Summary This lecture was held in Zürich to commemorate the 70^th birthday of Prof.Paul Karrer; it briefly outlines his life-work as a scientist and then reviews, in greater detail, some of his important work in various fields: vegetable dyestuffs (carotenoids), vitamins (particularly vitamins A, E and K) and curare alkaloids.As is the purpose of this lecture, a review is also given of the author's own work: ergot alkaloids and their derivatives; cardiac glycosides of squill, digitalis etc.; and finally, the most recent results of research on chlorophyll — the crystallization of natural chlorophylla andb after many years of endeavour.

Geschlechtsabhängige Grössenunterschiede der Mitochondrien in der Zona fasciculata der Nebennierenrinde der Ratte

Summary Diameters of mitochondria of the external zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex of 4 female and 4 male Sprague-Dawley-rats are determined with the image analyzing computer Quantimet 720. On the average females have significantly larger mitochondria. The mitochondria show an ellipsoid deformation, the long axes are orientated parallel to the columns of the zona fasciculata.

Summary OnAllium schoenoprasum L. andPoa pratensis L., two species that do not belong to the host plants ofMegoura viciae Buckt., this aphid pierces the sievetubes as in its natural host,Vicia faba L. In none of these plants do the aphids take up³²P from the parenchyma. Presumably phloem-sucking aphids probe, before finally settling in the sieve-tubes of the plant, to recognize the quality of the plant.

Summary Several methods have been studied for concentrating the human saliva in order to get reliable electrophoresis patterns. The best method is a dialysis in a cellophane tube against veronal buffer (pH 8.2) followed by vacuum exsiccation.

Summary The conduction velocity of the unmyelinated portion of the optic nerve fibres within the cat's retina was measured by shifting a microelectrode from the blind spot outwards and stimulating antidromically in the lateral geniculate body. The mean conduction velocities were 2.8 m/s for the fast, and 1.7 m/s for the slow group of optic nerve fibres, as compared with maxima of 70 and 23 m/s respectively for the same groups in the myelinated extrabulbar portion.

Summary A virus has been isolated from grape vines diseased with leaf roll which is the cause of this dangerous illness in vineyards. This was proved by means of electromicrographs of the virus particles in pressed juices of all the diseased vine crops examined. The virus is only transmissible by graft and not by juice.

Summary In foetal rat stem ganglia originating from the diencephalon, chemodifferentiation and morphogenesis take place earlier than in those from the telencephalon. Between 3 and 10 days postnatally, enzyme activities of all regions largely level up; later, the structures from the telencephalon show higher activities. Exceptions are acid phosphatase and thiamine pyrophosphatase, whose activities are higher in the stem ganglia from the diencephalon than in those from the telencephalon. The globus pallidus behaves in every respect like the structures from the diencephalon.

Zur Lokalisation der Östrogenproduktion in der menschlichen Plazenta

Summary The syncytial sprouts of the human placenta were found to give a distinctly stronger reaction for glucose-6-phosphat-dehydrogenase, DPNH-diaphorase and steroid-3--ol-dehydrogenase than other regions of the trophoblastic syncytium. Besides they show a more intensive basophilic reaction and higher contents of fat than other parts of the syncytium. Therefore the syncytial sprouts can be regarded as the areas of the trophoblastic syncytium that are specialized for estrogen production.
