Juvenile hormone I is the principal juvenile hormone in a hemipteran insect,Riptortus clavatus

Juvenile hormone I (JH I) was identified by combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry as the predominant JH in the hemolymph of female adults of the bean bug,Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Hemiptera: Alydidae). Among JH I, II, and III, JH I was the most effective hormone for inducing the synthesis of yolk proteins in diapause adults.     

Sequence comparison of human pituitary growth hormone,human chorionic somatomammotropin and ovine pituitary lactogenic hormone

Zusammenfassung Ein Vergleich der Aminosäuresequenzen von menschlichen Wachstumshormonen und menschlichem Chorion-Somatomammotropin mit denjenigen von Prolactin zeigt, dass 26% des Rückstandes in allen drei Molekülen die gleiche Position hatten mit zusätzlichen 34% als möglichen Ersatz. Alle drei Hormone scheinen einen gleichen Ursprung zu haben.     

Prolactin, growth hormone and the immune system in humans

Prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (GH) qualify as lymphoid growth and differentiation factors. Yet, long-standing hyper- or hyposecretion of PRL or GH does not induce any significant alteration of the immune system. Subclinical changes in laboratory parameters (such as chemotaxis or phagocytosis by granulocytes or macrophages or natural killer cell activity) have been reported in some of these conditions. The GH-insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I axis is dysregulated in ageing, in catabolic states and in critical illness. Immune parameters, such as infection rate, are being monitored during clinical trials with GH or IGF-I. Hyperprolactinaemia may play an aggravating role in systemic lupus erythematosus, in autoimmune thyroiditis and in other autoimmune diseases. The patient may benefit from increased alertness about interactions between the endocrine and immune systems.     

Search for the neurodepressing hormone in a stomatopod,Squilla mantis

Summary Crude extracts ofSquilla mantis eyestalks have no neurodepressing activity in theProcambarus bouvieri bioassay. However, partially purified extracts show a very high level of neurodepressing hormone with the same characteristics as the decapod hormone.This investigation was supported by grant No. 192 from the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia, and by a grant from Fondo de Fomento Educativo. Ecdysteroid hormone action

Several reviews devoted to various aspects of ecdysone research have been published during the last few years. Therefore, this article concentrates mainly on the considerable progress in ecdysone research observed recently, and will cover the results obtained during the last 2 years. The main emphasis is put on the molecular mode of ecdysteroid receptor-mediated hormone action. Two examples of interaction with other hormonal signalling pathways are described, namely crosstalk with juvenile hormone and insulin. Some selected, recently investigated examples of the multitude of hormonal responses are described. Finally, ecological aspects and some practical applications are discussed.     

Effect of long acting somatostatin-analogue,SMS 201995, on gut hormone secretion in normal subjects

Summary SMS 201 995 is a new long acting analogue of somatostatin. We have investigated its effect on basal and meal stimulated secretion of gut hormones and have shown that after a single s. c. injection of 50 g it lowers significantly the basal plasma levels of pancreatic polypeptide, secretin, motilin, pancreatic glucagon and insulin, it also effectively suppresses the postprandial release of pancreatic polypeptide, gastrin, secretin, gastric inhibitory peptide, pancreatic glucagon and insulin. Except for the usual brief discomfort of an injection, no symptoms or untoward effects were observed.     

Antidiuretic hormone involvement in the release of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone by hyperosmotic stimuli

In the normal Wistar rat, the plasma alpha-MSH level was raised by hypertonic saline injection (as compared with control rats injected with isotonic saline). No such rise in alpha-MSH followed hypertonic saline administration in the Brattleboro (hereditary diabetes insipidus) animal (compared to isotonic saline injected controls). It is suggested that, in the rat, endogenous antidiuretic hormone is involved in the secretory response of the pars intermedia to osmotic stimuli.     

Radioimmunoassay of an invertebrate peptide hormone — the crustacean neurosecretory hyperglycemic hormone

Summary Antibodies against hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) ofCarcinus were raised in rabbits by injection of extract from sinus glands which contain high concentrations of CHH. The antiserum neutralizes the biological activity of CHH and binds¹²⁵J-CHH. A RIA for CHH was established and was used to measure the hormone content of sinus glands.Dedicated to Prof. M. Growth hormone signal transduction

Growth hormone (GH) promotes animal growth by stimulating bone and cartilage cell proliferation, and influences carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Some of these effects are brought about indirectly via somatomedin induction in hepatocytes, others by acting directly on the target cells. In either case, GH first binds to specific receptors on cells to trigger a sequence of biochemical events culminating in a biological response. Recently much has been learnt about the molecular structure of GH receptor, its binding to ligand, and the ensuing signal transduction events.     

Insect anti-juvenile hormone and juvenile hormone activity from plants in the genusNama

Summary The insect anti-juvenile hormones precocene I and II (7-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran and 6,7-dimethoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran) were identified in three of nineNama (Hydrophyllaceae) species. Precocene I occurred inN. lobbii while precocene II occurred inN. hispidum, N. lobbii andN. sandwicense. N. hispidum contained the highest concentration (ca 0.5% dry weight) of precocene II, which was found in the leaves, stems, seed capsules, corolla, glandular trichomes, and seeds. In addition to the anti-juvenile hormone, insect juvenile hormone activity was detected in the organosoluble extracts ofN. rothrockii andN. sandwicense. N. sandwicense is the first plant discovered to contain compounds with both anti- and juvenile hormone activity.

Zusammenfassung Enzym-histochemische Untersuchungen weisen darauf hin, dass die sogenannten Corpora lutea praeovulationia im Ovarium vonPoecilia reticulata keine Steroide produzieren und deswegen als Corpora atretica betrachtet werden müssen. Demgegenüber steht fest, dass in den Granulosazellen, die die Oozyten umgeben, die Enzyme 3-Hydroxysteroid-Dehydrogenase, Glucose-6-phosphat-Dehydrogenase und einige Enzyme des Krebszyklus nachzuweisen sind. Infolgedessen können die Granulosazellen als Steroid-produzierende Zellen angesehen werden.
