The polypeptide mastoparan, isolated from the venom of the Oriental Hornet, Vespa orientalis, induces hypothermia in white mice 15 minutes after its intraperitoneal injection. The hypothermic effect is induced by mastoparan obtained from different hornet and wasp venoms. The normal murine core temperature is lowered by mastoparan from 38 degrees C to as far as 33 degrees C. This lowering lasts for one hour and is reversible.  相似文献

Summary The quantal contents of endplate potentials from extraocular muscles of an antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki were measured over a range of temperatures. Quantal release was maximal at about 5°C but showed little dependence on temperature between –2°C and 10°C. Above 10°C quantal content declined until release ceased about 18°C. In view of the fact that the ambient temperature at which these fish live is constant at –1.9°C, the results suggest thatPagothenia borchgrevinki is only partially adapted to its environment despite 25 million years acclimatization.The authors wish to thank the staff of New Zealand's Scott Base, Antarctica, without whose cooperation the work would have been impossible. Anatalanta aptera is a wingless fly which lives in subantarctic islands, particularly in sea bird colonies. Developmental patterns of supercooling capacity were studied in an experimental population reared at 5°C and fed ad libitum. Mean supercooling points of the eggs, second and third instar larvae, pupae, teneral and mature adults were –28.0°C, –10.8°C, –8.8°C, 17.6°C, –16.6°C and –8.2°C respectively. Low mean supercooling points were found for inactive stages (eggs, pupae) and, unexpectedly among Diptera, teneral adults. Mature adults had a combination of low supercooling ability, high lipid content and physogastry. The results are compared with those obtained in winged species from other families of Diptera.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory tests have been performed, on the behavior of the jellyfishPelagia noctiluca as a function of the water temperature. It has been found that the usual contractions of the umbrella are almost completely missing at 6°C; they begin to appear at about 7–8°C and they reach frequencies of about 10 and 40 per min at 11 and 15°C respectively. An ambient temperature of about 11°C appears to be a threshold value below which this kind of medusa ceases to move actively and sinks, while at higher temperatures it gradually begins to shift, showing a positive thermotropism in the presence of temperature gradients greater than about 0.01 °C/cm.This work was supported by grant No. 80.00748.88 from the National Research Coucil of Italy (CNR).  相似文献

Summary Ceftizoxime, when assayed using the disc agar-diffusion method withBacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 as the indicator microorganism in buffered (pH 6) medium, retains its potency in aqueous solution at 4°C for about 3 months. Even after 4 months, some residual activity can be found. However, when this solution was assayed on the non-buffered medium, a seemingly quicker but misleading loss of potency was observed. This resulted from inadequate sensitivity of the assay. The sensitivity of the ceftizoxime assay was increased by lowering the incubation temperature from 37°C to 30°C. The pH- and incubation temperature-dependent potency must be kept in mind when assaying ceftizoxime.  相似文献

Summary A fall in diurnal rearing temperature (from 33°C to 28°C) during the 2 last larval instars ofSchistocerca gregaria induces a lengthening of development and a slowing down of growth. At 28°C, circulating levels of juvenile hormones, particularly those of JH3, diminish from the middle of the 4th instar but ecdysteroids and proteins accumulate in haemolymph.  相似文献

Summary ATPase activity and force generation have been measured simultaneously in isolated, demembranated muscle fibers of the Pacific blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) between 0 and 30°C. Tension generation is relatively independent of temperature above 15°C and falls with a Q10 of <1.5 on decreasing the temperature to 0°C. In contrast, the Q10 for ATPase activity is 2.2 over the range 0–30°C. The results are interpreted in terms of the cross bridge theory of contraction.  相似文献

Summary The temperature, which leads to 50% reduction of catalytic activity by heat denaturation, has been determined for 8 different enzymes from cod muscle, as being in the range between 30 and 52°C. Therefore, there are no indications of a generally different heat resistance of enzymes from cold-blooded animals as compared with those from warm-blooded animals. The same conclusion is derived from calculations ofQ 10-values, measured between +37 and – 37°C for cathepsin and glycylglycine dipeptidase.

The structure and function of heterotrimeric G protein subunits is known in considerable detail. Upon stimulation of a heptahelical receptor by the appropriate agonists, the cognate G proteins undergo a cycle of activation and deactivation; the α-subunits and the βγ-dimers interact sequentially with several reaction partners (receptor, guanine nucleotides and effectors as well as regulatory proteins) by exposing appropriate binding sites. For most of these domains, low molecular weight ligands have been identified that either activate or inhibit signal transduction. These ligands include short peptides derived from receptors, G protein subunits and effectors, mastoparan and related insect venoms, modified guanine nucleotides, suramin analogues and amphiphilic cations. Because compounds that act on G proteins may be endowed with new forms of selectivity, we propose that G protein subunits may therefore be considered as potential drug targets. Summary In the Mediterranean field cricket,Gryllus bimaculatus, reproduction is controlled by temperature and the corpus allatum (CA) hormone JH III. In CA of females reared at 24°12°C(168 h) (high reproduction rate) a first peak in JH III synthesis is reached about 4 days earlier than in those of 20°C females (low reproduction rate). Furthermore, in 20°C animals CA activity is low during the entire oviposition period, whereas at 24°12°C high CA activity is found during this period of adult life. Summary The organophosphorus insecticides chlorpyrifos, leptophos, and phosfolan and the carbamate methomyl was found to be more toxic to larvae of a susceptible strain ofSpodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) when the posttreatment temperature was increased from 20 to 35°C. In contrast, the pyrethroids permethrin, fenvalerate, deltamethrin, cypermethrin, and flucythrinate were more toxic at 20°C than at 35°C. This effect was more pronounced in the pyrethroid-resistant strains. Evidently, resistance levels were reduced at low temperature. However, the application of piperonyl butoxide or DEF in combinations with the tested pyrethroids on R-strains resulted in reducing the effect of temperature.  相似文献

At 25°C, secondary dormancy was induced in seeds ofE. crus-galli exposed for 100 days to oxygen deficiency. By contrast, hypoxia did not induce dormancy at 15°C or prevent dormancy termination at 7°C. Secondary dormancy was terminated after 2 months stratification at 7°C. Summary During periods of torporSminthopsis crassicaudata, a dasyurid marsupial, regulated its body temperature above about 16.3°C in summer and 13.0°C in winter. Animals with lower body temperatures were unable to arouse. Liver, heart and brain mitohondrial succinate:cytochrome c reductase showed a thermal transition at 16°C in summer and at 12.5°C in winter. Thus the lowest regulated body temperature was just above the temperature where changes were detected in mitochondrial respiration.Acknowledgments. Summary Temperature is limiting for the snow surface activity ofIsotoma hiemalis: values below a threshold of –2.5° to –3°C are avoided. Changing barometric pressure leads to increased surface activity, thus being responsible for mass appearances. Encystment, which at a temperature of 15°C is photoperiodically controlled inGonyaulax polyedra, can also be induced by a decrease of temperature, from 20 to 10 or 8°C in the absence of photoperiodic signals. The cyst-inducing capacity of the decrease in temperature depends on the circadian phase: in constant light, the maximum of sensitivity was found at the beginning of subjective night. In a light/dark cycle, however, cyst formation was reduced during dark phase, indicating that light is required for the process of encystment. A similar light dependence was seen in the effect of the physiologically occurring cyst inducer 5-methoxytryptamine, but not in the encystment response to the protonophores monensin and nigericin.  相似文献
