Further evidence of a positive correlation between exposure to nitrate fertilizers (NaNO3 and KNO3) and gastric cancer death rates: nitrites and nitrosamines.

Mean age-adjusted death rates for gastric cancer in Chile for 1960, 1962 and 1964 were associated with exposure to sodium nitrate and nitrates (NaNO3 and KNO3) used as fertilizers, by province. The general population exposure to NaNO3 and nitrates exhibited correlation coefficients of 0.745 and 0.718 with the death rates, respectively.     

Nitrate fertilizers as environmental pollutants: Positive correlation between nitrates (NaNO3 and KNO3) used per unit area and stomach cancer mortality rates

Summary Since a significant positive correlation between nitrate fertilizer exposure and stomach cancer mortality has been found, a study of nitrate fertilizer pollution in arable land in terms of amount of nitrates used per unit area (kg/ha) and stomach cancer death rates was carried out. The regression of death rates for stomach cancer, standardized for age, on the nitrates used per unit area, by province (N=25), exhibited a significant association between the 2 variables (p<0.004). When industrialized provinces (N=3) were not considered, a highly significant association was found (F=16.47; d.f.=1,20;p<0.0006). The correlation coefficient was+0.672.     

The karyotype,C-bands and AgNO3-bands of a lungless salamander from Korea:Onychodactylus fischeri (Boulenger) (Amphibia,Urodela)

The karyotype of a lungless salamander,Onychodactylus fischeri, from Korea was analyzed and compared with that of the Japanese congeneric species,O. japonicus. In both species the diploid karyotype consists of78 chromosomes, including 6 pairs of large chromosomes, 6 pairs of medium-sized ones, and the remaining 27 pairs of microchromosomes. The chromosome number ofO. fischeri, 2n=78, is, like that ofO. japonicus, the largest so far reported in the order Urodela. C-banding showed that constitutive heterochromatin inO. fischeri was mainly in the centromeric regions and near the secondary constrictions of the large chromosomes. AgNO₃-bands were located in the secondary constrictions associated with C-band heterochromatin.     

Potentiation of ocular response to adrenaline by 3,3-dimethyl-1-[3-methylaminopropyl]-1-phenylphthalan (Lu 3-010) and a thiophthalan analogue (Lu 5-003): Blockers of catecholamine uptake

Résumé Concernant la durée de l'effet du traitement, le composé Lu 3-010 en combinaison avec l'adrenaline est semblable à la protriptyline, et il est plus actif que Lu 5-003 en ce qui concerne la potentiation de la reaction oculaire provoquée par l'adrenaline. Administrés séparement, les composés Lu 3-010 et Lu 5-003 ont des effets semblables, tandis que la protriptyline est le composé le plus actif. L'accroissement de l'efficacité de ces composés résulte probablement de leur abilité à bloquer le mécanisme de l'incorporation de la catecholamine.
