The generic affiliations of all the Japanese species of the psyllid subfamily Psyllinae are re-examined under the current generic recognition of the subfamily based mainly on adult morphological characters. Twenty-two species of the genus Psylla Geoffroy are newly combined with the genus Cacopsylla Ossiannilsson. Psylla wulinensis Yang and Aphalara akebiae Shinji are newly synonymized with Psylla multipunctata Miyatake and Cacopsylla hakonensis (Kuwayama), respectively. In addition, Cacopsylla toddaliae (Yang) is newly recorded from Japan. In all, 62 species of the Japanese Psyllinae are recognized and classified into three genera Psylla, Cacopsylla and Chamaepsylla Ossiannilsson, which include 11, 50 and one species, respectively. A key to Japanese psylline genera and a revised checklist of all the Japanese species of Psyllinae are presented with their distribution and host plant information and also with their synonymies.  相似文献

Summary

Information obtained about the association of various flies with different types of filth in Dacca city, their life histories, food preference of the larvae, and the seasonal changes of their population has been recorded.

The filth of Dacca city has been classified into the following eight categories for the present work. (1) Human excrement, (2) cow dung, (3) manure heaps, (4) garbage and kitchen refuse, (5) decaying fruits and vegetables, (6) carrion, (7) rotten fish and meat, and (8) municipal sewage and other liquid waste.

In total nine fixed areas in different parts of the city were visited regularly to collect adult flies, or their eggs or larvae.

The association of various flies with the above eight types of filth has been discussed.

The duration of the life cycle from oviposition to emergence of the adults was recorded for five species of Psychoda, seven species of Musca, one species of Calliphora, two species of Chrysomyia, two species of Lucilia, and three species of Sarcophaga, during summer and winter.

Food preferences of the larvae of two common species of Musca, two species of Sarcophaga, one species of Lucilia, one species of Calliphora, and two species of Chrysomyia have been recorded.

The trend of the seasonal variation of the various fly populations have been discussed.  相似文献

The biogeographical distribution of invertebrates with different life history traits has frequently been linked with surrounding ecological factors selecting for these characteristics. This study documents the distribution of congeneric nudibranchs with lecithotrophic and planktotrophic larvae in the Gulf of Maine. Representative coastal study sites in the north‐east and south‐west regions of the Gulf of Maine were monitored for seasonal abundance of two Dendronotus species and their thecate hydroid prey, and mean water temperatures. The different dispersal potentials of the larvae from the two incipient species of nudibranch may correlate with differences in seasonal resource availability of the north‐east and south‐west coastal regions of the Gulf of Maine, while seasonal water temperature variability may be an indirect indicator of the trophic stability of the region. Seasonal resource stability (i.e. hydroid abundance) is the most likely selective agent for the distribution of these two species and their different life history strategies.  相似文献

Three species of Characodoma Maplestone, 1990 from the Mediterranean are discussed here. Two, C. rostratum and C. reclinatum are described as new from Pleistocene bathyal sediments of Southern Italy. The third, C. mamillatum (Seguenza, 1880) was already known from Tertiary-to-Quaternary sediments of Southern Italy. It has been recognized as the senior synonym of C. bifurcatum (Waters, 1918). Stratigraphical, geographical and ecological distributions of all the species are discussed. Morphological studies, principally of C. mamillatum, provide useful information about the life habit of these species.  相似文献

A Japanese foliage spider, Cheiracanthium japonicum, builds nests with plant leaves. The nests are classified into seven types in relation to the seasons and purposes of nesting. We investigated whether the spider selects a plant species according to the nest type and how the physical traits of leaves influence the spider's plant selection. The difference between the composition of the host plant species used for nesting and that of the seasonal vegetation cover was confirmed. This suggests that the spider chooses the host plant species regardless of its abundance in their habitat. Early juveniles use small living or large dead leaves of various plant species to build moulting nests. Females prefer long and large leaves found in Miscanthus sinensis and Phragmites japonica over other plant leaves to build breeding nests.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to examine the parasite fauna of spiny dogfish, and to determine seasonal variations in infection rates and faunal composition. A total of 10 metazoan parasite species was recorded, of which four species occurred in the intestine, three species were parasitic on the gills, two species occurred on the skin, and one species parasitized the spiracle. However, a cumulative parasite species richness curve indicated that a larger sample may have yielded additional parasite species. The parasite assemblage consisted of five species of copepods (Eudactylina acanthii Scott, Caligus curtis Müller, Pandarus bicolor Leach, Echthrogaleus coleoptratus (Guerin-Meneville) and Pseudocharopinus bicaudatus (Krøyer)), two species of nematodes (Anisakis simplex Rudolphi and Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi)), two species of cestodes (Trilocularia gracilis Olssen and Gilguina squali (Fabricius)), and one species of monogenean (Erpocotyle abbreviata (Olssen)). The parasite fauna was found to be similar to that of S. acanthias from the North Sea, and from New Zealand waters. Results obtained during the present study indicate that the infection rates of certain parasite species display seasonal cycles, most species displaying their greatest prevalence in spring and their lowest prevalence in autumn.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the seasonal population fluctuation of orthopteran assemblages and determine the spatial distribution of the most abundant species of Orthoptera among two habitats in Greece. A 2-year study was performed in a lowland area and in a mountain grassland area. The family of Acrididae represented almost 75% of the total orthopteran relative abundance in both sampling areas. Dociostaurus maroccanus and Chorthippus bornhalmi were found to be the most abundant species in the lowland and the mountain sampling stations, respectively. Most populated species were spatially aggregated in the lowland station, whereas the abundant species were found to be distributed either aggregately or randomly among sampling units in the mountain area. Shannon–Wiener index estimate was higher for the lowland in 2007 than for the mountain, whereas the opposite was found in 2008. The factors affecting the population dynamics of Orthoptera are discussed.  相似文献

The American bullfrog Lithobates catesbeianus has been introduced around the world, with invasive populations reported from almost all South American countries. A population of this species was introduced in the Calingasta department of San Juan province, which is an arid environment in western Argentina. This work provides information on the dietary composition of an invasive population of L. catesbeianus, and compares the degree of dietary overlap between adults and juveniles. Stomach contents of 169 bullfrogs (82 adults and 87 juveniles) were analysed. Adults consumed 40 prey taxa and Hymenoptera (Insecta) was the most numerous prey item (41.8%), followed by Araneae (13.6%) and Aeglidae (13.4%). Juveniles consumed 29 prey taxa and Hymenoptera constituted the highest percentage in prey number (77.2%). The trophic overlap niche index at the same level shows a value of 0.64 overlap in dietary community between adults and juveniles of this bullfrog. Aeglidae was volumetrically the most important trophic item (25.4%), followed by Anura (25.02%). Our results showed that cannibalism in bullfrogs is more common than the consumption of native anurans, coinciding with that reported in other populations of introduced bullfrogs. The high similarity in the diets of both size classes and the association between the size of the predator and prey suggest that the impact caused by bullfrogs throughout their ontogeny is high and probably has an impact on their prey. Freshwater crabs are the main items in the diet of Lithobates catesbeianus in other introduced populations and are usually the most conspicuous at our study site. The crabs in freshwater ecosystems are part of the lowest trophic level in the food chain. The major threats to the southern region’s freshwater crabs include deforestation, farming and exotic species. Lithobates catesbeianus has a generalist diet and high overlap between adults and juveniles.  相似文献

The ability of females of the matriphagous spider Cheiracanthium japonicum to discern their own offspring was examined based on a comparison of her maternal care for her own eggs and spiderlings with other conspecific females as well as those of other congeneric species. Cheiracanthium japonicum females did not discern their own nest from those of conspecific and congeneric individuals. In addition, the female did not distinguish her own egg sac from those of other conspecific or congeneric individuals. On the other hand, the female clearly discriminated between her own spiderlings and those of other congeneric species only if the congeneric spiderlings were introduced into the breeding nest. Consequently, the female will allow conspecific spiderlings to predate her (i.e. cannibalism). However, it is hardly expected that spiderlings of a certain female would eat another female in the field, as the reproductive period is quite short and synchronised in a population. Considering that the female can only recognise spiderlings of other species, the recognition ability of C. japonicum females will be evolved only to work as a protection against intruders of other species into the breeding nest.  相似文献

The male, female, pupa and larva of a new species of Gelechiidae (Lepidoptera), Locharcha opportuna Moreira and Becker, are described and illustrated with the aid of optical and scanning electron microscopy. A preliminary analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences including members of related lineages is also provided. The immature stages are associated with galls induced by a species of Palaeomystella Fletcher (Lepidoptera: Momphidae) on Tibouchina sellowiana (Cham.) Cogn. (Melastomataceae), endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest. Larvae are kleptoparasitic, usurping the gall internal space and thereafter feeding on the internal tissues. By determining the variation in population density of both species and following gall development individually throughout ontogeny under field conditions, we demonstrated that the kleptoparasite completes its life cycle inside galls induced by Palaeomystella, where pupation occurs. The variation in seasonal abundance of the kleptoparasite is tied to that of the cecidogenous species, with their corresponding peaks in density occurring sequentially.

Seasonal data for one year on the flora and fauna associated with Cladophora albida (Huds.) Kütz from four rockpools (3 high-shore, 1 mid-shore) on Great Cumbrae Island, Firth of Clyde, Scotland are presented. A total of 131 858 animals was censussed. The mid-shore pool had a significantly lower annual mean density than the high-shore pools. Only at the most exposed site was a distinct seasonal trend apparent (lowest faunal density in spring, highest in summer). Species number showed no marked seasonal fluctuations neither did equitability. The lowest diversity was found in the mid-shore pool. Epiphytic cyanobacteria were present throughout the year. Diatoms were absent in the summer; possibly because of intense grazing by meiofaunal herbivores. The reduction in overall faunal density in the mid-shore pool was caused by the absence of large numbers of nematodes at this site related to the reduced availability of detritus and sand grains, perhaps reflecting greater wave scouring at this level on the shore. Large meiofaunal populations overwinter successfully in Cladophora in these ice-free latitudes and sheltered waters. Nematodes and harpacticoid copepods dominate the fauna of Cladophora in these permanent pools. Even populations in high-shore situations are remarkably stable. The rhombognathid mites, the polychaetes Fabricia sabella and Janua pagenstecheri and the chironomid larvae all showed little or no seasonal fluctuations in numbers, though most harpacticoid copepods, ostracods, turbellarians and archiannelids had very definite population maxima. Cladophora also acts as a nursery ground for species whose adults live elsewhere on rocky shores.  相似文献

This study addresses how Diptera assemblages differ in four sympatric phytotelmata. The Eryngium species retain water in their axils forming a phytotelm and this situation leads to the speculation that dipteran assemblages may differ, mainly when the plants begin to grow and retain more water in their axils, and when becoming senescent. Diptera from Eryngium horridum, Eryngium stenophyllum, Eryngium aff. serra and Eryngium elegans were sampled. This study revealed that the Eryngium spp. are used by Diptera differentially and their populations show seasonal changes, with peaks in the autumn. Diptera were represented by immature stages belonging to six aquatic and seven semi-aquatic families. The most important were Chironomidae, Culicidae, Periscelididae and Ceratopogonidae. Two species of Chironomids were the most abundant. Culicidae, Periscelididae and Ceratopogonidae were more selective than Chironomidae. Saprophages were the most abundant where the fine detritus feeders were the dominant group. Periscelididae was the main free-swimming predator.  相似文献

Nest construction behaviour and nest site selection are described for seven species of Afrotropical Ammophila.

Four species were atypical in their nest siting. Ammophila beniniensis selected shaded sites in well vegetated habitats, A. vulcania selected small clumps of vegetation in otherwise open habitats. A. insignis nested in vertical banks, old animal burrows and caves. A. braunsi is unique amongst Ammophila in its use of abandoned burrows of other wasps in non-friable clay soils. A. ferrugineipes, A. dolichodera and A. dolichocephala nested mostly in open habitats.

Methods of soil waste disposal, sealing of nests and their final coverage, differed interspecifically, in some cases intraspecifically, but often apparently in response to the habitat.

Temperature conditions, affected by habitat, influenced the depth to which nests were dug by some species. A. insignis switched sites in response to seasonal changes in temperature regimes in vertical banks.

The existence in particular species of both primitive and advanced aspects of nesting behaviour questions their use in assessing the evolutionary status of these species.  相似文献

Genetic studies have shown that the threatened crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes species complex is composed of two lineages (A. italicus and A. pallipes), both occurring in Italy. However, the issue surrounding their taxonomic status has not yet been solved even though the confused taxonomy may hamper attempts to conserve indigenous crayfish. The aim of this study was to develop methods for the morphometrical characterization of the A. pallipes species complex. Having analysed 18 morphometric variables on a total of 44 specimens of each lineage, we showed that the tip of the rostrum could be used to discriminate A. italicus and A. pallipes. Such discrimination was also obtained by analysing the size and shape of both the female spermatophoric plate and the male gonopods. These results confirm the potential to adopt morphometric studies to complement the genetic characterization of cryptic species.  相似文献

Summary

Plagues of small mammals in Australia are nearly confined to rodents, both native and introduced. Only in the arid regions do small marsupials reach plague numbers.

Records of plagues have been found as early as 1845, but in many of them there is insufficient information to identify the species involved.

Plagues can develop under three main conditions, namely (a) when species are introduced into new environments, (b) in the artificial environment of crop plants, and (c) in the natural environment.

There are records of the introduced Rattus rattus forming plagues. On colonizing Lord Howe Island in 1918 the species built up to plague numbers in two years. On other islands the species is likely to have built up large populations also. Of various reported plagues on the Australian mainland, Rattus rattus has been identified definitely on only one occasion, in western New South Wales in 1887. There are earlier reports of the introduced rats and mice occurring in large numbers in unsettled areas, but it seems more likely that the animals were native species, wrongly identified, than introduced species which had spread into the areas concerned.

Two groups of species build up to plague numbers in the artificial environment of crop plants. These are Rattus conatus and some other native species which infest sugar-cane in Queensland, and Mus musculus which often infests wheatfields but also forms plagues in other habitats. Both groups infect the crop from a neighbouring natural habitat. Detailed ecological studies have been carried out on both these types of infestation. Reports of dispersal of plagues of Mus musculus need investigation.

Mus musculus can form plagues over a wide range of habitats, from the arid regions of central Australia to the high rainfall areas of tropical Queensland. The status of the form inhabiting the arid regions needs study.

The arid regions of Australia provide a special environment in which live a number of species of small mammals, both eutherians (rodents) and marsupials. In this habitat breeding occurs when there is a sufficient rainfall, and is not regulated at its extremes by an annual climatic cycle. Some of the riverine lands within the region receive drainage from outside, and this modifies the relationship with rainfall in the Lake Eyre Basin particularly. Under favourable conditions several species of the small mammals can build up to plague numbers. In this they appear to differ markedly from the small mammals of other deserts of the world. The special features of the Australian arid environment which allow this are unknown.

Plagues of Rattus villosissimus are generated in the tablelands to the south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, and hordes of the rodents disperse in large numbers, mostly moving out of the home territory along the course of rivers draining it to the south, and sometimes also to the north. The little information available concerning the populations suggests similarities with the cyclic changes which take place in populations of voles and lemmings in the northern hemisphere. There is no good information about the period of recurrence of the plagues, present records showing a range from three to seventeen years.

The little information available about the plagues of small mammals in Australia suggests parallels with such plagues elsewhere. The common factors are a small size, an herbivorous (? or insectivorous) diet, a high reproductive potential and a polymorphism which permits quick adaptation to the different population structures found under different population densities.  相似文献

Phyllomedusa azurea and P. sauvagii are treefrogs from seasonal dry environments of Central Brazil. We report on reproductive and other natural history features of these species. The study was carried out in Serra da Bodoquena, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The reproductive period was determined by the presence of vocalizing males, amplectant pair or presence of tadpoles. The reproductive effort was measured as the ratio of gonad mass in relation to body mass (BM). The reproduction of both species was correlated with the rainy season. Female P. sauvagii produced more eggs and their eggs were larger than those of P. azurea. Both species showed sexual dimorphism in relation to the snout–vent length (SVL) and BM. The mating behaviour of both species was similar. Males in both species showed similar reproductive efforts, but females of P. azurea invested more in gonads compared to the males of P. sauvagii. Phyllomedusa azurea showed a significant relation between SVL versus number of the mature eggs (NME), and P. sauvagii between SVL versus NME and BM versus ovarian mass.  相似文献

Ten populations representing four species of the ‘Carabodes marginatus’ group, as C. marginatus, C. affinis, C. quadrangulus and C. montanus from central Italy have been studied for genetic variation at 16 enzymatic loci by electrophoresis. Morphotypes close to C. marginatus but easily distinguishable by the shorter marginal notogastral setae were also included in the analysis to evaluate their systematic status. Carabodes arduinii, a very different species from the ‘coriaceus’ group, was employed as an out-group. Phylogenetic relationships among different species were studied and inferred data demonstrated that cladogenetic events occurred, even though rates of molecular and morphological evolution do not correlate. Morphotypes related to C. marginatus were genetically very close to the type specimens, but a different pattern of allele frequency was observed in sympatric populations of the two setal forms. Possible explanations for this finding are suggested in relation to historical processes. The rate of gene flow among populations of the two morphs was estimated by both Wright's F st and Slatkin's Nm methods. These two different procedures yielded contradictory results.  相似文献

Abstract

Parapsyllaephagus Adulticolus Robinson (CHALCIDIDAE: Encyrtinae) is an endoparasite of the adults of Psylla melanoneura Förster and Psylla subferrigenea Edwards. The life histories and biology of the hosts and parasite are described. Parapsyllaephagus adulticolus has five larval instars, which feed selectively upon the developing internal genitalia of the host at first, and eventually, as the final instar, upon the whole of the abdominal viscera. Pupation within the psyllid is followed by emergence of the adult parasite through the posterior dorsal surface of the abdomen of the host. The effect of these activities upon the migration of the adult psyllid from a winter shelter plant to a summer host plant is discussed and a relationship between the stimulus to migrate and the state of development of the internal genitalia is postulated. Some aspects of the orientation of the parasite larva within the host and the phenomenon of larval reversal are discussed.  相似文献

The New Zealand braconid fauna is remarkable in that the only chelonine genus represented is Ascogaster; no member of the world-wide genus Chelonus has yet been found. The New Zealand species of Ascogaster are revised, keyed and illustrated. Of the 12 species, nine are new, two (crenulata Cameron, elongata Lyle) are redescribed and quadridentata, which was introduced into New Zealand for biological control of codling moth, was redescribed in a recent paper. One new synonym is established. The classification and biology of chelonines are briefly reviewed and the faunal relationships between Australian and New Zealand species of Ascogaster are discussed.  相似文献

Habitat modification, pollution, overfishing, poaching, competition from non‐indigenous species, and diseases have led to the extinction in Europe of many populations of indigenous crayfish. Under the rationale that any programme of reintroduction should be preceded by a thorough understanding of habitat requirements of the species of concern, we studied the microhabitat use of an Austropotamobius pallipes population in Tuscany, central Italy. Microhabitat use was assessed for water depth, current velocity, substrate, percentages of boulders, underwater tree roots, and in‐stream vegetation cover. Results show that A. pallipes' habitat use is size‐partitioned. Smaller individuals mostly occupy stream edges in shallow waters with submerged roots, whereas larger individuals use deeper waters, often associated with boulders. Crayfish spatial distribution is restricted mostly to the microhabitats characterised by extensive cover and slow current velocity. The study highlights the importance of habitat heterogeneity and cover elements for the protection of this indigenous species.  相似文献
