach salivary gland has been developed to study secretion. This gland secretes a fluid rich in Na and Cl in response to nerve stimulation or bath application of dopamine.Acknowledgments. Differentiation in vitro of chick embryo adrenal glands

Resumen Suprarrenales de embriones de pollo de 6 y 10 días de incubación, fueron cultivadas en medios con y sin el agregado de ACTH. Los cultivos fueron mantenidos por períodos de 6–12 días. Los explantos fueron estudiados con técnicas histoquímicas para lípidos y ésteres de colesterol. Las suprarrenales de embriones de 6 días acumulan lípidos y colesterol solamente cuando son cultivadas en medios con ACTH. Luego de 12 días de cultivo la mayoría de las suprarrenales de los embriones de 10 días pierden su contenido de lípidos si han sido cultivadas en un medio privado de ACTH. El agregado de la hormona previene esa péridida. Se discuten las implicancias fisiológicas de estos hallazgos.     

In vitro biosynthesis of beta-lipotropin in brain tissue]

We have recently developed methods to identify biosynthetized beta-endorphin and beta-lipotropin (beta-LPH) following incubation of Rat pars intermedia with radioactive amino acids. We used the same approach for rat brain tissue. In the striatum we found a peptide similar to beta-LPH while its identification in hypothalamus was less positive. This is the first demonstration of such biosynthesis and it could well be an important step in determining the biosynthetic patterns of cerebral endorphins and enkephalins.     

RNA polymerase activities in the isolated perfused rat liver

Summary The routine procedure for the isolation of rat liver induces a significant fall in RNA polymerase I and II activities which are rapidly restored to the control levels during perfusion.     

Ecdysteroids in vitro promote differentiation in the accessory glands of male mealworm beetles

Summary Physiological peak doses of 20-hydroxyecdysone were added to organ cultures of young pupal accessory glands of maleTenebrio molitor. During subsequent culture in vitro or in vivo, the glands accumulated adult-specific antigens. Control organ cultures showed no such antigen accumulation.
