Culture Input in Foreign Language Teaching

Language and culture are highly interrelated, that is to say, language is not only the carrier of culture but it is also restricted by culture. Therefore, foreign language teaching aiming at cultivate students＇ intercultural communication should take culture differences into con- sideration. In this paper, the relationship between language and culture will be discussed. Then I will illustrate the importance of intercultural c Finally, according to the present situation of foreign language teaching in China, several strategies for cultural input in and out of class will be suggested.     

Culture misunderstood——the language barrier in cross culture——From the aspect of differences on word cultural connotation

From the relationship between culture and language,we know language is a carrier of culture;each nation has its own distinctive culture.Through comparing cultural connotation between Chinese characters and English words,we know it is more important for us to master the cultural connotation of words than just knowing their spelling and pronouncing.Only under this condition,we can use English properly and freely.     

Cultivation of EFL Learners’Intercultural Competence

Nowadays, educators from home and abroad believe that learning a foreign language means learning a great deal of the foreign civilization and culture. And the utmost goal of language teaching is to cultivate EFL learners’communicative competence, but not merely the linguistic knowledge. Thus, teaching a foreign language is more than teaching new words, expressions and grammar rules, but should also incorporate the target culture elements into language knowledge. In order to improve EFL learners’English proficiency, teachers must make efforts to cultivate EFL learners’intercultural competence and promote their sensibility and adaptability to the differences between Chinese culture and the Western culture. Only by doing so, can EFL learners communicate with native speakers appropriately and smoothly. This paper proposes some effective teaching techniques and methods that can be applied in English classroom to cultivate Chinese EFL learners’intercultural competence.     

News Translation and Intercultural Communication

Challenges in translation can be approached from the perspective of intercultural communication, and translation also plays a major role in communication between cultures. The translators of news should be culture conscious and adopt flexible strategies in dealing with cultural differences. In news translation, the readability of the target language text counts the most.

SEXISM IN ENGLISH

The language a culture uses reveals the values and beliefs of that culture. Sexism in the English language is discussed from both linguistic form and conversational style in this paper. The correction of this problem has also been raised and several suggestions are given in the end of this paper. Sexism in English language reflects the sexism in our thoughts, so sexism will not disappear from the language we use until it is completely erased from our mind.

Body language is an important part of nonverbal communication and it is connected with culture. This article devotes to a comparison and contrast of body language in different cultures which aims to illustrate the differences and similarities of body language so as to achieve efficient communication.

EFL Learning in China and the Acquisition of Culture of English-speaking Countries

This thesis is a study on the close relationship between EFL Learning in China and the acquisition of culture of English-speaking countries. First,it analyses the inticate relationship between language and. cultrue,then the causes of typical cultural mistakes made by EFL learners in China , and the goals of acquisition of culture of English ?speaking countries.
