Summary Glutamic acid does not, either in small or in large doses, inhibit the degeneration of the medullary sheath of peripheral nerves in rats, induced within 15 days by addition of 0.25% of isoniazid to their diet. The detoxicating effect of glutamic acid, as described byCedrangolo ¹, thus only applies to the general toxic symptoms of the acute INH-intoxication, as is the case for vitamins B₂, B₁₂, A, E, K, and niacinamide.

Summary The action of nitrogen mustard TS 160 (trichlortriethyl amine hydrochloride) upon the cellular structure of spleen, bone marrow, and Lieberkühns gland of the intestine is weaker in ether narcosis in rats. The same effect is noticed in the blood of the experimental rats. Narcosis cannot prevent the death of the experimental rats after lethal doses of this agent.

Summary Bees are able to indicate direction to their hive comrades by means of a waggling dance of 2 kinds: in the horizontal plane with regard to the sun they point directly towards the goal by a waggling walk using the same angle to the sun as they took in their flight. Inside the dark hive in the vertical honey-comb, they transpose the angle between goal and sun to the field of gravity, whereby the sun's direction is shown by a waggling walk upwards, and the angle to the right or left of the sun's position is given by a dance-direction in the corresponding angle to the right or left of the zenith.If a piece of blue sky is made visible in an observation hive to the bees which are dancing in orientation by gravity, they recognise the position of the sun by this polarisation sample, and the effort to orientate themselves directly by the sun (as in the horizontal plane) comes into conflict with the orientation by gravity. The result is a dance direction which corresponds remarkably well with the halving of the angle between what the dance direction should have been by gravity and what it should have been by light orientation (Figure 1). This is also true when the bee is orientating itself by polarised sky light over its back, while the sun is at the other side of the honey-comb under its front (Figure 2), a situation which does not occur during flight but which is important for its dance in the swarm. The bees receiving the information compensate the deviation of the angle determined by light, and fly to the right goal.As the sun itself, as well as the piece of blue sky, was made visible to the dancers, its influence dominated and they orientated themselves by its light (Figure 3).

Über einen Bahnung seffekt bei sukzessiver Einwirkung von vestibulären und optokinetischen Reizen

Summary In the rabbit rotatory vestibular stimulation followed by optokinetic stimulation has a persisting facilitatory effect on the latter. The facilitation is independent of the direction of the second stimulus relative to the first one. It can therefore not be explained on the basis of the well-known addition effect in simultaneous stimulation. The neurophysiological and biological aspects of the phenomenon are discussed.     

Über die Reizung des Ferntastsinns bei Fischen und Amphibien

Summary Fishes and aquatic amphibians are able to detect and locate moving bodies and even obstacles at some distance by means of their lateral-line sense organs (Ferntastsinn). As was shown experimentally, the main physical process involved in these reactions are certain local damming phenomena in front of the moving object (rise of pressure, displacement of water particles). Obstacles cause an alteration of the damming phenomena produced by the moving animal's body itself (increase of water resistance).Kramer's different view is rejected; he overlooked the existence of damming phenomena and was not aware of the fact thatXenopus laevis reacts to surface waves even when the animal is totally submerged.

Über den Vitamin-B12-Gehalt von Organen verschieden ernährter Ratten

Summary Adult, male rats bred for over 10 generations on a soy meal-corn-diet had vitamin B₁₂ values of liver and kidney about 10 times lower than the controls. If the deficient ration was supplemented with 5µg/kg of B₁₂, these values were still about 1/5 of the controls. 3 weeks on the deficient diet lowered the B₁₂ levels in the livers and kidneys of previously undepleted rats to about 1/2, and a similar diet containing 0.1% of iodized casein lowered these levels to about 1/3 of the normal values but did not lower the B₁₂-concentration of organs of already deficient rats.Rats bred on the deficient diet and receiving for 1 month a supplement of 30µg/kg of vitamin B₁₂ or the stock diet with a similar B₁₂-content, had normal B₁₂-levels in livers and kidneys.     

Verlängerte Überlebenszeit von Hauthomotransplantaten bei Mäusen durch ein Methylhydrazinderivat

Summary Extended survival of skin homografts in mice was obtained by treatment with a methylhydrazine derivative (1-methyl-2-p-(isopropylcarbamoyl)-benzylhydrazine hydrochloride), representative of a new class of cytotoxic agents. Administration of 100 mg/kg prior to and continuously after the transplantation led to similar survival times as when 300 mg/kg was given daily only after the transplantation. In mice, the compound seems to be more effective than most of the drugs so far known to suppress transplantation immunity.

Über eine Tetrahydroisochinolinverbindung mit analgetischer Wirkung

Summary Ro 4-1778/1 (1-(p-Chlorphenethyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline) showed in pharmacological tests distinct analgetic effects similar to those of codeine as well as some spasmolytic activity resembling that of papaverine, whereas its side effects were absent or at least considerably less pronounced than those known for codeine.     

Die Wirkung einer Leberschädigung durch Thioacetamid auf die mikrosomale Aromatisierung von Testosteron bei der Ratte

Summary Rat liver microsomes, NADPH-regenerating system, and 1, 2-³H-testosterone have been incubated in vitro. The loss of tritium from the steroid, associated with aromatization of testosterone, was linear with time for 20 min and required NADPH. Pre-treatment of the rats with thioacetamide raised the liberation of tritium from 1, 2-³H-testosterone. The results suggest that liver damage by thioacetamide in rats may give rise to increased aromatization of testosterone.

Summary Mice exposed to a lethal total-body X-irradiation were partly protected by comparatively small doses of 1-hydrazinophthalazine (Apresoline®), and even smaller ones of [2-(octahydro-1-azocinyl)-ethyl]-guanidine (C. 5864-Su, guanethidine), administered prophylactically. On the other hand, only C. 5864-Su and reserpine, but not Apresoline, afforded protection against organic peroxide intoxication.
