Natural history data on snakes collected in situ are scarce because of the great sampling effort required to record individuals with methods that do not interfere with their activities (e.g. visual surveys). We collected data on relative abundance and natural history, including records of ingested prey, microhabitat use, and behaviour of a snake assemblage along transects marked alongside a river in south-eastern Brazil. We recorded eight species from two families, Viperidae and Dipsadidae using visual searches over 12 months. We quantified available microhabitats in the sampled transects and used electivity indices to determine preferred microhabitats for the pit viper Bothrops moojeni, the most frequent species. Several species of snakes use riverside habitats where they can find food and suitable microhabitats, even in areas that are not pristine, adding to the importance of preserving the remaining riverside vegetation and habitat structure in such areas.  相似文献

Abstract

We analysed the diet of Ischnocnema henselii from a subtropical Araucaria forest through stomach flushing. The identified prey items comprised arthropods such as spiders, ants, orthopterans, collembolans and homopterans. We consider I. henselii to be a nocturnal and opportunistic sit-and-wait predator. Small animals are preferred. Because this species lives permanently on the forest floor, we also determined the composition of the habitat's leaf-litter mesofauna. By using Winkler sieve extraction, we obtained a spectrum of small invertebrates that reflected the prey in the stomach contents well. The only exceptions were mites, the most abundant leaf-litter inhabitants, which frogs either avoided or ignored. Our results represent the first information on the diet of I. henselii and are discussed in comparison with data on related species and in relation to the relevance of this predator within the food web of subtropical montane rain forests in southern Brazil.  相似文献

A population of Calathotarsus simoni Schiapelli and Gerschman (1975) was discovered on a hillside in the Ventania system, Argentina. Our objectives were to quantify burrow density, record burrow morphology and door characteristics and describe the micro-habitat. We counted 57 burrows and report a density of 0.01 burrows/m2. Aggregation indices suggest that burrows are aggregated under some area plots but more evenly distributed on others. The trapdoor is thick and rigid with bevelled edges connected to the entrance rim by a narrow articulated hinge. Two egg sacs from females were obtained and data on eggs and spiderlings are presented. We registered six burrows of an undetermined species of Actinopus. While a few specimens of Actinopus sp. were found inhabiting this hillside, the highest proportion of burrows belonged to C. simoni. Spider diversity on the hillside shows the predominance of Linyphiidae, Nemesiidae and Gnaphosidae. One juvenile of C. simoni was captured using pitfall traps.  相似文献

Arthropods play a significant role in ecosystems as prey for animals such as insectivorous primates. The venomous Javan slow loris (Nycticebus javanicus) is a nocturnal primate endemic to the island of Java, Indonesia. It remains unknown if its venom is partially sequestered from noxious arthropod prey. We studied the little-known arthropod community in a rural agriculture system in West Java, Indonesia, in order to investigate the potential prey and source for sequestration of venom. We found specimens of the partially noxious insect orders Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera and of the class Arachnida in slow loris foraging trees in an agricultural area in West Java, Indonesia. To examine the effects of environmental conditions on the abundance of this food source, arthropods were trapped every two weeks for five months, using sweep net transects, Malaise and pitfall traps. Trap type had a significant effect on taxa caught. Wind strength negatively affected the number of Lepidoptera captured in the Malaise trap and humidity had a confounding effect on Orthoptera caught by sweep net. Despite the short-term nature of our study, by using a combination of trapping methods, we identified a relatively high diversity of insects in a human-dominated landscape. Our results can be used as a basis to understand the proximate and ultimate factors shaping the use of venom by the slow loris as a primate.  相似文献

Prairie dog eradication negatively affects dependent wildlife. Assessing the effects of prairie dog activities on reptiles and amphibians may depend upon the efficacy of trapping designs. We compared capture rates of reptiles and amphibians on black-tailed prairie dog ( Cynomys ludovicianus ) colonies and on adjacent uncolonized short-grass prairie, using funnel traps and pitfall traps with drift fences, as well as ground captures. We captured 152 reptiles and amphibians representing 10 species. We captured 51.3% of all reptiles and amphibians on colonies, compared to 48.7% from uncolonized sites. Overall, captures of reptiles and amphibians were similar on colonies and uncolonized sites for all capture methods combined. We achieved higher capture rates on uncolonized sites using funnel traps and pitfall traps but higher capture rates on colonies for ground captures. For all years on all sites combined, we captured significantly more animals in funnel traps (52.6%), surpassing pitfall trap captures (23.0%) and ground captures (24.3%). We recommend using multiple Y-shaped drift fence arrays ≥7.6 m in length, funnel traps with double-ended openings, and black-colored pitfall traps with opening diameters ≥30 cm.  相似文献

Several causes have been considered to explain the specialized ant-feeder habits of the bufonids. We analysed the diet and availability of prey items for sympatric Bufo arenarum, Bufo dorbignyi and Odontophrynus americanus living in a grassland of the flooding pampa, Argentina. Frogs and insects were captured once a month with pitfall traps during the 2-year sampling. The frogs were measured and the stomach content was analysed. Odontophrynus americanus ingests Lepidoptera larvae, Coleoptera, Diptera and Homoptera; while both Bufo species not only feed on ants, but also prefer them. Whereas the two Bufo species show high niche overlap, the niche overlapping between both Bufo and Odontophrynus americanus was low. There are significant differences among body size of both Odontophrynus americanus and Bufo arenarum when compared with B. dorbignyi ; while there are no differences in body size of O. americanus and B. arenarum. Gape is larger in Odontophrynus americanus than in Bufo dorbignyi and B. arenarum, but it is similar in the two Bufo species. The mean prey size is larger for Odontophrynus americanus, followed by Bufo arenarum and B. dorbignyi. These results would confirm that the bufonids have ant-feeder habits, perhaps due to their small edentate gape that would constitute a morphological constraint that could explain their mirmecophagic habits.  相似文献

The Asian toad, Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Schneider, 1799), is widespread throughout tropical Asia and very abundant where it occurs. It was relatively recently introduced to Timor, the second largest island in the biogeographic region called Wallacea. Timor Island shows an exceptionally high level of endemism in a wide range of faunal groups and there are concerns that D. melanostictus may have a negative impact on this diversity, including vertebrates, through direct predation. To evaluate the impact the diet of D. melanostictus might have on the local fauna, gut contents of 83 preserved toad specimens from five habitat types in Timor-Leste, a country occupying the eastern half of Timor Island, were examined. We identified 5581 prey items, comprising the following animal groups: annelids; snails and slugs; spiders and harvestmen; woodlice; millipedes and centipedes; grasshoppers, crickets and earwigs; termites; thrips and true bugs; beetles; ants; hymenopterans other than ants; true flies; butterflies; unidentified insects; and insect larvae. Small eusocial insects (ants and termites) constituted the major part of the diet (61.6% and 23.4%, respectively). No vertebrate prey was recorded. Prey item composition did not differ between habitats. The wide prey spectrum well indicates that D. melanostictus is a generalist invertebrate feeder, as other studies, from regions where this species occurs naturally, have already shown. Although the Asian toad seems to not generally prey on vertebrates, vertebrate species that are morphologically similar to invertebrates in their overall appearance may be consumed. Hence, a negative effect on some taxa (e.g. blindsnakes) may be possible. We also present some limited data on intestinal parasites occurring in D. melanostictus.  相似文献

Under conditions of otherwise enforced starvation in filtered seawater and with only oysters (Saccostrea mordax) to feed on, an individual of Gyrineum natator consumed > 98%, on average, of its body weight of oyster tissues each week (> 14% per day). When other potential food, such as sediment, organic debris and other newly settled sessile organisms, was available to a similar-sized conspecific living in conditions of unfiltered seawater (in addition to oysters), the oysters only accounted for 1.52% of its average weekly diet (0.21% per day). This was because of the 12 proffered oysters, only four were consumed in contrast to the 12 eaten by the individual in filtered seawater. All the oysters were accessed through large holes made in their shells. It is generally understood that the salivary glands of confamilial ranellids produce secretions of sulphuric acid from greatly enlarged salivary glands and this is demonstrated herein for G. natator also. It is believed that it was these secretions that made the holes in the oyster shells. It, therefore, seems that G. natator uses sulphuric acid to attack prey only when more easily obtained food is not available. It may also be used in defence. A comparison of consumption rates for a range of scavenging and predatory gastropod taxa shows that representatives of the Nassariidae consume (much) more than predators because of their opportunistic lifestyles. Gyrineum natator generally eats similar amounts to other predators, although the increased difference in estimated consumption (~10%) between this species and another similar-sized ranellid, Linatella caudata, might be because the latter did not use sulphuric acid to access its prey. Its enforced use in this study of G. natator, therefore, might represent the increased costs of using the acid to access the proffered oyster prey.  相似文献

Multivariate prey trait analysis is a functional approach to understand predator–prey relationships. In the present study, six prey macroinvertebrate ecological traits were used to identify several key factors in the handling efficiency of seven predatory larval newt species. The results revealed a remarkable similarity in the feeding behaviour among species, suggesting a foraging behaviour convergence among species in the prey-handling efficiency of larval newts. Nevertheless, larvae of some newt species showed clear preferences for particular categories of ecological trait; for example, Lissotriton vulgaris tended to feed on macroinvertebrate taxa with random trajectory, and Calotriton asper fed on macroinvertebrate taxa with high agility. In contrast, Mesotriton alpestris showed a clear ability to feed on prey with movable accessories (cases/tubes) and patterned concealment. This study shows how multivariate approaches can complement traditional diet analyses, and the method has wide applicability across life-stages and species.  相似文献

We studied the feeding ecology of Eutropis multifasciata in the tropical plains of central Vietnam to understand better the foraging mode, spatiotemporal and sexual variation in dietary composition, and rarefaction curves of prey-taxon richness for males and females. Stomach contents (n = 161) were collected from October 2013 to May 2014 using a nonlethal stomach-flushing technique. A total of 680 food items (624 animal items and 56 plant items) was found in 161 stomachs of skinks, representing 19 unique animal categories. We found that the diet of E. multifasciata is composed mainly of small, sedentary and clumped prey and that this skink specialises on spiders, insect larvae, snails, grasshoppers and crickets (with a combined importance index of 60%). Dietary composition, prey size and total prey volume in E. multifasciata changed between dry and rainy seasons and among regions. The total volume of food items consumed by males was larger than that of females, and the diversity and evenness index of prey categories were larger in males than in females. However, using rarefaction curves revealed that females have the higher prey-taxon richness after points between 130 and 140 prey items for frequency, and between 160 and 170 prey items for number of items, and the differences were not statistically significant. The foraging behaviour of E. multifasciata best fits a ‘widely foraging’ model.  相似文献

Studies on the predatory behaviour of land planarians have focused mainly on established invasive species, while the feeding habits of non-invasive planarians are poorly understood. We analyse the predatory behaviour of Obama ladislavii, a land planarian native to southern Brazil that is common in both natural and human-disturbed areas. Observations were performed in the laboratory. Several groups of invertebrates were offered as possible prey and interactions between these invertebrates and planarians were recorded. Obama ladislavii fed on the introduced land gastropods Bradybaena similaris, Helix aspersa and Deroceras laeve, ignoring other invertebrates. Once potential prey were identified, we tested the ability of O. ladislavii to recognize and follow slime trails, and demonstrated the planarian’s ability to follow chemical trails from prey in the environment. The consumption of exotic species indicates a flexible, generalist diet that is consistent with the ability of O. ladislavii to adapt to environments altered by human activities. Thus, this species may become invasive if introduced outside of its original distribution, but it also has the potential to be used in biological control programs for pest management in its native range.  相似文献

Predictive modeling of geographic distribution based on ecological niche has become an important tool in ecology. It uses previous information about distribution of species and environmental variations associated with this distribution, restricting to the models the closest prediction of the ecological niche. The eumastacid grasshoppers are distributed mainly in the Neotropical region, and Temnomastacinae is the subfamily with the largest geographic distribution. Little is known about the biology of Eumastacidae, the only data available reporting the association between some grasshopper species and plants of several families. In the Cerrado only Temnomastax is recorded, which has a wide distribution in the central region of Brazil. The aim of this work was to determine the potential geographic distribution of three species of Temnomastax occurring in the Cerrado biome. We used 446 records of occurrence obtained in specialised literature, inventories, museums and photographs, from the following species: Temnomastax hamus, Temnomastax ricardoi and Temnomastax tigris. The niche modeling was generated with the bioclimatic model DOMAIN through DIVA-GIS. The potential geographic distribution of T. hamus is the largest among all Temnomastax species. Temnomastax ricardoi has its potential distribution in the central-north of Mato Grosso do Sul, in regions surrounding the type locality, while T. tigris. exhibits a restricted potential distribution along the carbonate arc of the Corumbá Formation, which outcrops in the region of Serra da Bodoquena and Corumbá, entering the eastern portion of Bolivia.  相似文献

The diets of all South-East Asian water snakes of the subfamily Homalopsinae are reviewed. New diet observations for 10 species of homalopsine snakes are presented. The data on four of these, Cantoria violacea, Enhydris doriea, E. longicauda and Gerarda prevostina represent the first published diet records for these species. The observations for Fordonia leucobalia, Myron richardsonii andEnhydris enhydris represent the first taxonomically detailed diet records for these three species. The records provided for Cerberus rynchops, Enhydris plumbea and Homalopsis buccata add new taxonomic categories to previous records. The records provided for Cerberus rynchops, E. plumbea and Homalopsis buccata add new taxonomic categories to previous records. Four generalities emerge from our findings: (1) freshwater homalopsines feed primarily on fish and the adults and larvae of amphibians; (2) at least four of the eight estuarial species specialize on crustaceans while two primarily prey on fish; (3) feeding on crustaceans appears to have evolved independently at least twice; (4) prey are usually less than 10% of the predator's mass. The known predators of homalopsines are summarized and include both invertebrates and vertebrates. The microhabitats of the estuarial species are discussed and related to prey and habitat preferences.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Despite the importance of diet in avian ecology, knowledge of bird diet in tropical regions, particularly South-East Asia, is limited. Assessing predator–prey relationships of how energy flows across ecosystems provides insight into niche segregation of sympatric species. We examined induced-regurgitation samples from 15 species of insectivorous birds – 12 babblers and three flycatcher-like species – from the Krau Wildlife Reserve, central Peninsular Malaysia. The main objective of this study was to compare and characterise the diet of similar trophically insectivorous birds so as to examine the occurrence of dietary overlap or segregation. The majority of identified prey items belong to the following arthropod taxa: Coleoptera (53%), Hymenoptera (19%), Blattodea (11%), and Araneae (11%). The diet of all bird species slightly overlapped (p = 0.070) but network analysis yielded a relatively low value (Ro = 0.53), indicating dietary divergence may have occurred among the studied bird species, possibly reflected by the variation in proportion of arthropod groups. A high proportion of Coleoptera and three other arthropod groups (i.e. Hymenoptera, Blattodea and Araneae) in the diet of studied birds could be related to their richness and abundance in aerial leaf-litter, the substrate preferred by most babblers. Dietary differences may further be explained by variations in bill shapes and sizes, likely corresponding to prey size. Unique foraging strategies (utilising different vertical strata, microhabitats, and attack manoeuvres) could also lead to dietary separation among sympatric species. Flycatcher-like species were expected to flycatch different prey items (families or lower taxa) versus the gleaning birds (most babblers). This study successfully discerned more details on the diets of insectivorous birds inhabiting Malaysian forests, providing a foundation for future studies on the ecology and biology of understorey birds.  相似文献

Summary

Observations were made on four sympatric species of sphecid wasps of the genus Philanthus that nest in late summer and prey upon Hymenoptera. All four species nest in a restricted locale, but with little overlap in nesting areas. Comparison of nest contents of females demonstrated limited overlap in prey utilization among the four species, but only when both size and taxonomic category of prey were considered. The ultimate cause of this resource partitioning is unknown. Review of 30 populations of 16 species of North American Philanthus reveals varying degrees of specialization on prey types. Although populations of one species, separated in either time or space, tend to have similar niche breadths, this is not always the case. Intra-and inter-populational comparisons of prey records suggest behavioural plasticity allowing response to variations in prey availability. Some of the divergence in prey use among species is due to differences in predator size.  相似文献

Summary

Nine soil, freshwater, and marine species of Thecamoeba have been isolated and investigated, and nine other probably or possibly valid species were reviewed from the literature. Locomotive form/behaviour and interphase nuclear structure are adequate to distinguish all known species, and on that basis the diagnoses of several species have been clarified and questions of possible synonymy resolved.

Most known species can be placed into either a rugose or a smooth group, but it is not yet clear that the genus can be formally divided along that line.

Feeding experiments and observations on six soil and freshwater species showed interspecific differences in the kind of protozoan prey ingested. Species also differed in their rate of multiplication in culture.

One recently discovered species, T. proteoides, approaches Amoeba proteus in both morphological and cultural characteristics more than does any other known species of Thecamoeba but is clearly a member of the latter genus.  相似文献

This paper is the first to describe, in detail, the process of feeding by a species of Charonia. As Charonia lampas commenced attacking its sea star prey, Ophidiaster ophidianus, the latter autotomized its trailing arm and escaped. The pursuing C. lampas ate this arm. The results of this study are not in accord with the established view of feeding by species of Charonia. Firstly, C. lampas did not inject either a venom into its prey to paralyse it nor an acid to access it and, second, nor did it pierce the skeleton of its prey and suck out the tissues, all as reported in the literature. Rather, in the case herein described, C. lampas held and manipulated its prey with the foot and used its taenioglossan radula located at the end of the extendible pleurembolic proboscis to scrape and ingest the soft tissues of the sea star and, subsequently, consume the remaining skeletal components again using the proboscis and contained radula. These two phases of consumption were followed by two matching phases of faeces production. Also described is the foregut anatomy of C. lampas, including, for the first time, the minute jaws and the histology of the salivary glands, and for which comparison is made with those of the known acid-producing structures of representatives of the Cassidae and other Ranellidae. As finally described, predator and prey clearly recognised each other signifying an identifiably intimate relationship. Charonia lampas consumed only the autotomised arm and it is argued that in such a case, as an anti-predation device, autotomy is of survival benefit to both predator and prey.  相似文献

Summary

Monthly or two-monthly samples of G. complanata were taken from the stony littoral of five unproductive lakes in N. Wales and seven productive lakes in Cheshire and Shropshire, England, over two years. Satisfactory antisera were produced against ten potential prey groups, viz. Tricladida, Oligochaeta, Mollusca, Cladocera, Asellus, Amphipoda, Chironomidae, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera. These were used in the precipitin test to identify the gut contents of the field-collected leeches.

In productive lakes Mollusca were fed on extensively followed by Oligochaeta and Chironomidae, whereas in unproductive lakes the last two prey groups were most heavily utilized. The lesser utilization of Mollusca in unproductive sites reflects lower availability. Together, these prey groups constituted 91% and 85% of the overall diet in productive and unproductive sites respectively. The other prey groups formed only small proportions of the diet with Tricladida and Cladocera being least favoured.

Dietary composition did not vary much over the course of a year. Feeding activity is low in the reproductive period and in the winter months when low temperatures prevail. There were no significant differences in resource utilization between three weight classes, viz. small, medium and large leeches.  相似文献

Brachycephalus garbeanus is an aposematic toadlet, endemic to the Atlantic Forest in the mountains of the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Information regarding the ecology of species in this genus is scarce, with no information on most species, including B. garbeanus. We provide ecological information about B. garbeanus, in particular regarding microhabitat use, sexual dimorphism in body size, and feeding habits. Our study was conducted in a montane area of the Parque Estadual dos Três Picos, the largest State park in Rio de Janeiro. Most of the B. garbeanus in the study area were found on the forest floor leaf litter. Females were larger on average than males. Brachycephalus garbeanus consumed a wide array of prey, comprising exclusively invertebrates and predominantly arthropods. There were seasonal differences in the diet composition, but mites and ants were important in both wet and dry seasons.  相似文献
