Summary Concentration of copper in seminal plasma was found to be less than that of normal in cases of oligospermia and azoospermia. It was more in oligoasthenospermia and asthenospermia when compared with that normal. The effect of uremic serum on carbohydrate metabolism in rat diaphragm

Zusammenfassung Das Serum von Uremikern inhibiert die Glukoseutilisation im Rattendiaphragma. Der Sauerstoffverbrauch ändert sich nicht trotz niedrigerer Glukoseutilisation, da dieselbe durch eine erhöhte Auswertung anderer Substrate im Diaphragma kompensiert wird. Ein erhöhter Glykogen-, Laktat- und -ketoglutarat-Verbrauch konnte bewiesen werden.     

Sister chromatid exchanges in lymphocytes of normal and alcoholic subjects

The effects of alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and age on sister chromatid exchangen (SCE) frequency in human lymphocytes were assessed by means of multiple linear regression. An increase in SCE rates was associated with alcohol consumption (p=0.0001), smoking (p=0.0231), and, to a small extent (p=0.057), age. These three confounding factors explain 48% of the inter-personal variation in SCE rates among subjects studied.We are grateful to Dr D. Radioimmunoassay of serum thyroxin-binding-globulin in euthryoid subjects]

The authors have set up a thyroxine-binding-globulin radio-immunoassay in blood serum. The standard used has been determined by gravimetry, its maximal thyroxine-binding capacity is 0,96 mole of thyroxine per mole of TBG. Serum concentration of TBG has been measured in 159 euthyroid normals. The mean value of the concentration is 20 mg/l.

Semen electrolytes in normal and infertile subjects. II. Zinc

Summary Zinc levels in seminal plasma of normal subjects are compared with those of oligospermic, asthenospermic and azoospermic. A linear direct relationship seems to exist between zinc in seminal plasma and motility of spermatozoans. The possible implications of this are discussed.Acknowledgment. Authors are thankful to Mr P. Galactose transfer and UDP-Galactose hydrolysis in urine from normal balb/c and Balb/c YC8 mice

Summary By chromatographic method we have shown the existence of a complex system for galactose transfer from UDP-galactose and for nucleotide hydrolysis in urines from Balb/c YC8 and normal Balb/c mice. By action of sera from normal and ascitic mice as source of enzyme, we have been able to detect transfer for galactose in urines from ascitic mice and an important inhibitory effect of the nucleotide sugar hydrolysis by the sera with urines from normal mice.     

Determination of rubidium in human serum

Field desorption mass spectrometry (FD-MS) combined with stable isotope dilution has been used to determine rubidium concentrations from human serum. Samples obtained from 110 healthy volunteers (50 males, 60 females) were examined. The rubidium concentrations found varied from 0.96 to 3.56 mumoles/l, the average value being 1.96 mumoles/l. The precision of the measurements within a batch was 0.8%. The time for 1 analysis, including sample preparation is about 30 min, the total sample consumption is 100-200 mul. The corresponding potassium concentrations were also determined from all these serum samples; a weak trend towards higher potassium levels with increasing rubidium concentration is found.     

Inhibitory action of serum from a Laron dwarf on normal cellular function

Glucose uptake and O2 consumption of confluent glial cells grown in culture were measured in the presence of serum-free buffer and compared with those measured in the presence of serum from a normal volunteer, from an hGH-deficient dwarf and from a Laron dwarf. Cellular glucose uptake and respiration in the absence or presence of insulin or hGH are inhibited by Laron serum.     

Effect of high doses of somatostatin on adenylate cyclase activity in peripheral mononuclear leukocytes from normal subjects and from acute leukemia patients

In normal lymphocytes somatostatin non-competitively inhibited basal (ID50 5 x 10(-4) M) and isoproterenol- and forskolin-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity (Ac). In acute leukemia blasts, non-responsive to isoproterenol, forskolin, which activates the catalytic subunit, stimulated and somatostatin inhibited Ac, thus indicating the leukemic enzyme, though defective, retains the inhibitory pathway and catalyst function.

Specific rotation of phenylacetylglutamine excreted by cancer patients and normal subjects

Résumé On a isolé l'acide phénylacétylglutamine de l'urine de malades atteints de cancer et d'un sujet normal qui avaient absorbé de l'acide phénylacétique. Il n'y a pas de différence entre les rotations spécifiques de ces conjugués. Les résultats montrent que l'isomère optiquenon naturel d-glutamine ne se trouve pas dans certains sujets cancéreux.
