First described fossil representatives of the parasitoid wasp taxa Asaphesinae n. n. and Eunotinae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae sensu lato) from Eocene Baltic amber

ABSTRACT

New Baltic amber species of Pteromalidae sensu lato are described, from two different subfamilies, Asaphesinae n. n. and Eunotinae. Asaphesinae is provided as a replacement name for Asaphinae Ashmead 1904, which is a junior homonym of the trilobite family Asaphidae Burmeister 1843. Coriotela lasallei gen. n., sp. n.. and Butiokeras costae gen. n., sp. n.. are described as the first known fossil species of Asaphesinae and Eunotinae, respectively. These species establish the minimum known age of both groups in the Eocene. Taxonomic changes are also proposed for some extant species. The genus Desantisiana Neder de Román syn. n.. is found to be a junior synonym of Notoglyptus, and its only described species is transferred as Notoglyptus jujuyensis (Neder de Román) comb. n.. The tribe Calyconotiscini, previously classified in Eunotinae, is abolished and Calyconotiscus Narendran & Saleem is transferred to Pireninae.

Re-evaluation of the fossil Phoridae (Diptera)

I re-evaluated the known fossil phorids after re-examining much of the Baltic amber and Dominican amber fauna. Many extant genera reported from Eocene Chinese and Eocene/Oligocene Baltic amber are actually not present; instead there are representatives of relatively primitive stem-group taxa. A new genus and species of fossil phorid, Limulomyia tyche, based on a male and a limuloid female, is described from Baltic amber. Some changes in the taxonomy of amber phorids are proposed: Pseudometopina Disney is synonymized with Metopina Schmitz (new synonymy), Diplonevra meunieri Brues is transferred to the genus Godavaria Brown (new combination), Protophorites fimbriatus Brues is considered a junior subjective synonym of Protoplatyphora tertiaria Brues (new synonymy) and Phalacrotophora tertiara Statz is transferred to the genus Gymnophora (new combination). The oldest confirmed dates for extant phorid genera are given.

Summary

The Ethiopian species of the genus Agrypon Foerster (Anomaloninae) are revised and a key is given to the eight species. Four species, A. zebrinum, A. omum, A. seyrigi and A. hancocki, are described as new and three new synonymies are proposed. A. leucostomum (Cameron) is newly transferred to Agrypon. Notes on the phylogeny of the species are included.

Summary

Type specimens of Aegocrioceras quadratum (Crick), A. koeneni Spath and A. subseeleyi Spath are described and figured. A. subseeleyi is probably a junior subjective synonym of A. bicarinatum (Young &; Bird). The interpretation of the other English species of Aegocrioceras listed by Spath (1924) is discussed and a new species, A. densiradiatum, is erected.     

The taxonomic position of Alma worthingtoni Stephenson

Summary

1. 1. Alma worthingtoni is compared with A. emini from a taxonomic point of view.

2. 2. The size of the type specimen of A. worthingtoni falls well within the range for A. emini.

3. 3. The character of the body chaetæ as well as the chaetal distances is the same in both species.

4. 4. The internal anatomy in both species is the same. The absence of spermathecae in Alma worthingtoni is explained.

5. 5. The character of the copulatory appendages as well as that of the genital chaetæ in both species closely correspond.

6. 6. It is concluded that Alma worthingtoni Stephenson 1930 is the same as Alma emini Michaelsen 1892.

Nine species of genus Stegana from southern Japan, including three new species, S. (Oxyphortica) nigripennis Hendel, S. (Steganina) ctenaria Nishiharu, S. (Steganina) izu Sidorenko, S. (Steganina) kanmiyai Okada and Sidorenko, S. (Steganina) masanoritodai Okada and Sidorenko, S. (Steganina) ornatipes Wheeler and Takada, S. (Oxyphortica) dendrobium sp. nov., S. (Steganina) biprotrusa sp. nov. and S. (Steganina) bacilla sp. nov. are surveyed and described with designation of a new synonym S. (Steganina) maymyo Sidorenko. A key to all species of genus Stegana from southern Japan is provided.     

Apogon andhrae,a new species of apogonid fish from the Bay of Bengal

Summary

A new species of Apogon from Indo-West Pacific is described. A. andhrae sp. nov. can be distinguished from the closely related A. ellioti Day by the absence of the pigment band on the anal fin and of pigment spots on the dorsal side of head, and the presence of a narrow black edge to the caudal fin.     

First record of the genus Tanaostigma (Hymenoptera,Chalcidoidea, Tanaostigmatidae) from the Afrotropical region with description of three new species

The genus Tanaostigma is newly recorded from the Afrotropical region and three new species are described: Tanaostigma lasallei van Noort sp. nov. (South Africa), Tanaostigma mulu van Noort sp. nov. (Kenya) and Tanaostigma ukumbusho van Noort sp. nov. (Kenya). We provide comprehensive images of the holotypes and an illustrated identification key to the African species. A comparison of the environmental adaptations of the intertidal carabids Aepus robini (Laboulbe[ngrave]e) and Aepus marinus Ström

Summary

The adaptations of Aepus robini and Aepus marinus to the littoral environment are compared. A. robini lives in crevices containing two distinct zones of deposit, and A. marinus under stones. Morphological differences include arrangement of setae, shape of elytra, length of antennae. A. marinus recovers more quickly following submergence and its elytra are better suited to carry an air store. The structure of the legs of A. robini is better suited to attachment to smooth moist surfaces than that of A. marinus.     

The rats of Addu Atoll,Maldive Islands

Summary

1. 1. A population of tree-living Rattus rattus from Addu Atoll is described. Both sexes, but especially the females, have an unusually high tail to head-plus-trunk ratio.

2. 2. It is likely that the population reached Addu from Ceylon well before 1900 and is derived from the form R. r. kandianus Kelaart of that country. R. r. kandianus differs somewhat from the Addu form in its pleage characters but resembles it in possessing a high tail to head-plus-trunk ratio.

     

A new genus of dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

ABSTRACT

A new genus of the tribe Deltochilini, Atlantemolanum new genus, endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, is proposed here to include two species formerly described in the genus Deltochilum based on the unique morphologic characters shared by Deltochilum riehli = Atlantemolanum riehli (Harold 1868) new combination and Deltochilum costalimai = Atlantemolanum costalimai (Pereira and D’Andretta 1955) new combination.

A new species of Lysianassa Milne-Edwards (Amphipoda: Lysianassidae) from the Channel Isles

Summary

A new species of Lysianassa is described from Guernsey, collected by Norman in 1906 and previously identified as L. plumosa Boeck. The new species is readily separated from the two allied species, plumosa and cinghalensis, by the deeply excavate palm of gnathopod 2 and the large tooth on epimeral plate 3, respectively.     

The taxonomy and biology of the British Adelognathinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae)

Summary

The known biology of Adelognathus, including new findings, is summarized. An illustrated key is given to the 15 species found in the British Isles. One species, A. stelfoxi, is described as new.     

The synonomy in Citrinophila Kirby and further notes on Epitola Westwood and Alaena Boisduval (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)

Summary

The synonomy in Citrinophila Kirby is cleared up and a new species and two neallotypes are described. A new species and two neallotypes are described in Epitola Westwood, and the types of Alaena caissa Rebel & Rogenhofer are figured for the first time.     

Hishimonus Ishihara, 1953 and Hishimonoides Ishihara, 1965 as synonyms of Cestius Distant, 1908 (Cicadellidae: Hemiptera)

Summary

A re-examination of Haplomunna Richardson (1908) reveals a close relationship between this genus and Munella Bonnier (1896), Abyssaranea Wilson &; Hessler (1974) and Thylakogaster ibid. As a consequence, a new family, Haplommunidae, is erected to contain these four genera. The systematic problems with this new grouping, its relation to the Dendrotionidae, and some peculiarities of its members are discussed. A key and the geographical ranges of the four genera are included. A generic diagnosis for Haplomunna is given, and H. caeca (Richardson, 1905) and H. hubbsi, sp. nov. are described.
