Epidermal growth factor stimulates proliferation of rat hepatoma cells producing alpha-fetoprotein.

Epidermal growth factor stimulated both [3H]thymidine uptake and proliferation of rat AH66 hepatoma cells. However, the increase in cell number was not accompanied by a proportional increase in the levels of alpha-fetoprotein of the culture media. The effects of EGF on the cell proliferation were antagonized by N6,O2'-dibutyryl cAMP.     

Insulin stimulates sodium-potassium activated ATPase from rat hippocampus

Summary It is suggested that insulin is capable of activating cerebral NaK-ATPase in a dose-dependent manner.Supported by grants from Ministerium für Hoch- und Fachschulwesen der DDR.

Summary Nerve growth factor specifically stimulates the degradation of chondromucoprotein in the chick embryonic cartilage cultivated in vitro, with little effect on chondromucoprotein, RNA, DNA and protein synthesis.Acknowledgment. DOCA administration increases renal phospholipase activity in the rat

Summary The phospholipase activity of renal tissue has been evaluated in controls and in DOCA treated rats. DOCA treated animal showed a higher than normal enzyme activity. Since a phospholipase is the key step in prostaglandin biosynthesis, it is suggested that the increased prostaglandin release promoted by mineraloactive steroids is mediated by an activation of this key enzyme.This work has been partly supported by a grant from Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.To whom reprint requests should be addressed.

Calcitonin gene related peptide stimulates adenylate cyclase activity in rat striated muscle

Rat calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) and salmon calcitonin (CT) stimulated adenylate cyclase activity in a dose-dependent manner in the rat diaphragm and in the kidney. The ED50 value of rat CGRP was lower and that of salmon CT was higher in the diaphragm than in the kidney. These results suggest that CGRP stimulates adenylate cyclase activity in the striated muscle by reacting with sites distinct from the site in the kidney.     

Iproniazid (marsilid) reverses dopamine-effect and stimulates the growth of mouse neuroblastoma in vitro

Zusammenfassung Die hemmende Wirkung von Dopamin auf die Zellteilung von Neuroblastoma beruht wahrscheinlich nicht auf dem Effekt seines desaminierten Metaboliten, obwohl sie durch den MAO-Hemmer Marsilid aufgehoben wird.     

Streptozotocin induced diabetic nephropathy and renal tumors in the rat

Summary Adult Wistar rats rendered diabetic by a single dose of streptozotocin develop renal morphological changes which show subtle differences compared to those seen in human diabetic renal disease. The early tubular degeneration is sited in the distal rather than the proximal convoluted tubule and subsequent glomerular lesion shows linear deposits of IgG and albumin in the basement membrane rather than in the mesangium. Mechanical simulation of renal pelvic wall peristalsis in the rat

Summary A urinary concentrating defect was induced in Munich-Wistar rats by removing the renal pelvis from 1 kidney. This defect was partially corrected by crudely simulating the actions of pelvic wall peristalsis with a mechanical system that cyclically compressed the exposed renal papilla.A portion of this work was conducted at The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, Salsbury Cove, Maine and was supported by NIH grant 2 RO1-AM15972-10 awarded to Dr B. Dissociation between compensatory renal growth and induction of (Na++K+-ATPase in rat kidney after uninefrectomy

Zusammenfassung Nach Uninephrektomie und bilateraler Adrenalektomie entsteht eine Dissoziation zwischen der Nierenvergrösserung und der (Na⁺+K⁺)-ATPase Aktivität. Es besteht wahrscheinlich kein Zusammenhang zwischen der Nierenvergrösserung und der Induktion von (Na⁺+K⁺)-ATPase. Auch in der vergrösserten Niere sind die Nebennierenhormone notwendig, um die (Na⁺+K⁺)-ATPase zu erhalten.

The composition of the renal medulla during natriuresis accompanying saline loading in the rat

Zusammenfassung In 38 Ratten wurde die Na- und Harnstoff-Konzentration im Gewebewasser der Nierenrinde, des Nierenmarks und der Papillenspitze nach einer Infusion von isotoner Kochsalzlösung festgestellt. Die Konzentration beider Stoffe war in der Papillenspitze und in dem Nierenmark bedeutend niedriger als bei den Kontrollratten.     

Effect of substrate pretreatment on renal organic ion transport in the adult rat

Summary The ability of renal cortical slices to accumulate PAH and NMN was not significantly affected by pretreatment of adult rats with large doses of PAH. Pretreatment of adult rats with THAM significantly increased PAH accumulation but had no effect on NMN. Inulin and PAH clearance and filtration fraction were significantly decreased by PAH pretreatment but unaffected by THAM pretreatment. The effects of pretreatment on transport are probably due to non-specific toxicity.Supported in part by U. S. The influence of the experimental conditions on the renal response to angiotensin in the rat

Résumé Les conditions expérimentales déterminent la réponse rénale à l'angiotensine chez le rat. Antérieurement, on a seulement demontré une réponse natriurétique à cette hormone. Cependant, chez les rats chargés chroniquement de sodium, on a demontré que l'angiotensine en doses de 0,00005–0,005µg/kg/min est toujours anti-natriurétique. Après une opération récente, ou sous anesthésie ou en présence d'une déplétion de sodium, l'angiotensine à ces doses, chez les mêmes animaux, est soit sans effet ou même natriurétique.     

Release of renal kallikrein to the perfusate by isolated rat kidney

Summary The addition of furosemide to the fluid used to perfuse isolated rat kidney increases the kallikrein activity found in the perfusion fluid. The experiments favour the concept that furosemide activates a kallikrein precursor or/and the synthesis and release of kallikrein in the kidneys.
